Thanks for your input, mm. Chances are slim that I would be able to convert my residency, as they recently made the residency requirements much more stringent in the past two years. However, the school does offer waivers so that you can pay in-state tuition if you are rejected for WA residency. Problem is, the decision of the school to make those waivers available happens on a year to year basis, meaning that down the road I could get shafted and have to end up paying out of state tuition should the school decide to no longer offer the waiver.
You have a point when you say to avoid including financial issues when deciding where to go to med school, it's all about going where you'll have the best opportunities and be happiest. Problem is, between my undergrad debt and low compensation potential for my career focus, cost is definitely an issue, as much as I don't want it to be. Additionally, I don't see a whole lot of difference between UT-H and UW when I look at the potential to prepare for a career working with underserved pops. in a clinical and public health role. UT-H has a pretty sweet MD/MPH program, while UW has a damn good MD/MHA (m. health administration). UT-H actually pays for your MPH and provides you with a partial living cost stiped during your MPH year, which is pretty mellow. As much as I bag on Houston for the fact that it is as flat as the great plains, I definitely like it here and would be happy here. That said, the opportunity to be in school next year with some of my old high school buddies in one of my favorite cities in the world (Seattle) makes this a really hard decision. Hopefully it works out for the better
