anyone find out on nov 1st?

also,

anyone hear anything yet from oct 2nd?

Forgive me if I sound stupid, I have no prior military experience. I was wondering what type of boots are standard for Air force officers (or if there is a distinction between branches). I work for an EMS agency, and they give up one free boot voucher per year, and I figure I might as well get them for free now, than wait till next year. If anyone knows I would be very appreciative. Thanks!

might be worth just throwing up a new thread in the forum - some of the AF attendings might not check the USU thread and they could probably give a quick answer

Those are some of the common ones (I think). Pretty much anything that's sage in color will be fine. You could go for black boots now, but sage's will be required starting 2011. Oh, and I wouldn't buy any boots on that website. They seem to be a little more expensive than other places (I got the belleville zipper boots for much on base for much less then they're selling all the other ones)

For the current Navy students:

As an AD Coast Guard Officer transferring to the Navy, I am not required to attend OIS, so I will not receive the uniform issue. I am trying to figure out what uniforms I need to start tracking down at that various exchanges.

Should I be looking for NWU or woodland cammies?
Do you wear Service Khaki or Wash Khaki?
Is Black Service Dress ever worn or should I wait for the "Throwback" Khaki Service Dress?
Any reason to get Dinner Dress or Full Dress?
Do you ever wear Summer Whites?
Should I get a khaki Combo Cover or stick with just a white one?

I know that eventually a full seabag is required, I just don't want to break the bank on soon to be outdated uniforms. Any help is appreciated.

Can anybody address these questions? Please.

How does relocating work? Does the government help us relocate? Do we have to move before leaving for OBC (or COT, OIS)? Do we get reimbursed for moving fees?

yes, probably (definitely makes sense), yes.

Congratulations! A review of your information in the DoDMERB system shows that you are now MEDICALLY QUALIFIED and, as of today, you are listed as within the accession standards for height and weight.

The Office of Admissions has been informed of your new status.

Congratulations, again!
Rebecca

have you gotten your conditional acceptance yet?

I don't know that anybody here can address these questions yet, especially since we're in the middle of a uniform change.

My guess is that we'll wear khakis (aka CNTs, not wash khakis, which are only worn underway), and some sort of cami uniform. maybe the new ones, but maybe the old BDUs.

yes, we still wear the summer whites, i'd imagine they do so at USUHS too, (for pics, formals, etc). so I'd hang on to those!

In any case, they should be sending you all that information well before school starts (I'd say sometime in May, June), giving you two months to get your uniforms ready. that should be plenty of time.

yes, you should get your formal Orders first, probably will come with your commissioning paperwork, or maybe before.

then you can schedule a PCS (permanent change of station) move. Contracted movers will come over, pack your stuff, and haul it away in a big truck. they'll store it while you're at OIS/OBC/COT, then when you find a place to live they'll deliver it.

Some cautionary notes:
1. Don't let them move anything of great value (i.e. jewelry, pictures, expensive guitars!). Ship those items yourselves (store them with your parents, have them ship it when you get settled).
2. Things of Semi-Value: TVs, appliances. Its ok to let them move it, just take pictures of everything, make sure you have receipts. if anything is damaged, you can file a claim afterwards.
3. the trucks are usually very big (18-wheelers sometimes), check with the movers before they come. If they can't fit into your apt parking lot, you may have to lug your stuff to the street!

the transportation office where you book your move can give you all sorts of other good tidbits.

From what the students told me - they wear cami's everyday that they can because of the comfort level. Thursdays are mandatory class As, khakis, etc... though. (and even though it doesnt count for Coastie who is not going to ODS....ODS is done entirely in khakis. Except liberty which i think you need to wear whites - and graduation which is in blues (if i remember correctly)

mslall:
As for moving down there.....i chatted with a few students about this and from their insight (this is what i would do if i got in) - i would go down before officer training to find a place and reserve it, then after ODS, make the move down to DC which would give you about 2 weeks prior to orientation to settle in. (although if you have a family or want a house out in like Gaithersburg vs. just an apartment it'll likely be a much longer process). I know a bit more about this and chatted with students about specific apt buildings and locations so feel free to pm me and we can chat

nope, which is ridiculous since i interviewed sept 18th. just called in to inquire and she told me a decision hasn't been made yet and she seemed to be confused on why. service academy applications may be pushed off to the side for some reason--although i've never heard of someone not getting in from a service academy. still, frustrating... they meet every 1st/15th right? so i guess mine was pushed back another 2 weeks. *sigh*

they call/mail stuff on the 1st/15th. Not exactly sure when the adcom meets.

So if i was looking to rent/buy a house, Gaithersburg would be the area to look?

Depends on what you're looking for, if you want to buy you will need to start in Gaithersburg and likely extend to Germantown or Clarksburg to keep your payment around your BAH. You could alleviate some of that problem by buying a house and renting out one or two rooms to other people though.

The rent market is very reasonable here right now and you will probably find better value because few people are in position to sell their homes with the depreciation that has occurred in the past year.

I live in a townhouse in Germantown, theres a train stop a block from my house that I can take to the Rockville metro and be to USUHS in about an 35 minutes (It takes roughly 45 minutes to drive in from exit 15 on 270 if you leave at 6). I really like the MARC (commuter train) if you end up looking anywhere thats not right off the metro line and you don't have to pay 5 bucks a day in parking like you do if you drive to a metro stop. The military will give you metro passes for free but you can't apply them to parking fees.

Hope that helps some

do you have dependents?

I do too (wife and baby, who'll be 2 next Fall). I've been thinking about renting a house too, in either Gaith. or Germantown. I'm a little worried about the commute though. I hate driving! I might look around the Rockville area too, that's a little closer (albeit a little pricier too).

jump back a few pages in this thread or search for something like "housing in bethesda" because i remember reading a few threads that discussed buying houses and such. If you want a house, you'll have to commute a ways to school but Gaithersburg is really nice and Silver Spring is too....Also, you might want to look and see if any MSIIIs or MSIVs have houses that they are subletting or selling while theyre away on rotations or graduating.

If you're interested in a townhouse, then thats a different story in location and you could look into townhouse condos...theres a lot of these around (north bethesda area being close to school)

apartments are everywhere

**disclaimer: my analysis is just from my dad living in bethesda for years and me getting a taste of the area...and chatting with some students. I might be a bit off. I remember that bubblehead2md really knew what he was talking about in terms of housing so you might want to try to get in touch with him or some current students who live in houses....im more interested in bethesda apt's myself.

edit: germantown's nice too =D

Germantown is very family oriented right? What's the commute like? From what I remember, hell has no wrath like DC-Metro traffic.

no dependents...yet--girlfriend and 2 big dogs. Probably looking for a townhouse, although a house with a yard would awesome for the dogs. Something that is close to public transit would be really nice. Suggestions?

I, like you, freaking HATE driving, especially in heavy traffic.

quick edit: if i changed the wording a little to this i'd have a pretty nice personal add, ha

I live in Bethesda now, and there are a lot of houses/townhouses nearby that are for rent. They tend to be hard to find in Bethesda proper, but just north in Rockville there are a bunch, and in DC. With the housing stipend, splitting a house near Tenleytown, Van Ness, Cleveland Park, and possibly even Dupont metro stops is a possibility. If you have a car, there tends to be cheap housing in Silver Spring. It's like a 5 minute drive, but an hr metro ride. Germantown and Gaithersburg are good ideas if you have a family and want to have a house for them, but your commute will be significantly longer.

Also, because of the government transhare, taking public transportation is a good idea. They pay up to $110 (it goes up periodically, so it may be more now) a month for public transportation, so living near a metro is a definite plus.

Here is what you will need as a Naval Officer:

NWU vs Woodland: The NWU will roll out in the capital region in October of 2009. You will need woodland until that point.

Service vs Wash Khaki: Wash khaki is usually only worn aboard ship, so you will need the service khaki, which can be either the CNT version or the poly/wool. I think most prefer the poly/wool blend these days.

Service Dress Blue: you will need this. Service Dress Khaki will not be taking away the requirement for Service Dress Blue.

Dinner Dress: Not required for O3 and below...wait until promoted to 04 to buy it.

Summer Whites: Required for all Naval Officers.

Khaki combo cover: +/-, the actual cover doesn't cost that much, so might as well have it around. It's the frame that costs an arm and a leg and you need that for whites, so might as well pick up the khaki cover as well.

Don't forget you will also need Choker Whites.

Hey all,

We currently rent a townhouse in Montgomery Village MD. It will be available 1 AUG 09 for move in. The landlord will be deploying to OIF he is a Navy GMO. He'd like to rent to a USUHS student/family. It is a tri level 4 bd 3.5 ba with garage. Hardwood floors on main floor and fireplace. Also has back patio and yes you can have grills. PM me if anyone is interested and I can get you in touch with the guy. I will also be posting with student spouses club and around school.

Takes about ~25 min door to door to get to school by car if you leave at 6:40a; classes start at 7:30a. I carpooled with a friend part of 1st year and all of 2nd year worked out great. Shady Grove metro station is not too far, my wife and I use it to ride downtown. She commutes into DC for work 5 days a week.

Rent is slightly less than BAH w/ dependents.

Anyway...

CoastieDoc: You have all three of these uniforms already. The Coast Guard supply system didn't reach any farther than the Navy for these uniforms, just get them restriped/reboarded with the Navy insignia. The buttons might be subtly different, but I wouldn't sweat it.

Of course, the question is whether you can fit into your graduation whites after 2 years at sea....

If you had been going into the Air Force, you would have been really hooked up, as trops = air force blues, complete with windbreaker and trench coat.

Of course, my choice of Army means a lot of useless uniforms..... :smack:

It definitely looks as if things are running behind schedule this year. I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Way to go in getting the medical done with already. I'm sure you'll be getting a call shortly.

Hey giuseppe, I know this won't come as much of a consolation to you, but this post makes my day. I was totally bummed that they "hadn't made a decision yet" (which I assumed equaled "don't bother us, we'll send your rejection next week). So, here's to hope that they really are simply behind schedule.

somebody posted here a couple weeks ago that they'd been placed on the alternate list (they found out right away). So i think if the adcom is surely going to accept/reject you, then you get notified right away.

If you haven't heard anything yet, chances are they're holding onto your application to compare with future applicants. Now I doubt they're going to hold on to them until February! I think they just want to compare to the next round or two of interviewers. so you should be hearing back soon . . . .sit tight! remember, at least you applied very early, so you should have a decision earlier than the rest.

i get the feeling they have a hard time handing out rejection letters because so many people who get accepted end up becoming medically disqualified or realize the military isn't for them (which is why the waitlist is ridiculously deep and actually moves). i'm sure it doesn't help that it is also free to apply and they receive thousands of applications from all across the spectrum. i will give them the benefit of the doubt knowing we are in a recession and usuhs has never looked so attractive (especially depending on tomorrow's elections) adding to the delay...but 4-6 weeks is 4-6 weeks. this is week 7 and i'm medically qualified with a security clearance. that being said, i have not been impressed with their admissions office (or the presentation of the school at the interview) compared to other schools i'm interviewing (from a professionalism/organization standpoint). unfortunately, i have heard similar comments from people who have applied to usuhs in the past or are currently applying. now i'm beginning to see some of the complaints made in the past for myself. something needs to change there...am i wrong?

if there is a delay, which seems pretty clear by now, they should at least send an e-mail keeping us in the loop, if only to stop the dozens of awkward phone calls coming in inquiring about their status. or adjust the initial e-mail they send out with specific time frames for hearing back. don't they know how much pre-meds worry about this sort of stuff? i mean, it's just our careers and the rest of our lives they have in their hands.

i only gripe because i love the school, love the mission, and want to see it score a 10 across the board.

seems like the bureaucracy that is government at its finest is working against you

(or the presentation of the school at the interview) compared to other schools i'm interviewing (from a professionalism/organization standpoint).

just outta curiosity--aside from their tardiness in getting back to you--what else seemed unprofessional or disorganized at the school on the day of the interview? we can compare notes when I go on 11/20.

we were crammed into a room with not enough seats. actually the room didn't even have enough room for the table and the chairs. we were asked 5-7 times if we completed a worksheet (you had to be there, people were asking if this was a joke). the room we eventually moved to was missing a ceiling. the old medical lady (rebecca is new) talked about grey's anatomy and scrubs like we all cared. granted, i assume she was trying to make a joke or put us at ease but in reality it just came across as unprofessional given the situation (you really had to be there to catch on to the awkwardness of it). the slides weren't up to date and the O-6 questioned the validity of several of the statements on the slides like she was seeing them for the first time. etc.. just sloppy.

i mean, once we were done with the admissions side of it, i started enjoying myself. the students at lunch were the best group i've met at any interview and the interviewers were superb. we were free to roam around the campus and many of the students were more than willing to give me the real scoop.

again, some of it was just run sloppy and took advantage of our situation. we all flew out there, some of us as far as the west coast. obviously, the admissions presentation would never change my desire to attend usuhs, but it's not like they're in a war-torn or operational environment struggling to keep their heads above water. in the end of the day, it is an academic institution. coming from another military academic institution, i was slightly aghast with their initial impression (probably the closest thing hundreds of future physicians come to military medicine). all they have to do is look 30 minutes away to the naval academy or any other service academy to see that you can run a military academic institution with as much class as an ivy league school.

do i sound snobbish? i don't mean to. i just see things i wish to fix.

I'll agree with you about the cramped room and missing tiles. I did ask the students during lunch about that, wanting to see if that was the norm or an exception. For what it's worth, they said they had been doing some construction recently and it was definitely more of an exception than a norm. Still, you'd think they'd be able to use a room that wasn't in the middle of construction. I was also impressed with the rest of the day. Rebecca seems to be doing a great job getting up to speed. It seems like it's more of a problem with the admissions administration...7 weeks to make a decision is ridiculous.

As far as the briefings/presentations, I think they must have gotten their acts together by the 25th.

Hey guys I just got a letter informing me the admission committee is pleased to tell me they placed me on the alternate list! Letter dated Oct. 30.

I interviewed 9/18 and everything seemed to go well. My MCAT is a major weak spot but I was very optimistic about my chances of admission. Now I am livid.

So I want to go HPSP now, but what if I join and am plucked off the alt. list? Also the letter says I could get in as late as late August, but wouldn't that mean missing officer training (assuming I don't go HPSP...).

Incredibly angry and depressed right now...

Sorry to hear the bad news. As far as training goes, I know lots of people who for whatever reason weren't able to go before their first year, and thus went after the first year in place of the shadowing thing.

bummer . . .thanks for sharing . . .just outta curiosity, how did they inform you (via snail mail or email?).

everything i've been told about the alternate list is bad, that's it's pretty much like a rejection (b/c they'd have to go thru everyone on the accepted and waitlist). so if you get into another school, I'd advise going HPSP. Or if you really want to go to USUHS, then apply again next cycle.

Oh and I had to go to my family physician and today saw an ENT to get the freaking wax removed from my ears in order to get medically qualified. Likewise, I learn of my rejection a few hours later. I'll stop venting now...

That sucks dude. Sorry to hear that.

On the plus, the HPSP physical was a freakin cakewalk. Talk to your recruiter. They will send you on a free trip to Madigan Army Hospital or Brooke Army Hospital for a tour and physical. They paid my flight and gave me a stipend for food the entire three days. It was a really awesome way to see milmed for a premed person. Plus, I made like $200 after they reimbursed my gas, parking and food. And the river walk was fun to go see.

Good luck.

Does anyone know if we can do clinical rotations at hospitals abroad? That sheet they gave us at the interview seemed like only domestic, but it would be pretty cool to do surgery at Landstuhl...

No OCONUS clinical rotations except for Tripler. LRMC is also not a teaching MTF; you don't even find interns/residents there.

Not quite true. The IM residents at my hospital are able to rotate at LRMC. I'm not sure if it's an elective, but several of my friends have been there.

That might be true, I guess, but I'm just going off what I was told (by a few general surgeons) / observed this past summer while I was at LRMC.

i thought I remembered reading somewhere that you could do your family practice rotation in Rhota Spain, it may have been in the admissions catalogue. Not sure though

If you go HPSP and are plucked off the alternate list you can switch to USUHS. At least you got alternate and not a pure rejection.

Any Naval Academy Mids applying to USUHS: If you could please PM me I'd appreciate it. I am trying to get a line on your Uniform Swap Shop (that what we called it at CGA). Thanks.

Just watched the Fighting For Life trailer. Again. Am also reading "War Surgery in Iraq and Afghanistan: Case studies 2003-2007." I've spent the better part of the last 20 years wanting to be a military doctor. I guess I can wait a little longer.

I hope I hear from USUHS next week. That would be amazing.

Good luck to everybody still waiting. Congrats to those who got in. Happy posting in the USUHS Class of 2013 thread.

The war surgery book is really awesome. One of my interviewers pulled it off of his shelf and we talked about it for like 20 minutes. How many times have you watched the fighting for life trailer? I'd say i've seen it over 10 times. You can't just watch it once. Its like pringles

you get an email when you're medically cleared. You dont get one for security. I'm guessing unconditional comes via snail mail since i've been cleared medically and by security (found out when admissions called and told me they received my acceptance form)

What is pfa? (I probably sound like n00b for asking)

physical fitness assessment i believe

edit: i dont think nonprior service should worry about this - maybe they needed it from ROTC cadets
