I'm in GA right now and planning on coming down to Houston over spring break (around march 5th) but I dont think I'll be able to come in April. How important is this welcome weekend thing? Will we receive official info on it or is it unofficial? This may sound like a stupid question.
You can see the "official info" on the school webpage if you hit the link farther down in someone's post. It is not a required event, but it would be really nice to see you there!

Hey guys,
I've never done the financial aid thing before. Does anyone know when we get our money? I just want to start counting the days and until I can quit my job here and move to Houston.

I did a little research and found this website. Although it applies to the 2004-2005 school year, the dates for financial aid check release should give you some idea of when to expect the money.

I traveled through Europe last summer and was hoping to get my financial aid at least a little bit before school started to help with rent and whatnot. Unfortunately, they don't send out the money until they first day of classes...maybe a couple of days before at the earliest. Sorry 🙁

Welcome Weekend is really just an opportunity for you to get to meet your new classmates and to talk to the current students. I went last year and I would say about 75% of my class showed up, but you won't miss much by not attending...just a lot of drinking and socializing. You are getting more than enough info by reading this thread and keeping up with the website.

Thanks for posting this and thanks to everyone who responded. I guess it would be a good idea to try and start saving up some money for the move and to survive for the few weeks I'll be there before school starts. I was hoping for July but oh well.

Now that I see myself on the official roster, I am a lot less paranoid.

How many people are planning to live with a roomate or live alone?

Yea good pt. I know it depends on peoples preferences, but alone or roommate what do you guys think? Besides the year abroad i've been living alone for the past two years and I like it.

Is there something diff about med school that makes a rooming with someone the better option?

At this point, I'm planning on living alone...I too have been living alone for the past 3 years. I enjoy my freedom of 2 am study sessions around my apartment and not having to worry about waking up a roommate, but if my roommate was also in medical school, then I guess this wouldn't be a problem! 😛

I actually love living alone and have been the first two years. Sometimes you just really, really, really need to get away and my apartment is that place. I love being able to go home and leave the stress of school at school. When you're around classmates, you tend to talk about school and what's stressing you out (I have one friend who I can call for this when I need it.) But I'm also one of those people who need my regular alone time to recharge and had lived alone when working before school. Don't worry about living with someone to meet people, there are tons of social activies planned the first several weeks of school.

When its test time you need the least amount of distractions possible. If my place starts getting messy, I don't have to worry about it bothering someone else and I don't have to come home and be pissed off about the roommate who refuses to take the trash out and instead lets it spill all over the floor. Kind of see what I'm saying?

That being said, I'm considering a roommate for MS3 since I'll rarely be home anyways and I have a diabetic cat that needs his insulin 2x a day. But I probably won't do it without lots of thought.

I'm planning on living alone just because I've never done it before...I've actually always really enjoyed having roomates and had some of the best ones, but just want to see what living by myself is like for a year.

But as far as studying...does anyone know what the hours are for the study areas? (LRC?) I know where I go to college we've got places that are open 24/7. Is there even parking for us to come back to school to study late at night? thanks!

The LRC/school is open 24/7. You get a ID badge to wear everywhere that buzzes you in. The library for the TMC is open till midnight during the week I think.

Parking after 5pm and on the weekends for $30/semester. (f-ers are building a new building where we used to get nights and weekends free, *sigh* good for the school I guess)

😡 I only got to use that once before they closed it off 😡

Do any of you who already go to UT-Houston know how many people usually get in off of their waitlist?

I don't think it is very many.

MS2 tip of the day - make sure you have a good printer and use it well before test time so you don't spend precious time printing crap 😡

I know this is totally irrelevant to what we are talking about right now, but I recall someone asking if texas medical schools are going to have rolling admissions in the future. I just got back from the UT-SW conference (to hang out with friends) and a representative did say that that is a possibility. The schools are meeting in March (something like that) to decide.

OR.....have a backup printer, either yours or someone that has no life (ie is always home) and lives close. If you invest in that fancy new printer cause its cool, it might not be a bad idea to toss that old one in a closet for just that scenario.
😉

lol, I just always wait till the end to print out old tests, power point lectures for classes we don't get a syllabus in(counting download time too so you can print more slides per page), etc and always waste too many hours.

the $100 HP I bought right before school that copies, scans, and prints has served me well but damn I wish I had a color laser jet.

Man~ is it true we can't use macs next year? I'm such a mac head (nerdy I know).

Also I keep hearing about tablet PC's. Are these things worth it at UTH? I hear both sides. One side says you can download and write on power points while the other side says that the only thing tablet pc's are good for are conversation starters with girls (or boys). Any thoughts?

you write on your big syllabus during lecture you purchase at the beginning of each block.

maybe the wireless doesn't work with macs?? I don't know, you shouldn't need a computer in school at all unless they maybe make it required for neuro lab now (they were testing the CD when I took the class). you can just use the computers in the computer lab for that if that is the case. who knows, maybe the first years use wireless more since a course or two has their syllabus on the internet, but that isn't true for 2nd year. we have one course where our syllbabus is the power points we download, the rest we buy from printing services.

probably better to wait and see what things are like here before buying anything. no need to have a pda the first two years except for maybe keeping your schedule in it. wait till third year and then get one then, but many still don't use them then either.

back to studying, its test time. 🙁

There are at least 2 or more people in my class that have macs and I know that they work with the wireless at school. As of right now, there is not VPN support for Mac OS X or Linux, but they should have that up and running by the time you get here. I'm not sure about the neuro lab stuff, but I'm pretty sure it works on Macs. You shouldn't have too many issues with using a Mac...I secretely wish that I had gotten a powerbook instead of my Sager.

As for the tablet PC idea...It would be very cool to look at, but not very practical. I'd stick with a regular notbook and just use the old pen and paper syllabus for class. To be totally honest, I rarely use my notebook in class for anything other than diverting myself from the lecture.

bump... Good morning everyone!

Good morning 🙂 . Thanks guys for the computer info.

I have a question for any current students at UTH. How much money is allotted for living expenses in the financial aid budget??

Thanks,
Emily

Anybody know??

Patience!!!! lol, we have tests next week so we're all pretty much MIA right now.

I didn't apply for FA last year but first year the allotment was 8 or 9K subsidized and 18K unsubsidized (to cover 10 months of school.) 3rd and 4th year you get a bit more because they provide you with enough for 12 months.

Good luck with your tests, seabass!

Do you know if that was the federal allotment, or just UTH's?

Yeah, that's why I stopped bringing my laptop to classes in undergrad.

But lectures were so easy to stay focused on 😉 It's really too bad you and I won't be at the same school anymore

Wommon! Where have you run off to!?

I had a sneaking suspicion you would be on these forums, nice to know my paranoia is never wrong. 😉

Yeah, it's a bummer. But I drove back and forth from G-town just yesterday, and we both know there are reasons I'll be in Houston... :meanie: ... so we'll definitely be seeing each other (well, except during finals time, when yer studying for 12 tests while I'm only studying for one :meanie: ) 😍

I would imagine it is the same for all schools.

We love you Peter 😍 You've been very helpful in answering our questions.

Best of luck on all exams, whenever they are.

Does anyone know if it is beneficial to include your parent's information on FAFSA if you're going to UTH? Will there be stuff that i miss out on if I don't put my parent's info?
The dilemma is that if i put my parent's info that will take a longer time since they don't know what to expect on their taxes, but if i don't then i can finish it right now.
If anyone can help me out i'd appreciate it.

Well I know that on the web site it says you have to provide parental information if you are applying for disadvantaged student loans. But other than that I'm not sure if you need it or not. From the schools I've interviewed at, the general consensus is that you have to provide parental information to be eligible for need-based aid.

Anyone know when we will receive our financial aid information for 1st year??

I've heard we can go help out at LBJ on the very first day if we want to. I can't wait to get started.

Anyone have any cool summer plans? I am going to have NOTHING to do from June 30th to August 8th... nothing.. I can't remember the last time I had nothing I had to do.

That's pretty sweet.....I would love some free time again.....unfortunately I will unromantically be working for The Man until school starts......good times

I too will be working till a week or so before school starts... the idea of having a full months paycheck to live on in August has enticed me too much to quit early.

I hear ya.....for me, the rent still being due on the first of august necessitates my continued employ.....

I am not liking this already. Facebook demanded a "school e-mail". I graduated last May and I remember my e-mail address, but I forgot how to access it. Guess I wont be looking at everyone's pretty faces. 🙁

Can you join that group if you are at a different school, and if so, how does one do it? My computer skillz, unlike my bow staff and nunchuck skillz, are severely lacking.

AJ

Thought of the day: On the topic of computer illiteracy, why the hell is a mouse called a mouse if the stupid thing doesn't even look like a mouse? CS kids, particularly those who named these silly things, have severe creativity issues
