would it get annoying if i counted down day by day until the 15th? Probably, so I wont. But seriously its gonna be a long six freaking days.

Does USU send emails, call, or packets in the mail to either accept or reject?

yeah, dont do a countdown plz...cause if my oct2nd does find out on oct 15th then ill be depressed.

One of the heads of admissions makes phone calls to inform applicants of their acceptances on the 1st and 15th of the month. Rejections and wait list notifications come via snail mail

email?? or just snail mail.......

pretty sure i remember the woman (i dont know remember her name - the nice one who was at the head of the conference table) saying that wait lists were sent via snail mail (not 100% sure about rejections)....

edit: but i specifically remember that they explained wait lists were only used when they deemed you acceptable for admission but had already filled all the spots....so for us, airforcedukie, the wait list shouldnt even be in the cards cause we were early in the cycle

wow, that's going to be a rough day for me (or a really good one!!). Sorry to have started such a stressful topic.

Yeah, at this point I dont think anyone will get waitlisted. They dont waitlist people that 'might' get in right? I thought I understood the same way you did goose, where the waitlist was used after slots were filled. If thats how it works no one in the first three interview sessions should get waitlisted. I say this now and am going to end up getting a big fat waitlist notice. Is that how it is? At this point it should either be in or not right? says something for early applications

Yeah, it could suck... it's nice to have this forum so we know when acceptances start being given out.

Also, I think last cycle a few people said they didn't get a phone call informing them of their conditional acceptance, only a letter.

Yeah, waitlist = you would have been admitted, but the class for your branch was full... for the early interviewees, will either be conditional acceptance, rejection, the other hold for people with problems with their app who get last priority (forget what the name is for this), or more silence.

so. would a rejection just be if you blew the interview? my impression was that up until then you had all the qualifications academics-wise...........but idk if they reevaluate that again or whatever.

also. as far as conditional/unconditional.......i have my physical stuff scheduled for fri/mon -- is unconditional only after you are all approved (& any idea how long this takes) ? i'm thinking this physical is less stringent than the ones the pilots have to go through......so hopefully not too much to worry about unless there's some lasting medical condition or whatever. that said......advice to anyone filling out DODMERB stuff... answer NO to everything you possibly can.....back in HS when I applied for ROTC they initially DQ'ed me for some skin condition I wrote that I had when I was younger but never came back after about age 6. & the waiver process is absolutely horrible. just FYI.

They gave the impression that you would be rejected only if you blew the interview and didn't come across as "normal," but I'm not entirely sure that's true.

You get an unconditional acceptance after you get clearance on your physical and from security. I think it takes 3-4 weeks for them to process your exam results after they receive them... I had my eye exam on Sept. 22 and they haven't gone through it yet.

For anyone who is interested about a rough timeline for the DoDMERB physical, I did mine on Sept. 11 and was cleared today (Oct. 9th)...so it takes roughly about a month.

And now the waiting game continues...

Cool, congrats.

Just declined an interview offer for USUHS.

Tough decision and I feel like ****, but it is what it is.

good luck. USU seems like the kind of school that you shouldnt go to unless you are 100% sure that its the right place for you - so maybe its for the best.

Got an e-mail today from USU saying I was physically qualified and within the weight and height range (I am actually surprised). I finished my physical less than two weeks ago.

That's interesting, since there are different height and weights for each service....good news though

"Congratulations! A review of your information in the DoDMERB system shows that
you are now MEDICALLY QUALIFIED and, as of today, you are listed as within the
accession standards for height and weight."

I applied Navy and on a great day am 6'3" 218lbs. So I thought I was over. Oh well.

I am interviewing this Thursday and haven't yet received any info about where to take the physical. Is that normal, should I call them up, or should I just ask about it on interview day? Thanks!

Hey all,

(forgive me for reposting this)

Does anyone have an interview for Nov yet?

I'm anticipating an invite and am trying to get an idea of where they are in scheduling. I'm assuming since we're almost in Oct, that all of the interview slots for Oct are booked, but I'm not sure, hence my question. (my Nov is crazy hectic, sooner I know the better) . . i luv the waiting game

thanks!

Hey,

I received an interview invite about one week ago for October 30th and had to reschedule it for November 6th.
Hope this helps

Aspiring PHS servant

Sweet thanks, yeah that does help. Helps the rest of us know where they are in scheduling. Looks like they've already scheduled the Nov. 6th interviews. Anybody have Nov. 13th (or later) yet?

at what point after an unconditional acceptance and before your respective officer training program do you actually get commissioned (or orders)? i know hpsp kids say that there are sometimes small ceremonies with their recruiters - how does this work with USU? Thanks.

Not sure when you'll get the commissioning paperwork/orders. You're pretty early in the game so you should get them way before you go to OIS. Anyway, the commissioning can be as informal as just another officer (I think 0-4 and above) swearing you in, in their office. Or you could have a ceremony and invite a bunch of people. (I had about a dozen). it's kinda special. . . you wanna take it seriously.

whatever you decide to do, make sure you retain copies of everything! (your commissioning paperwork, DODMERB physicals, etc). you'll be bombarded with paperwork.

I asked Rebecca about this during the interview day, and I think she said that everyone commissions at USUHS right before classes start (when you report to the school). FYI, she mentioned that I (as ROTC) would comission first here at my college (as a line officer) and then comission again when I got to USUHS (as a medical something or other). Perhaps non-prior students would do similar (comission before summer camp as a line with your recruiter and then as a medical at the school).

Oh, and she did say that you can have anyone commission you if you like. Is there really a o-4 and above rule? I thought any officer (ret/ad/other) would be just fine.

Best of luck to all!!!

make sure you talk with rebecca and make sure you're squared away for the DoDMERB while you're down there.

not sure about the O-4 rule . . .If that's what she told you then that's probably right.

My recruiter (a senior chief) said he would commission me. Maybe that sheds some light on the situation.

We haven't had any USUHS people commission with us that I know of, but we have had several AFIT/HPSP people commission with our graduating classes, so I think if you wanted to work it out with your recruiter you could do an actual commissioning ceremony that way.

Also, I check this page so often that it's getting ridiculous. The 15th needs to hurry up and come 🙂

and I realize that probably didn't make much sense, by "classes" I meant our ROTC commissioning classes. So if you are somewhat affiliated with a school/university you could probably commission with their senior ROTC class.

It sure is.

So, I'm still trying to decide how to rank my service preferences for my upcoming interview. I've done a search and pieced together some ideas as to which service I'd prefer. That said, are there ANY good websites that can give me a more complete picture of the medical corps for each service? In the interim, I guess I'll just continue punching key words into google and reading what pops out.

this forum is probably your best bet. If you're asking about specific quality of milmed hosptials/programs/rotations, check out the rotations thread.

if you're asking in general about service lifestyle, then again there are several postings here (probably scattered) that'll mention what it's like being in the USN/USA/or USAF.

Me personally, i like the Navy! b/c they're stationed close to the water, which means stationed closer to more metropolitan areas (which is probably better for practicing medicine). But I guess I'm bias b/c Im prior service.

Thanks DrMedal, I'll just keep perusing this forum. It does seem like everyone in the USU thread is pro-Navy, and I do see why.

yeah, speaking very loosely, I'd say morale in the USN tends to be higher than in the USA or USMC. But that's understandable, the USA/USMC are really feeling the brunt of this decade's wars . . .especially the USA.

anyway, it's hard to generalize so much. if you like living in metro areas (San Diego, DC, VA, HI), then USN is the way to go.

of course, there's more things to consider than geography.

So I'm trying to avoid studying and I am finally posting again. Hopefully I can help a little bit.

Every service has its pros and cons and each has its own personality. Your best bet is to try to talk to a few AD docs in each service and see which you can click with. But if that isn't possible, here is what I usually see as the major pros/cons:

Army:
Pro: more residency spots, more of the "specialized" residencies (peds subspecialities, prev med, etc.)
Con: lots of deployments, lots of smaller bases farther from the metro areas.

Navy:
Pro: good geographic locations for bases, fair number of residencies, typically don't deploy for over 6months (unless filling an IA in an Army spot, which is happening more and more these days)
Con: GMO (even if they say it is going away - getting that ideal residency might mean that you choose a "flight surgeon" spot for a few years anyway)

AF:
Pro: generally higher QOL - they take that stuff seriously - and they are smaller, so they can make big changes faster (ex: the AF is opened a couple of civilian training spots in EM to make up for the lack of training spots this year - that would take years for the Army and Navy to get through their systems.)
Con: fewer residency spots, and slightly less esprit de corps perhaps.

Check out http://www.militarygme.org/ for more details on residency spots.

Hope this helps.

Disclaimers: I'm Navy - but I tried to be objective!

Good luck in the next few days to everyone that interviewed in september. Hopefully those of us who did on the 25th will hear back. Anyone have a clue as to time? Morning? mid-day? night? Just wondering

good luck again

She's probably gong to be calling like 50+ people so it will probably be anytime during the day. Just my guess.

Good luck to you too.

Yay for living on the west coast...finally the time change pays off (assuming they get them all out by 5PM EST)

I recived my interview invite (Oct 30, yay!) more than two weeks ago, sent back an acceptence the same day, as well as the sheet requesting a student host. I ahven't heard back from the school yet. Is this normal? Do you do the physical before or after the interview? What about the security paperwork?

Fill out all the security paperwork ASAP, and bring it with you to the interview. Take care of the DoDMERB ASAP too, get it out of the way!

Hey Stillwaters I was in the same boat as you (except I interview this Thursday). I received an e-mail saying that they got my host application, but didn't hear anything afterwards. When I called today, they said a student host would try to call me, but to have a hotel reservation just in case. I recommend you get a hotel that you can cancel within 24 hours just in case as well. For the physical, it does not need to be complete before you interview. I never got an e-mail regarding that either; just go to www.dodmets.com and see if you can enter your information. Mine pulled up right away and I was able to schedule my physical. I'm not sure regarding the security paperwork; I'm active duty so they said they would be able to print something out the day of the interview. Good luck!

If you're already in the military, do you still have to complete the DoDMERB physical??? (or is it assumed you're fit for duty)

No, you still have to do it even if you are in the military. It won't necessarily be done by a military provider though; both portions of my physical are through civilian docs. It's funny, I just did a physical for HPSP and now I have to get poked and prodded again?

If you're already in the military, do you still have to complete the DoDMERB physical??? (or is it assumed you're fit for duty)

Ok, I have to write about this one! The short answer is YES!!!! you have to complete the DoDMERB for matriculation to the USUHS program. The long story: I am an AFROTC cadet who completed the DoDMERB in Feb of 07 in preparation for field training (which means I don't have to go to COT!!!!). I passed that, which I thought would be good enough for USUHS (fit to fight...yes). Unfortunetly, that DoDMERB becomes expired this Feb, which makes it invalid for USUHS purposes. The problem is that the DoD won't let me schedule a DoDMERB because they think I already have one on file (which I do now, but won't when matriculation time comes around). Therefore, if you find yourself in the same boat as me, have the DoDMERB scheduling people clear your file of any past DoDMERBs, and then start from scratch. Funny thing is, I will also have to get the MEPS physical too, in order to comission from the ROTC program. Fun stuff.

Oh, and I will mention that I didn't recieve the DoDMERB packet in the mail with the interview invite (due to the reason above). However, rebecca at USUHS has been more than helpful during this entire process!!!

Sorry for the long post...best of luck to all.

Concorde assigned me a doctor like an hour and a half away when there are perfectly good docs in town. I notice you can change your doctor if you get approval... is there a list of doctors that are acceptable somewhere?

thanks, that's good info. whatever, I wouldn't mind doing it, i've been poked and prodded by the military several times!

I had my eye and med exams for DODMERB last week and just today Concorde marked my application as complete. For those of you who are in the same position or have been DODMERB qualified already, do you know how long I'll have to wait to hear something back at this point?
