quick question, for those accepted, or allready in;
i am going to be applying next year to primarily DO schools, and a few MD schools. I have a 29p MCAT, and just bellow a 3.5. i was a philosophy major and only took the prereq science courses. alot of schools, however, have biochem listed as a strong recomendation. do you guys feel that it would be worthwhile or even necessary to take biochem, not only to get in but also to survive as a 1st year, god willing i get in eventually.

also, to nonscience majors; where there any other science classes, ie. anatomy, cell mol., that you found crucial to have had before 1st year. t

thanks alot to all and to all a goodnight

if you're going to apply to UNE you need to have it...

Im a Humanities major and am currently taking biochem. I am a current med school applicant but have a very good friend in med school who highly recommended taking it b/c there is a lot of info thrown at you all at once in med school and it really helps to have at least had it once before. You can still do well in biochem at med school if you don't take it, however, you will probably have to work harder at it than those who have already taken it in undergrad.

Just take biochem the very last semester you're gonna be there...so it wont affect your gpa when you're applying =D

The most helpful class I took in college was human physiology.

I never took biochem, and did fine.

ditto... some schools actually require it.

I was told if you apply to UNE and you have not taken biochem, when you receive the secondary they tell you to enroll in their distance online class for biochem. How convenient!

that is very true, and the distance class has some of the same objectives as you'll have in your first year biochem class... but from what i've heard, in the next couple years they're not going to do conditional acceptances anymore... you need to have taken biochem before you apply.

Hopefully they wait until after 2007!

If you're near UCLA, you can take Biochem at UCLA extension in the evenings. I think it only meets once a week.

Many of my classmates have had biochem and some of them find our current biochem class easier because of it.

I did not have biochem, but I wouldn't go back and change it. Prerequisites are enough in my opinion. Anything else the medical school will teach me. And sure enough, they are. (I'm taking a biochem study break now.)

Some DO schools require it.
Few MD schools require it.
All schools place a high importance on doing well in it BEFORE matriculation!
It is an ego type thing in that they measure their own students by their own Biochem.

I am a first year student at DO school, and we just got done with our 3 months long biochem class. I have never taken biochem before, and did fine. There is an emphasis on clinical biochemistry and not so much on electron pushing and all that other stuff that you would probably learn in undegrad class. If you can find a medical biochemistry class, maybe take that, otherwise I would not recommend going through the regular biochemistry in undegrad.

I took biochem as an undergrad. I think the advantage I had over my non-undergrad-biochem-taking classmates ended after week 2.5.

UNE's distance course is medical biochemistry, I was told.

I'm applying right now and I took biochem just to be safe because some schools require or prefer it. It was hard, but it was my favorite class I've taken in my 5.5 years of undergrad. Veeeery interesting stuff.

I would have to agree with the above, it might help you get in, but it will do little to help you in school.
Med school biochem is much more clinically driven.

I hope so, because I am hating biochemistry right now....damn, how many freakn' pathways can one learn in a week?!!! :barf:

I've yet to learn a pathway, as my prof is a lab rat, and you would think we were taking analytical again?!
Oh well, less memorization and more intuitive understanding I guess.

If I didnt have to take it I wouldnt have. The same goes for anatomy. Many people have had no anatomy before med school and they have no problem. I dont even remember anything I learned in biochem so Ill have to learn it all over again anyway. I would take a class that you will get more out of in your last semester of college.. something that interests you.

Just my opinion though

Take physiology, biochemistry and histology.... if you have time, microbiology, neurology, immunology... anything you can get your hands on. Learn as much as you can now, and it will make it easier for you later.
