Anyone know when welcome weekend money and form are due??

I figured ASAP, but I haven't sent mine in either, because I haven't figured out my question above 🙄 I'll probably send it in this weekend

Yeah i have been telling myself the same thing that i should get it in this weekend. I assume as long as they get it before than the event then there is no problem.

About the Welcome Weekend... I'm going to be going to it with another friend from college who is also going to be in our class, but he's still 20.. Would he be able to get into the Lounge? I wasn't sure if it was 18+ or 21+...

The Lounge is 21+. Does he look like you at all? Though I would never condone the use of another's ID 🙄 If he's vertically challenged, you might be able to smuggle him in if you wear a trenchcoat

If we (my husband and I) don't get to stay with a student, we are planning on getting a hotel. I think we should try to coordinate a cheap (but very nice hotel). I have seen some 4*s in Houston going for $30-$50 for that weekend. Anyone else interested?

Do you pay the $35 for each of you for the weekend? Im trying to figure out how much I need to pay for me and my gf.

Hey guys-

I'm a second year at UT Houston and unexpectedly, I had to terminate my lease. Alot of incoming first years choose to stay at the Lanesborough. It is really awesome and right on the rail. There's a gym, security guard, etc. If you are planning on getting an apt. in Houston, this is the best one to get. It's really nice and safe. If you were already planning on staying here, why not get a free month's rent? If you sign a lease there in May and request my apt., I'll pay a month of your rent. From the bedroom window, you could see incoming trains and by the time you get downstairs to the station, there'd be a train waiting for you. Please help me out!! And what's not to like about a month's free rent?

🙂

Ohh, the Lounge...I got kicked out of that place at our first block party 😎
and yeah, it is 21+

bit of advice for anyone else going to the Lounge...don't try to reach over the bar and make your own drinks. they don't like that too much

Thats a great deal. My gf and I just checked out almost all the apartments in the area and have decided to go with the Gates at Hermann Plaza. They have an awesome deal going on there and if you want to get a pet they have a great policy. If you adopt from the houston spca the pet deposit is waived as is the pet rent!! That's awesome around here. We were also considering the Greenbriar which is right on the rail and had a dope special going on, but I think the special isnt as dope as of tomorrow. Anyway, good luck getting someone to take your spot.

what is the special at the Gates?

Anyone considering living in MidTown or is that an older crowd?

I hear nice things about UT-H housing. I just placed a $200 deposit for UT-H housing on El Paseo (new apt). 6-month lease. after the 6 mo., no-lease, same rate, pay by month. water and gas free. washer and dryer. UT-H shuttle stops outside.

I dont know about the UTH on Cambridge.

btw, what's "bump"?

I live in housing on Cambridge now, and it's not bad. My biggest complaint is the community laundry facilities. But I will be in building 10 of the new housing on July 1st.

"bump" is just post to bring the thread back to the top of the forum page so it doesn't get lost on page 5

The Gates is a beautiful facility. It is right on Hermann Park (literally across the street). It was built in 2001 so it is very new. The floor plans are really nice and the space is effectively used. I looked at the floorplan for the el paseo housing and there is SUCH a waste of space in the larger 1 BR. Its like there is a long unusable hallway from the living room to the BR which is on the OTHER side of the apartment. The gates also seems to have good diversity (which is important to my gf and I), and they have a shuttle to the med center. Furthermore, they have a nice small gym, a pool table, and parking garages which are adjoined to each building. Overall the property is just well put together and the management company seems excellent. Finally the price right now is unbeatable (for the type of complex that it is). We will be getting a 752 sq ft 1BR that markets for 910+ for about 730 with all the incentives. Plus we will have to pay NOTHING to have a pet, no rent, no deposit, etc. Additionally, they are waiving the app fee and halving the deposit. Its just a good time to get in at this particular property. It was a tough choice though between this and the Greenbriar which is also a wonderful property (a little older-92), but INCREDIBLY convenient to the metro, which was a huge selling point. We are going to try the Gates given the phenomenal deal, and if after a few months we don't like it, we will get on the waitlist probably for the greenbriar (the only thing not to like about the Gates is that it is inconvenient to the metro and right now they are doing some construction on almeda right outside).

Oh yeah, and midtown apts seemed a bit too pricey for us. We wanted to stay below $800 and I don't think that's feasible for a 1 BR out there.

Is the gates deal open to anyone, is it a special they are running?

Is Midtown where all the bars area for yuppies?

It is open to anyone, and yes these are specials which may or may not last. I am still unsure of why they knock so much off the price. It seems pretty excessive and that there should be a reason for it, but I guess its all good. I am not sure how long they will last, but its a great deal. Of course, I still havent signed up......the greenbriar is so damn convenient to the metro......I am so indecisive over the relatively unimportant life decisions.....

Hey, for those of us from out-of-state, is it worth our while to buy a place to get Texas residency? The out of state tuition is $23,000 per year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to establish residency you need to be living and working in Texas for 12 consecutive months. The primary purpose of your residency cannot be in order to attend an educational institute. You should probably talk to financial aid about out-of-state scholarships. I know UTSW offers in-state tuition for out-of-staters if you earn a $1000 scholarship.

Dammit! I knew about UTSW's scholarship but I got waitlisted there. UT-houston was my #2 choice. Do you think they'd give me a similar deal? I just found out that I am in at my state school (University of Nevada). So should I defect from this thread and go there? Or would it be worth my while to go to UTH? UTH did look much better, but i dunno about 23,000 vs. 10,000/year better.

What do you guys think will happen to UT-H in the new rankings? They are currently 53. I am hoping they go up!

Rankings are wonky - http://homepage.mac.com/dsacco/rankings.html

Just find the school that fits you - that's where you will find the success you need to get into the residency program you want.

Defecting is very unpatriotic. You should go to UTH. Have you seen the TMC???!!!

If you talk to the financial aid office, they might cut you a deal.

I went down this weekend looking for an apartment. I too looked at many different ones. I ended up signing at a place called Alta Lofts (www.altalofts.com). These are brand new, the apartment that I was assigned will not be done until end of April/early May. I got a 809 sq. ft. 1 BR/1 BA/Study Node for $820 a month (normally $1015 a month, but with construction specials price came down). This place has more of a loft feel, stained concrete floors/exposed ducting/not a lot of wasted space, so if this appeals to you, they are having great specials now as well! 🙂

For Welecome Weekend is everyone going by themselves, or w/ parents, friends, etc ?

You know, we didn't even end up checking that place out because of the prices. Ill have to think about this new info now.....I think they are RIGHT across the street from the Gates though.
My main concern right there is transportation. Are you planning to ride a bike to campus when you have to go outside of the shuttle times? How about using the rec? It seems so close, but it also seems a bit less convenient than some of the others. (in my massive indecision, I now think we'll end up at the Greenbriar-the convenience of the metro seems to have won out.....for now).

*edit* Just looked them up....not at all where I thought, sorry

It'll be me and the woman. Can't wait to meet yous guys (I've decided to stop with the adoption of "y'all" and take it back to my Brooklyn days).

I think I am just going to go by myself... I don't think my bf would be comfortable with me dragging him all around.

But if you get a job in Texas.. are married to someone who has a job in Texas.. have parents that have a place in Texas you can claim residency based on other things than pure educational. It is not hard to get around the loopholes in this state.

Either way, I hope you make a decision soon so that people on the waitlist at either school can move up.

People with bf, gf, etc. Are they planning to move with you to Houston?

Anybody's spouses starting to look for jobs or has one already? My husband Eric is looking for a job doing public relations or community relations at a hospital in Houston. Luckily Houston has lots of hospitals.

Tiffany

The Alta Lofts are those that are RIGHT across from the Gates. I am planning on riding a bike during off shuttle hours. It is about half a mile to the Medical Center. The rec center there at the apartments will be open from 5 am to 12pm. I don't think I'll be working out at 2am anyway, so....As jdovez, you mentioned, the convienance of the Light Rail is a big selling point. My parents (mainly my mother) wanted me in something relatively new, and the Alta Lofts were brand new so she is thrilled about that.

I will be attending Welcome Weekend by myself and am already getting antzy! It is going to be so much fun meeting my fellow classmates! 😀

As for my boyfriend, he probably is going to be put back on travel with his job so we have decided to see how the first year goes - and go from there.

I'm going to the welcome weekend by myself. Does anyone know if there's a deadline for the form? I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to go. When I checked plane tickets prices a few weeks ago, they were outrageous. I checked this past weekend and they went down considerably. Someone explain that one to me 😕 I'm going to just be mailing mine out today. Maybe I'll put in priority mail to make sure it gets there in a reasonable time frame.

I know it is unpatriotic 🙁 And I liked UT-H orders of magnitude more than UNSOM. So I guess I will try and come up with the money somehow. 😳 I hope you all go to welcome weekend, can't wait to meet you!

I haven't decided whether or not to bring my boyfriend, I'm afraid he would be bored, but I think he is kinda interested in going. Guess I should decide soon..

Just reading about all these significant others makes me want to gag :barf:

Is there a medical school where the majority of students are single, lonely, and bitter? 😳

Bring him along, I'm sure he'll enjoy it either way....either meeting cool med school students, or making fun of the "dorky" students when you get home.....but I don't speak about experience or anything....

I was curious if anyone knows about the parking situation at The Lounge? I'm looking for a hotel and wanted to find something relatively close, since we aren't even meeting til 9:30. Any input would be welcomed! Thanks.

Nice to see that getting into med school hasn't gone to your head or anything. 🙂

My number's still the same, so call me when you're not with your folks/ fellow med students, or email me when you're coming to town 😎

Most med schools are filled with couples. Just like first year in college though, there are a lot of relationship changes. But who cares, if you are in Houston and are a professional student you are money baby.

Is this the case everywhere or just texas (in your opinion)? I have noticed an inordinately high number of married people with children at a VERY young age since getting to this state (and I have lived in very poverty stricken areas of major cities, but texas.....dang).

i have a feeling TX and OK have this type of mentality...get married young...have children, etc...At least that is what I've seen happen to some of my friends...

I think it's the South in general. I've lived in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Georgia and thought the same thing. I have friends and relatives that live in the Northeast and Southwest that I've stayed with over summers and didn't see too much of the marry young and have kids early thing, but that's just my limited experiences.

This is something that my boyfriend has noticed as well. He is from Canada and up there people don't start settling down til late 20s/early 30s. He isn't for sure why there is this trend, but the South definitely marries young.

Eww...guess that means i should go back to nevada then. Nevada people tend to be hard drinking, chain-smoking multiple divorcees. And they're the bitterest people I've ever met. Now those are my kinda folks. 😎

Just kidding. I think I'll stay in Houston, depsite the fact that I'll be the only single one.

It is true in the midwest as well all the way up to the Canadian border... so I bet people in some parts of Canada get married early too. Also, how can one be a true hard drinking, chain-smoking, multiple divorcees unless you get started early.

You'll fit in great. Medical schools (and hospitals in general) are filled with very bitter people.

What is amazing is that those here with kids have done well enough in their classes and MCAT plus extra curriculars to get into a good medical school. I think that shows tenacity.

And a note on spouses: a good spouse can be a great asset to a student, they bring home money, they clean after you, they review with you, and support you.

From what I have heard there are still plenty of single hotties in every UH class. If you hook up with a med student, you'll both be poor (for a little while) and both will be too tired to clean, but what a great study buddy you'll have.

Anyway, it is early and I am not sure if I am making any sense.

did anyone see the seinfeld when Elaine is dating the doctor and he dumps her after passing step 3.

seriously, i wouldnt' sweat being single in med school. you can still have a lot of fun. And in the TMC being single you should be able to meet someone if you have any sort of people of skills.

I know a LOT of formerly single UTH students dating the dental students... in fact, the dental students are HOT, so don't worry too much about your chances in med school. 😉
