What books have you found most useful in your first half of training.

I have read Stahl's essential psychopharm, and found it to be descent intro.

I also have essential sof clinical psychiatry (by Hales/Yudofsky) haven't looked at it yet.

  1. Stahl's Prescriber's Guide
  2. The book by Maringel (I forget the name, but it's a handy reference)
  3. A Pocket DSM
  4. Kaplan and Saddock's Synopsis of Psychiatry
  5. The MGH Handbook of Hospital Psychiatry
  6. Principles and Practice of Psychopharmacotherapy (I hated Stahl's book)
  7. Neurology for Psychiatrists (Kauffman)
  8. Up to Date (I learned more reading up to date when I encountered stuff I wasn't familiar with than any textbook)

Since you will not be doing much psychiatry your first year, focus on honing your general medical knowledge and skills so you don't end up being a ****** like most shrinks and consult for every little medical issue you encounter.

Just bought this book. It comes highly recommended. I'm slowly making my way through it.
