I have a quick question. When I was looking at places to stay in Houston all the places said that I would have my pick with which electricity provider I would want to be with. Where I currently live we only have one provider... so I'm not really sure what my options are. Does anyone have any suggestions on the cheapest company?

I am using reliant energy ... but from what i gather TXU, reliant ect.. they all seem to cost about the same.

What was with the completely useless david hasselhoff flyers? 😕 Shouldn't they be sending us useful information?

Did I miss something??? 😛

I wonder if I can get extra loan money for a Vespa 😕
If you can, make sure you ask for a little extra, so you can trick that puppy out. Toss on some streamers, a "girls kick ass" bumper sticker, and some neon lights for your wheel wells, and you'll be totally rockin' the vespa scene. Do they make spinnas for those things? That'd be tight

Useless, true, but HIlarious. When is welcome weekend again? I need to buy some sweatpants and a new beater soon so that I can look my best. Anyone know where I can find a good deal on some hightops?

AJ

Hey. I was thinking of buying a motorcycle or mo-ped of some kind. Does anybody know about how much it costs to park or where to park?

2 weeks!

I know this has been asked before, but does anyone have any idea when we will start hearing about financial aid?

I called the fin. aid office to check to see if they had all the paperwork I needed to properly grovel for money and was told that they will start processing paperwork to make sure that you've completed all of the necessary paperwork "in a few weeks." They are going to mail out paperwork letting you know what forms you are missing, if anything, after they review your papers. So what was the point again of sending all of this stuff in ASAP 😕

the sooner you get it in, the more likely you are to get scholarships, grants, etc...

I'd still like to know if I'm missing anything though. Here's the stuff I sent in:
1) FAFSA
2) UTH's institutional form for financial aid
3) that scholarship application form that came with the acceptance packet

Anyone have anything else?

I seem to recall them saying they would have the results for scholarships by April 15th

Same here......

yep yep me, too.

Anyone with major plans before school starts (i.e. Europe)?

Hey, does anyone know what the hell they're talking about with the three "personal references" on the financial aid form? Is it like people who can verify your FAFSA or what?

So now I've got a dilmena, one that I am stoked to have the chance to be in, but it's a tough call none the less. I found out that I got into UW today. I'm from the pacific northwest and want to head back, but the more I learn about UT-H and the more time I spend in Houston, the more I get sold on the idea of staying in these parts for the next five years. I guess that I'll be playing paper rock scissors with myself for the next few weeks to figure this one out. If anyone has any thoughts on making a decision, I'd love to hear 'em. Later people

I think that they're probably just character references so that they can verify who you are and make sure you're legit, though I doubt they rarely ever follow up with them. They probably want to have them on file just in case. Just my guess

Maybe they just want to know that you won't just take the money and run 😛 I just put down a couple of my friends. I doubt that they'll take the time to check them.

Bump, and congrats on your acceptance. Its cliche but you should pick the school that you feel will fit your needs the best. If your ultimate goal is to head back to the PNW than med school in Washington is probably your best bet. But if Texas has grown on you that much than I'm looking forward to seeing you this August.

In case it helps, David Hasselhoff seems to be popular at UTH.

Thanks man. It really comes down to whether accumulating all of the extra debt to go to UW is worth it. Considering my interests basically guarantee that I'm going to be one broke ass doc and the fact that UT-H is a kickass school with awesome resources, I'm leaning toward "no." It looks like it'll come down to how much it'll cost and how much I'm willing to pay to avoid Houston's summers and have a place where I can make snow turn yellow again. Maybe having the greatest actor of our time endorse UT-H will be the final determinant?

I would try to not let financial decisions influence where you want to go to med school. Beg borrow steal to get the opportunity you worked so hard to. You will likely earn a six figure salary and can easily pay off the loans, even if you have to take the whole 30 year repayment options.

UW is an elite medical school and has outstanding residency programs. Going there gives you a better shot at those residency programs.

Getting in is an honor. Unfortuanately, US News Ranking does give you a boost if you decide to apply to a competitive speciality. Don't rule out anything. Radiology is competitive now, but Internal Medicine was as competitive back on the 90's.

You can be very successful at UT-Houston. Education is probably the same.

Personally, I would go to UW over most medical school. It's is respected in both research and primary care.

Also, any possibility of you converting to in-state Washington? I'm sure you looked into that though.

Thanks for your input, mm. Chances are slim that I would be able to convert my residency, as they recently made the residency requirements much more stringent in the past two years. However, the school does offer waivers so that you can pay in-state tuition if you are rejected for WA residency. Problem is, the decision of the school to make those waivers available happens on a year to year basis, meaning that down the road I could get shafted and have to end up paying out of state tuition should the school decide to no longer offer the waiver.

You have a point when you say to avoid including financial issues when deciding where to go to med school, it's all about going where you'll have the best opportunities and be happiest. Problem is, between my undergrad debt and low compensation potential for my career focus, cost is definitely an issue, as much as I don't want it to be. Additionally, I don't see a whole lot of difference between UT-H and UW when I look at the potential to prepare for a career working with underserved pops. in a clinical and public health role. UT-H has a pretty sweet MD/MPH program, while UW has a damn good MD/MHA (m. health administration). UT-H actually pays for your MPH and provides you with a partial living cost stiped during your MPH year, which is pretty mellow. As much as I bag on Houston for the fact that it is as flat as the great plains, I definitely like it here and would be happy here. That said, the opportunity to be in school next year with some of my old high school buddies in one of my favorite cities in the world (Seattle) makes this a really hard decision. Hopefully it works out for the better

Good luck with your choice, but I think everyone would agree that we would love you to stay and be in our class🙂

Glad to hear there's another public health type out there! I'm finishing up my MPH now, assuming I get my thesis done 😳 Best of luck in your decision! It's not a bad prediciment to be in. I can't speak for UW, but there are plenty of public health opportunities in Texas. In fact, my thesis dataset was collected in Texas by CDC people.

who's going to welcome weekend?

FYI

we had a meeting today, and so far there are a little over 100 incomings signed up for welcome weekend. looks like it should be a good turnout. 👍

I am!

Maybe we should make t-shirts of our avatars so we can recognize each other 😀

You can add one more to your tally. My slackerness shines through, as I have yet to send in my welcome week sheet. I'll do it tomorrow, I promise :meanie:

Brain: MPH all the way, I'm looking forward to following in your footsteps

I'm pretty easily recognized. just look for the palest whiteboy, the one whose skin reflects sunlight, and you'll have found me.

Well thank ya, I'd love to call you all classmates

I'll be there...I'm tall and have bright red hair and always look either angry or depressed.

Cant' wait to see you guys! 🙂

Yeah, I know! You're lucky it doesn't snow in Houston, or nobody would be able to find you!

I too shall attend (and am also pretty damned reflective in my lack of pigmentation).

I'll be there. I have really long blonde hair, though it is normally put up.... 🙄

I'll be there too! I'm excited about it! I'll be the tall, pale girl with really long brown hair. 🙂

and I'll be the really pale, dirty blonde headed girl holed up somewhere studying for finals and the dreaded step 1.

woot!

Sounds like we'll have a pasty class! Personally, I make sheets of paper look tan 🙂 I'll be the girl with blonde, super curly hair to the point that it's borderline dreadlocks. Look forward to meeing you all!

Let me be the first non-pasty person to reply. I'll be there and probably one of the few Asian guys in the group. Just look for the guy who is always smiling because he has no idea whats going on. 😀

I'll wager that I have the reddest hair in our med school class.

P.S. Anyone want to get together Friday night? There is a GREAT Cuban place downtown.. a place with traditional cuban food and yummy mojitos.

Are you guys all going to UT-Houston for sure? Or deciding between it and other school(s)?

Well, considering that I only applied in Texas and the way the "Match" is set up, Houston is my only option....plus it was my top choice 😀 .....so, yes I'm most decided to go to Houston.
