Hey I know that there are a few NOVA vs. USF threads on this forum but they never really answered the question I was looking for.

About my situation for NOVA:
-Parents live in Ft. Lauderdale so I will be living off campus with my parents.
-Only have to pay the tuition.
-Parental support (don't have to prepared food, worry about expenses, etc)

But I was considering USF.

So here are my questions for NOVA:
-NOVA has a DO Medical program, but I want to go to a MD Medical program. Will attending NOVA penalize me in any way if I show clinical shadowing or research at a DO school?
-How are the professors at NOVA? I am one of those students who needs a good professor to outline exactly what I need to know instead of expecting me to stress for hours over what's important and what isn't.
-How is the campus feel at NOVA?

Questions about USF:
-How is their premed program? Will I be considered competitive if I attend USF?
-Do they have a Medical Center on campus? Having that constant stream of doctors, nurses, and professionalism around me motivates me to keep my priorities in check, this is very important to me.

Thank you very much for your guys time. I am sorry if any of these questions seem ignorant or demeaning. I have no such intention. I am just new to Florida and only recently became a resident. I am originally from Kentucky.

If you stay at NOVA you will save money in the long run.

If you want to be on your own and freedom I recommend USF.I do not know much about Nova. But USF does have a MD school not sure if it is on campus pretty sure it is, prob a pre med advisor, on campus clubs, maybe more research spots than NOVA. You could always drive down back home.

In my opinion id pick USF but you can get into any top MD school if you work hard.

I don't think attending a school with a DO program will penalize you... can't say the same about the fact that NOVA has a DDS program.. they surely will ask you question about that .

1) You will thank yourself for saving as much money as you can in the long run, especially since there's not a whole lot of geographic difference between NSU and FSU.

2) Being a DO isn't really a hindrance nowadays unless you're planning on going into a ROADS specialty (and even then, there's AOA residencies). DO NOT TAKE THIS AS MEANING BEING A 'ROADS' DO IS SOMEHOW LESS COMPETITIVE. YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO WORK YOUR ASS OFF REGARDLESS OF WHICH DEGREE YOU HAVE. You will not be penalized at all for having a DO as opposed to an MD.

3) True, you have to take the COMLEX and USMLE, but there's so much overlap between the two that you can study for the USMLE and tack on OMM for the COMLEX (this is what most people I know do).

4) You can bill for OMM. Just sayin'

5) I love the campus feel of nova. It's well maintained, the students are friendly, and although it's not as big of an undergraduate presence as FSU (less "collegiate" if you care), there's still plenty of resources. The libraries are nice, the facilities are spotless and modern, and it's got one of the best gyms I've ever seen.

6) I hear the first year faculty at nova leaves something to be desired, but the second year is out of this world. A current student can fill in the gaps here.

did you get into USF honors? If so, you can follow the guaranteed admissions track to their medical school (7 years).

Have you considered Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton? The research opportunities at FAU are really growing, since they're now affiliated with both Scripps and Max Planck. I went to FAU for my undergrad and am now getting my MS in molecular bio. There are definitely some high quality instructors at FAU (not all of them, of course, but most I've had have been fantastic). A bunch of FAU'ers I know live in Ft. Lauderdale and make the commute. It would be a 25-minute train ride for you from the Ft. Laud Tri-Rail station with a 10-minute direct shuttle bus to the school (I'm a Tri-Rail veteran, myself - it only costs $50 per month for students, free bus ride). Another plus for you, besides being able to live at home, would be that FAU is public, unlike NOVA, so tuition will be much less.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. They were really helpful.

I am also heavily considering FIU. A friend of mine here at UMiami told that I should consider FIU because it is a good school if I wanted to go into premed.

Can anyone comment on FIU and what it has to offer?

Thank you again for your guys' time. I know you guys are busy, but your info helps young premeds like us make the right decisions.

A little background info: I am currently a University of Miami freshman. I am leaving because its too expensive even with their merit scholarship they gave me.
