Congratualtions cnoevil. I scored a 28 (9,9,10 in biology) on the April exam.

I got a 28 on the April test as well, but with very unbalance subscores. For a number of reasons I decided not to take it again in August, though I'm beginning to regret my decision.

Thats a good, balanced score....
In fact, I think each stat is right on par with the average matriculant stats on their website.

If things don't work out in this cycle, I will be taking again. I did the CBT and I liked the format. I wouldn't have made it through the writing sample if I had to hand write my essays.

Yeah, I'm average for all of the stats for UT memphis. I'm 24, GPA of 3.58 and MCAT of 28.

Sunflower, what area was your weak point? Mine was verbal, I don't know how I got a 9 but I'll take it. I was hovering around 7-10 range on my practice tests.

33P here (13VR, 10PS, 10BS) and 3.94/3.88 BCPM. I think I have a good shot at UT-Mem with those stats, I just need to impress in the interview 🙂

Haha, lets just say my strong point was verbal... 13 there. (I'd been making around 11-12 on practice tests, so i was pleased) And, well, the rest of the test was my weak point 😉 I did quite a bit worse on both science sections than I'd done on my practice tests, unfortunately.

looks good enough for vandy if you are an alumni....

forget that, vandy hates nepotism.

(edit: this was per dean heldermann (sp) last year in my 'rejection interview' -- blech... if anyone here interviews with him, i pray for your soul. 😉 )

lol, when I first read your post I thought you were saying you're MCAT was a 24.

I certainly hope so! Definitely my top choice in-state, at least never having visited any other schools.
I think I'll bite the bullet and call Vandy tomorrow. I've heard that they do a secondary/interview combo, and if this is true then getting a secondary would be the equivalent of getting an interview at other schools. Still, I'd like to know what's going on with my application >)!

Correct -- you only get a secondary if you've been invited to interview. :luck:

does anyone know if the adcom met today?....and if so by what time did ppl usually get decisions in the past??...

I don't know for sure if they met today, but I know they typically meet on Fridays after lunch.... so I'm not sure if decisions and such are acutally sent the same Friday or the next week.

Nope, still waiting, unfortunately... It would be rather cruel to reject me pre-interview after telling me to my face that essentially everyone who gets a secondary gets an interview. I'm hopeful, but trying not to be too overconfidant!

haha, I'm too scared to call places! There are so many that have been absolutely silent, but I'm afriad I won't like what I hear... And yeah, I definitly hope all this information pans out! I think it all came directly from the admissions office, so I'd say we've got a pretty good shot! 🙂 How long have you been complete?

well they acknowledged my app on Sept 18, but I never asked when I was complete with recs...im guessing at the most a few days to a week later...how about you?

did either of you get an email saying your secondary was complete.. and if so how long did that take after the secondary acknowledgement?

I just got an email saying that they needed my recs two days later...but i know for a fact that my school had sent them...i never got a complete email

you mean the pre-professional evaluation?

You know, I guess I never really thought about that. The whole thing was a bit stressful, as my snail mailed stuff apparently got lost for a few days (took over a week to get like 3 hours down the road) so I called on my due date to make sure everything was there, and I think the woman phrased it that they had everything and I was "complete." My recs were delivered electronically through interfolio about a week before that, so maybe I was totally complete. Other than that, though, I never got any kind of email other than the secondary acknowledgement. That was a really rambley answer to a simple question. 🙂

yeah i was thinking that we should be ok as long as that is in...i am wondering if they only mark you as complete when all of your recommendation letters are in.

yeah i think that u will be okay....and that u will be complete once they get the letters....i dont think they are accustomed of ppl asking whether everything is in...i guess the majority doesnt think abt asking...so they dont let u now..tn after all...that's just an opinion of mine

lol, i know, everyone at my school thinks i'm insane. they're probably right. i'm heading out for the evening as well... have a good one!

I haven't called any schools yet. I really don't believe there's anything to this whole "make sure they know you're interested" thing. I'm sure there are some schools out there that keep a record of how many times you call, but come on, it's not like schools are actually loosing our applications. They will be processed in whatever order they've already decided upon, it's not like a call will really do anything to that. If we weren't interested we wouldn't have applied.

With all this talk of UT, is anyone interested in going to ETSU? This is my second time applying and I could care less where I go. My first choice is memphis but if I have to go to ETSU, I wouldn't lose any sleep. Is anyone applying to any osteopathic schools?

I just visited ETSU for the first time this year. I must say I was VERY impressed. The number one thing I disliked about UT was it's horrible inner-city location. In comparison ETSU was a paradise. If I'm lucky enough to be accepted at both, it would be a difficult decision. I know I would enjoy my time at ETSU more, but if you're going for a competitive specialty I think UT would be a bigger advantage.

The location of UT is also it's strong point to me b/c you get exposure to so many different types of patients. I don't think ETSU can hold a candle to UT in terms of clinical experience if you want to go into subspecialties. I think ETSU is a nicer location and the first two years at ETSU is better cause their coursework is better than UT. I've heard from different doctors that you learn how to be a doctor on the job so that's important to me. If I went to ETSU, I would return to Memphis for some of my rotations.

the same reasons that make memphis a 'crappy place to live' (actually, its really not that bad) make it an awesome place to go to medical school. your hands-on experience is second to none. last year, i turned down several oos private schools (ie wake forest) for ut b/c of the clinical opportunities here. think about it... in a big private hospital you're not going to get anywhere near the patients. whereas at places like ut, you are an integral part of their care. you will be placing central lines, doing lps, and chest tubes way before (and more often) than your counterparts. The trauma center is one of the top 5 busiest in the nation (w/ jackson memorial in miami, dallas, lac, etc) Think of the lack of pathology also; at my etsu interview last year, we were looking at their nicu and i asked what they did with tga (transposition of the great arteries) newborns... My tour guide smiled and said they send them west to VU or UT. Also, ETSU has a 90% WASP pt population and diseases present differently across racial and gender categories.

UT's hospital consortium is truly something to behold. We get a great balance between public and private hospitals. We rotate at the Med, the VA, Methodist, Le Bonheur/St Jude, St. Francis, Baptist East ( state of the art hospital in germantown), not to mention opportunities at UT-Knoxville, Erlanger and Baptist in Nashville.

Research as well. UT is rapidly expanding their research opportunities with the creation of the new UT-Baptist research park and UT Cancer institute. There are tons of opportunities for research at St. Jude as well.

Residency programs. UT's surgery programs are top-notch (general is strong; ortho at the campbell clinic-- one of the best in the country; semmes-murphy neuroscience institute, also very strong; 2 affiliated radiology programs...)

Don't get me wrong, I loved ETSU as well. For a while, I wished that I could spend my first two years in Johnson City and my last two in Memphis... The admissions faculty at qcom were among the friendliest I ever met. It is a beautiful place, and a great school (especially for primary care) but at the end of the day, the variety of clinical and research opportunites at UT made the decision easy.

[lots of stuff]
Thanks for the perspective, and I completely agree. I realize I wouldn't be stuck in primary care at ETSU, but then again going there is making somewhat of a commitment to it. The truth is I'm just not ready to decide. I'd never rule out PC, but without experience in several fields I really can't make that kind of decision. In the end I probably would choose UT over ETSU, if for no other reason then the name and the clinical experiences. If, however, ETSU is the only place I'm accepted I wouldn't hold off another year just to avoid it.

Let me ask you another question. During my interview day, the ETSU M1's talked about getting some clinical experience even at the M1, M2 level. They were participating in giving school physicals, involved with clinic patients, etc. Does UT do anything like this in these early years? It's not like you can do much as an M1 or M2, but I think jumping right into it and being reminded of your goal when all you can see is the next anatomy test is a huge encouragement to new medical students.

I am a student at UT Memphis. I just got off trauma at the MED. I saw a couple gunshot wounds, a stabbing all kinds of lacerations, broken bones, you name it. All of this was all tonight!! The best part is that they see so much of all this stuff UT students get to scrub in, cut, stitch up, set bones on every one of these cases. Spend one night on surgery call at the MED and I guarentee you, you will get to see and DO more than you would in a week at ETSU, or most other med schools for that matter.

You will get to do procedures at UT that students at many med schools won't get to do until their residency. I know from the private hospitals where I have worked that when you train at the nice private hospitals (Vandy, Methodist, etc) you don't get to do nearly as much because you are too low on the totem pole. At Methodist, they routinely call in plastics attendings for simple face lacerations. At UTs hospitals like the med, you will be the one getting to do these procedures. It is unfortunate all the patients in the inner city can't get plastics consults, but that's just the way healthcare currently functions in our country. This training atmosphere is why UT routinely sends students in to every different specialty at competitive residencies throughout the country.

well that's nice and all....

but what about the malignant preclinical years that everyone bitches about.

I talked to my interviewers about it, and they skirted around the issue...

What exactly do you mean by malignant preclinical years? What they told me was that they do better than average on the USMILE step 1, but a little less than average on the step 2. Can anyone confirm this?

In the first year, we have a block schedule where we have 4 weeks of class, 1 week of exams, and 1 week of PCC/DRS. The DRS portion of this week is spent learning to do H&Ps, medical interviews, and a couple of sessions at your preceptor where you practice your clinical skills etc. I agree that this is very important to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We also have a student-run clinic geared towards inner-city hispanic population; la clinica esperanza is pretty much run by our medical students. In addition, we have a student-run suture tech program, where 4 students from each class rotate shifts at the med's trauma center and get paid pretty well.

With regard to the 'malignant' preclinical years, I'm not sure how UT actually compares to other schools (as I've never gone to another one), but so far I don't find it to be malignant. We are in class a lot the first three blocks b/c of anatomy, but that is toned down after december. We have a notes system that works well and we are working on instituting a podcast system to stream our lectures (right now it is an AV equipment issue). So if your not a class-person, those resources would suffice. Medical school is no walk in the park, especially if you care about getting good grades and a high step 1 score... A P/F system would certainly be less stressful, but most P/F systems are actually ranked anyways, and therefore ending being competitive in the end (WashU's first year being an exception that I can think of at the time). Did you have any specific questions?

i was told the exact opposite. scores were a little below the avg for STEP 1 and above average for STEP 2.

thats what I've been told by practically everyone that goes to ut-mem that has been actually candid with me.

Here is the deal with board scores:
In the past, UT scored just below or at the national average (around 214 when the average was 215) and then scored significantly above average on step II.
They have since changed the curriculum which has done wonders for students' performance on the boards. Now instead of being about average on Step one, the average has incresed to 221. This is better than a lot of well known schools, including the University of Chicago (217) and Temple University School of Medicine (215)

Step II scores have increased further above the national average as well.
