USC Keck Alternate Waitlist Represent

I emailed Dr. Quinn earlier today with a question and got an out-of-the-office (from May 21 to June 7) auto-reply...anyone else know anything about this? I assume that means more waiting until at least then.

😱 okaaaaay, well that changes the scheme of things. It seems as if the process won't begin till after June 7th then, huh?
 
yes indeed, it will be interesting if people get off the alternate list before june 7th.

also does dr. quinn make all these decisions?
 
tin and emilie - you guys are missing a key point (as penny pointed out) - thats not quite how the admissions process works... each school over enrolls the class, often by a factor of two or more (ie. the send out 300 acceptance for 150 spots) they do this because they know that in every given year a certain number of people will drop...

then, as may15th comes up, people dump all their acceptances, and when the amount of accepted people still holding drops below the amount they want to enroll, then movement begins


i used to think it worked the way you did, until someone explained it to me too 🙂
 
Thanks mikeinsd........I don't quite know how this process works......but since I was kinda going off of USC's movement for its waitlist pattern last year, I figured it would work similarly this year as well.
Anyways, I guess we still really don't know what's going to go on from here on out. But I do hope I get in.🙂

Hey everyone...I want to be honest with everyone this year, perhaps to save you guys from some unnecessary anguish. I applied to Keck last year and was waitlisted. I happen to have a friend who attends Keck in the class of 2009. As it turns out, the class was overenrolled last year, and NOBODY got off the waitlist. I know like 10 people posted on SDN saying they got a call from Erin, but this is a total lie. I know you guys might respond by saying well..."if people lie, why should we believe you?" That is fine...you can choose not to believe me...but I held out for that wait list all the way into July. I delayed my moving plans until the last minute because I really didn't want to go to the other school I was accepted to. I don't want you guys to go through the same thing. In the past, there has been some movement, however, don't be fooled in thinking that 50 people got off the list last year. It is not accurate.

While I certainly appreciate your "reality check" words of wisdom, I think it's important to remember that:

1. Some of us do not, at least currently, have other options. So dropping off the waitlist and/or losing hope before June even arrives is not really the smartest option at this point.

2. While several first years at Keck have indicated that a good number of people were offered places off the waitlist last year, that's not really all that relevant. Doesn't matter if 5 or 50 got off in 2006, because every year is different. It also doesn't really matter all that much if 50 get off this year; if you're not one of them, it doesn't really help you. On the other hand, if only 2 get off and you get the call, that's all you need.

Anyway, good luck to everyone still waiting.

Could you please tell me exactly where in my post did I tell people to give up or drop of the waitlist? I was just trying to tell people that while anything can happen, the USC waitlist is unreliable, and despite being promised last year by the prior class that "many" students got in off the wait list, there was no movement. First years tell interviewing students every year that "plenty" of people get in off the waitlist...but this was not the case last year. It all depends on what happens. Maybe this year they will take 50...who knows. This process is cruel, and I was just trying to warn people that other students and even admissions comities often lie to serve their own interests. I have no agenda here...

I don't know about NOBODY getting in off the waitlist last year...my student interviewer (a first year student) claimed that he got in off the waitlist. Not calling you a liar, but where are you getting your facts from? Did you call USC and ask them if anybody got in off the waitist? Or are you basing this off something you heard from someone?

Not trying to bash you or make you look bad, I agree with what you're saying about waitlists being totally unreliable.
 
My best friend since elementary school attends USC. Here is what he told me...Two years ago, a handful of students got in off the waitlist, however, last year the class was overenrolled, and the dean made a big deal the first day of class bragging about how "they did not even have to turn to there waitlist." He also volunteered as a student guide and he told me that the student volunteers each year are instructed to tell all interviewies that "several" students got off the waitlist "last year." Keep in mind, waitlists are an insurance policy for schools...a way to make sure that their class is full just in case too many people drop their spots. If they told prospective students the truth, people might be less inclined to remain on the waitlist, or put off their future plans until late in the summer. Don't forget, med schools want you to "be available" for them. They have plenty of applicants...no one person is indispensable and they are not going to grovel to the applicants. Last year, MD applicants to all med schools s up 20%, so waitlist movement at top schools was pretty much nil.
 
I didn't mean to criticize you, I'm sorry if my post came off that way. You are right; waitlists are extremely unreliable, and while I would love to get off this waitlist, I am pretty much assuming that I will not (especially considering that nothing has even happened at all this year). The source of where I got my information, however, was from students who attended undergrad with me who do not work in admissions/as tour guides.
 
The Keck waitlist is somewhat unpredictable (I'm not sure what's going to happen this year). It is true, however, that the Class of 2009 was overenrolled...I'm not quite sure about the circumstances, but they tried to admit a larger class and found out afterwards that the facilities didn't quite support that many people. The result, in any case, was that the 2009 class is bigger than ours (2010) by about 15 people. I know for a fact that people did come off the waitlist for the Class of 2010 (my class). I don't know how many, and I don't know what's going to happen this year. But...I just wanted to lend some support to the notion that the waitlist is unpredictable. No sweat...I totally understand how stressful this process is. I was on 7 waitlists last year, including Kecks. I wanted to go to USC so bad. I wanted to stay near my friends and family. However, I ended up moving 3000 miles away instead. Everything turned out for the best, as things usually do. The only reason I posted here was that my experience was so much more stressful than it needed to be due to the fact that I was holding out for that waitlist well into July (because I to had been told that "a whole bunch of students got off"). The school I am at now started on July 31st, and I basically gave myself two weeks to find an apartment, pack up all my stuff, and move across the country. I don't think you should give up hope, especially if you have good stats. It all depends on the year. Maybe they learned from their mistakes last year and chose to underenroll more this time around. Who knows. I just hate the fact that students and admissions officers are so dishonest during this process. It is such a dehumanizing process to begin with (everyone is just a bunch of numbers in a file), but the lying really got to me last year. I wish you all the best of luck
 
well this thread is a bummer. I wish I knew how many they initially accepted this year as opposed to last year. ;0
 
Regardless of what anyone says about last year or two years before, we still don't really have an idea of what is going to happen this year. There is no point speculating to death what is going to happen.

So let's wait till June 7th (or the few days thereafter) if any movement has been detected, and hope for the best.

i find it remarkable that people would indicated on SDN that they were accepted off the waitlist last year and it not be true. I suppose I have just learned something about this website.

I think you can just contact admissions to tell them you want to withdraw.🙂
 
I called admissions and there has officially been NO movement on the waitlist so far, which means:

Positive: We all have an equal shot of getting off the list

Negative: We all have an equal shot of NEVER hearing from USC

...this sucks

Well......in the previous posts, people said that they received an 'Out of Office' reply from Dr. Quinn's email....Supposedly she's out till June 7th.

I also called them a few days ago, and they said something about no movement till first week of June. So let's wait and see 😳

ya, though I had to look up the internet lingo of IIRC (which took me a little bit of time) trich is correct in saying that my girlfriend is on the wait list and we are waiting to hear from USC before we decide any further. How are you guys doing? seems like DQ is quite the elusive one these days...
 
yes, but hopefully we will start to hear soon. waiting isn't so fun especially when you have people depending on you to make choices! but I guess that is all part of the game. I really hope I get in, either way I can't wait to hear. 😉

Wow, talk about blindsiding someone. Oh man, this one cut me deep...

lol me too! I was holding out for one of those June interviews when Irvine realized nobody wants to go to their ****ty school and they need to refill the class beyond those on the waitlist. :meanie:

lol I got rejected from Irvine too. I open up my email and see "rejection" and I'm like...**** what is going on how did Miami or USC reject me ...and then I realize it's Irvine! ummmm it's June....and we didn't have an interview in the last interview date....ummm...of course we are rejected

In terms of financial aid, just to shed a little light, I interviewed in January and was accepted late January and I got no award. Just loans I'm afraid...

It seems as if the process is a bit diff this yr. According to last year's thread, they began calling off the list around May 15th. And it seemed as if the trend was, that once a week....... a whole bunch of people would be called by dean quinn. This lasted until early to mid july.


This yr however, is a little weird, due to how late they are starting
 
that is, if they ever do start. i hope it's just because they're waiting on people to decide.

all this waitlist conspiracy theorizing is ridiculous.

the two second years that gave us the tour on interview day both said they got in off the waitlist, so class of 2009 had waitlist movement.

Class of 2010 had waitlist movement, I believe SDN member Sophie was one of them.

There's no reason to think 2011 won't, it's just a matter of time people!

Look.......I personally am friends with two people who got off the waitlist last year. So I know for a fact there was movement. The conspiracy theorists may go about their own way to do whatever they damn well please
