hey all,
i don't know if anyone has posted anything about how your 1st year at utmb will be like....so here goes....
if you are invited to go to the pre-matriculation program go b/c it is a great experience!!
go to quest weekend....which is b4 orientation
GAR (gross anatomy and radiology) is great ....it is just 8 weeks long as opposed to much longer at other schools
All courses are usually 8 weeks long and intergrated...except NHB (neuro and behav. health) which i am in now and we have a killer exam this monday 🙁
you will be tested approx. every 4 weeks....
you will not have a spring break like everyone else...probably bc classes are half day and NHB is 9 weeks...but classes end roughly at the end of april and you will get a one week break after your first 2nd year class (CVP-cadio and pulmonary ...dont you love the acronyms) so your spring break is in the fall of 2nd year....and of course you get 8 weeks off b/ 1-2nd year use it wisely (do research, precep, or just sleep or travel or something)....anyway i'm tired goodnite...and oh yeah 1st year classes are in the A.M.( which suck for me b/c i'm not a morning person) and 2nd year classes are in the P.M....

yah UTMB for the last couple of years has done pretty well on USMLE. the average has been 221 or so, while the national average is about 214.

I dont know how much of that attributes to the PBL, I would personally attribute it to the emphasis that Dr. Thomas, our Dean, places on its importance like on the first day 🙂 I think the school also pays for 3months of Kaplan QBank. Plus the fact that many second years start studying for the board in January.

I was surprised by how many matched into plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, and other highly competitive fields.

For those of you who don't know me (and I think that's all of you), I LOVE cats. I seriously considered becoming a small animal vet become of my love for the furry critters...but..something changed my mind, and I've decided to work with people instead. Don't ask me what changed it, because I don't really know (and I'm not going to give you my med school interview spiel as to why I want to become a doctor because I have a feeling it's the same b.s. that everybody else says).

I <3 cats. 😍

....and I like people, too, I guess. 😛

I don't know if it's for everyone, but it works for me: I'm just a plain idealist who thinks that medicine should be used for the benefit of others (humanity/ society/ politics/ etc). One thing that influences me that is the fact that I've had some pretty unique family experiences (my mom brought me with her when she did legal work for inpoverished immigrants, my dad let me do chemistry in his lab - when I was 6- , and my relatives had the the whole gamut of immunological/ psychiatric problems).

In addition, one of my major adolescent influences (and the nicest man I've ever met) was on MEDICAID with AIDS, and yet he still smiled when supercilious resident docs would turn their nose at him. I'm riding in an AIDS ride in his memory next month.

Of course, I NEVER brought up the *negatives* of medicine/ doctors in my Personal Statement. 😉

But hey, there is a place for everyone in medicine, even the idealists. I'll probably be taking all the MEDICAID/MEDICARE patients (if there is anything left, after Congress tries to be two-faced and cries "right to life" over the Schiavo case, while cutting funding from the program that helps her survive), so that others can specialize in "Diseases of the Rich." 😎

/ dunno if that was a "good" reason. 🙂

The last letter I got was the invitation to do the prematriculation...and well today I got an e-mail from them asking for my parents' income tax for verification purposes. So far, none of the people who got into UTMB from my school heard anything either... I dunno...should I be worried?

The only thing I'd grumble about so far is that it seems like we should get a notice about our Hep B shots/ other immunizations. I know all incoming med students are required to at least START their 3 shots. You need at least 2 months between each one, so if you have access to cheap/ free immunization shots you should definitely start NOW. Most universities/ medical businesses offer the Hep B shots free or prorated. It's ~$30 a shot at UTMB's clinic (I personally prefer free 🙂 ).

For Doobie and GG, etc: Your ID is your SSN, your default PIN is your YYMM of birth.

It seems like UTMB sent financial aid applicants info on e-connent first (since it needs to be turned in early). I'm not certain if the site is ready for other new students, but I looked around the site just in case (and that's how I found out they had not received my transcript yet).

I'm interested in renting condos close to campus...but according to several realtors I've contacted, most of them have already been rented out. This is actually the 2nd time I'm going to Galveston to go look at apts...and I didn't find anything then...do you have any recommendations as far as housing is concerned?

I saw both Villa Marina and Casa Caribe when I was there last time. Villa Marina looks nice...utilities are all paid for so that was a good thing. I didn't really check out Casa Caribe...it looked very institutionalized from the outside which was a big turnoff. I'm going to be in Galveston from Friday/Saturday...I'll keep my fingers cross and hope to find something b/c clock is ticking and I have to move in by May :-(
