The war surgery book is really awesome. One of my interviewers pulled it off of his shelf and we talked about it for like 20 minutes. How many times have you watched the fighting for life trailer? I'd say i've seen it over 10 times. You can't just watch it once. Its like pringles

I'll stop watching the trailer when someone uploads a torrent of the damn movie!

you get an email when you're medically cleared. You dont get one for security. I'm guessing unconditional comes via snail mail since i've been cleared medically and by security (found out when admissions called and told me they received my acceptance form)

What is pfa? (I probably sound like n00b for asking)

It comes via snail mail and they send them out in batches.

physical fitness assessment i believe

edit: i dont think nonprior service should worry about this - maybe they needed it from ROTC cadets

confirmed. yeah, I just got the email. although I think I messed something up when I gave contact info bc they keep sending it to my mom.

tell me about it! when is it being released in bethesda?

It was released about a year ago in Bethesda. I can't remember what they sadi future plans for release were. I think it was to run on cable and then maybe go to DVD? I really don't know for sure but I don't think it's supposed to do theater rounds again that already happened.

For those of you who are interested and live close to Michigan, there is a marathon in May in Traverse City. Anyway, training for a marathon is a decent way to stay in shape and maybe work off the rest of those beers you've been drinking. It's a good flat marathon, on the coast of lake michigan. I usually travel around on Saturdays for a long run, so please PM me if you're interested. This is a smaller marathon so sign up will fill up fast. Sign-ups open up later this month.

i hate running. hate it. but im gonna do a triathlon or two (just sprint distance) this spring/summer if youre up for doing one before officer training/school. havent registered yet but its not a long ride for me to come up near lansing/west mi, or for you to come down to a.a./detroit. I'll shoot you a msg when i find some races if youre interested.

I am down. However, I don't have a bike. Ill see what I can do about that.

LOL regarding "just sprint distance."

ive never done tri's before...im just gonna try to get into them when the weather clears up because i picked up a new road bike. As far as i know, sprint distance is the shortest and just because its called sprint doesnt mean im not gonna crawl across the finish line after hobbling through the run

p.s. airforcedukie is badass....i remember reading an earlier post when she was like "yeahh, i wont be home that day cause im gonna do an ironman"....HOLY CR@P IRONMAN! - im gonna have to ask her to whip me into shape!

Now I get it. I thought a triathlon was always the same distance (like 600 yd swim, 20mi bike, 5K). I agree that anyone who can finish an ironman is badass. The morning of the Detroit Marathon I was telling my uncle I was considering doing an iron man in the spring. At mile 20 I realized what a terrible idea it was. Marathons are my limit for now.

the distance you listed is the typical sprint distance i think...then theres like olympic and ironmans and whatnot

BUT if you truly want to test yourself why not give a Deca-Ironman a shot: http://www.decaironuk.com/

24 mile swim, 1,120 mile bike, 262 mile run.

triathlons& marathons are awesome. great stress-relievers 🙂
I just finished the FL ironman & it was by far one of the most rewarding experiences I've had yet. .... &for those of you going to USUHS next year, I highly recommend the Marine Corps Marathon! (or 10K)

while we're on the subject of fitness does anyone know if there is a master's swim program at the pool/fitness center down the street from the school?

There is, I think they meet at 0600 almost daily...I'll check to be sure. The pool is never packed to full normally, I've only had to wait a couple times, and shared lanes a dozen or so during open swims ~1700; I've never had a wait/share at lunch.

That is def. nuts!!! If I can find a deal on a reasonably good bike this winter I would love to try some triathlons in addition to the bayshore marathon. I think that would be enough to ensure not being embarrassed at OIS. My buddy went a year ago and said it was a cake walk and he can't run for sh#$.

anyone expecting to hear back this week?

I wish. I interviewed on Oct 23rd, so I don't expect anything until December. That said, given the uncertainty of the whole process, anything is possible.

On another note, if I were going to send additional materials to update my file, who would I address them to? The Admissions Committee? Dr. Calloway? Someone else?

probably nakeisha i would imagine.....but i'd just call the admissions office and ask for the address to send an update sheet to....i bet you could email it

Roberie...oct 2nd interview and ive just given up on "expecting" to hear....so it could come any day or it could take a month is the way im looking at it

9/18 and in the same boat. Hoping to hear, Wanting to hear, Afraid to hear, but not Expecting.

I assume that notices are going out this Friday to someone, so keep your phones on just in case.

im not holding my breath

To me, it seems reasonable that Oct 2nd people would hear back this week--maybe even some Oct 9th people. However, their process seems unpredictable. Didn't somebody from Oct 9th already get accepted? Weird how that works, maybe their file got placed in the "wrong" stack.

I've all but given up on trying to decipher the method to their madness. Best to just stick this whole USUHS business in the back of my mind, but it ain't gonna happen.😀

wow, that's amazing, that you haven't heard anything back yet. It's been nearly 2 months!

well, my gut feeling is that the delay is good news (somewhat, obviously not as good as getting an acceptance right away). B/c if they wanted to reject you, they would've done so by now (or placed you on the alternative list). So they're probably hanging onto your application for further comparison to the rest of the applicant pool. So my guess is you'll probably get in, or wait-listed. And if you're wait-listed this early, that's tantamount to getting in.

so hang in there.

Tell me about it.

You nailed about where I'm at. At this point, not having heard means I'm still in the running, which is nice. Past that, I'm trying to only check this thread three times a day and staying busy.

Here's to phone calls tomorrow.

On the upside, I am now officially DD2368 Medically Qualified. No remedials or anything. Woo hoo.

Dear Sarg's Kid,
I regret the Admissions Committee has acted unfavorably on your application...
... Advice for reapplicants... Wish you success in your future...

.

To the rest of you, good luck with everything. I'll see you Army folks at OBC this summer (as I'll be going HPSP), and we'll meet again in the medical corps.

Best wishes,
Sarg's Kid

Wow, that sucks. It sounds like they passed up a great applicant who was in it for the right reasons... I don't get it. I'm glad you have other options though and hope you enjoy med school & HPSP.

bummer man, so sorry to hear that. that's really odd, you got into med school elsewhere, which means you're a quality applicant. I don't understand why they'd interview you and then reject you?! at least they'd alternate list you. Did your interview there go well? anyway, at least you got in elsewhere.

Yeah, I thought I'd at least get an alternate list or something, but no. Cold rejection.

I thought my interviews went very well. When I called to get some more info, they told me that there was nothing but good stuff in my file.

Oh well. I do believe that there is a hand of providence in all of this and at least I am going somewhere. I can still serve my country, even if it's not at USUHS.

Sorry to hear about USUHS. Did they send an email? Or call? Man, 2 months worth of waiting and they didn't at least give you an alternate position. Did they give you detailed info about the decision or was it the perfunctory response they give every one?

Now I am freakin' out. I was in the 9/25 batch and haven't heard anything back and I am a mediocre applicant that hasn't heard back from any other schools... Glad to hear you have an acceptance somewhere else. Good luck in your endeavors.

To Sarg's Kid,

Sorry buddy. At least, as you stated, you will still have the opportunity to serve your country.

Sarg's kid -- was this notification via snail mail/email?

So, some more calls should go out tomorrow afternoon if the pattern continues.

It seems they are ranking applicants and then accepting people as they move down from the top and rejecting people from the bottom based on how the new interviewees stack up. Which is strange since I thought USU didn't really care about stats so long as people were above a certain threshold and displayed sufficient ability to succeed in med school, the military, and medicine. They usually just fill up the class ASAP with all the qualified applicants on a first come-first served basis. I guess they are banking on the economy making the school seem like a better option for top applicants. But what does the school get out of having higher GPA/MCAT averages?

Good luck to the people still waiting.

Yeah, i think you might be right. So applying incredibly early doesn't help if you have low numbers, b/c they're just going to sit on your app anyway for further comparison with the rest of the applicant pool. So it's not completely a 'rolling admissions' process.

Ok . . .whatever, they're certainly entitled to administer whatever process they see fit. Of course, that doesn't help of our blood pressures! . . .but we just gotta roll with it.

But what does the school get out of having higher GPA/MCAT averages?

Notoriety , respect as a medical school , possibly even maintenance of their accreditation. You don't want to be admitting applicants with extremely low numbers (as compared to other schools), b/c that could raise some eyebrows . . .

I'm sure it's factored into your ranking, but it's not the HUGE advantage it used to be where they accepted the first 170 people who were qualified and then used the rest of the qualified applicants to "fill in the blanks" with the waitlist. Looking at the past couple years' USU admissions threads, practically no one who interviewed early posted about being rejected before Dec/Jan and we already have a couple. Sucks for us.

True, I suppose it's a factor in attracting non-prior service students. I don't think it's really an accreditation factor considering there are a few schools with truly awful averages who are accredited.

I interviewed on November 6, 2008.
There was an applicant there that had already been accepted. But had to re-apply because the deferral was not accepted.

USUHS does not seem to be fond of deferrals. What do y'all think?

Does USUHS usually call for acceptances on Thursdays? I thought it was on the 15th of every month?

not fond of....not granting any.....same thing

I just called admissions and they told me to check back next week.....grr

Wow. I wonder if that's because they are deliberating or because they are tired of people calling in for updates. I wanted to call in as well, but haven't had the time (PST here in California so when I get off of work, it's too late to call in).

I am in the waiting line too... hopefully there are still enough spots to get an outright conditional acceptance, but I'd still be happy with a waitlist. Does anyone know about how many people have been accepted (or how many slots are still available)?

Good luck all!!!

I interpreted it as them just not really wanting to deal with more neurotic people calling in and asking for updates 🙂 She didn't talk to me for very long, I just said that I interviewed on Oct 2 and was wondering when I should expect to hear back.

For those who received "unfavorable" notifications -- was this via email or regular mail?

Rejections come via snail mail.

No one I know heard anything back today.

Does USUHS have a "second look" weekend or admitted students day? I'd like to go back one more time before deciding.

probably not . . . but if you paid your way to go back out there, I'm sure they'd hook you up with people if you wanted to chat more . . . Of course, you could arrange that yourself too.

yeah I'd seen this before . . . just wondering if there was a change, in case they might be delayed . . . looks like its still the same.

What was your impression of the interview day? of the school?

Congrats to all the accepted so far...if we get a call, how long afterwards should we expect materials in the mail...anyone else accepted to PHS?
