does anyone know what the consequences are of letting the priority deadline go by before i submit fafsa? what does "priority" get me? i mean, isn't everyone pretty much getting loans? or is there grant money that i'd want "priority" for?

And YES the verification forms...did you get them too daysleeprx?
I feel it will slow down our financial aid...sucks.

That and I am so sick of forms :barf:

Um...it's like two signatures and a tax return, it's not that bad.

I know that many of ya'll are visiting your future island home these next few weeks to check out possible places that are safe and close to school. But, if any of ya'll come in two weekends looking for a place, you can also have a chance to hang with current med students on a Friday night. TKY will be hosting its annual theme party (for those who want to know the theme, it's "White Trash Trailer Bash") in two Fridays. So, you can come down on Friday, look around, and then come by the TKY mansion for a night of boot-scootin' in the boonies revelry. It's a terrific way to talk to med students over many beers when they're not stressed about neurobio for MS1s, Step 1 for MS2s, ward rotations for MS3s, and relaxing after getting a residency for MS4s. The invite's open...

It's all "first come, first serve," but that doesn't mean there's nothing left. I know ppl who applied late (last September) and still received their aid.

hey....is everyone going to be living alone? If you want a roomie...how do you go about doing that? I'm pretty sure that I don't want to live alone...so anyone know anyone that might be needing someone to live with? Also, I am going to be doing the whole prep thing so I should be there over the summer, so I'm not quite sure what to do about the living arrangements for that. I should be going to visit apts the 8th and 9th and maybe the 10th...so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that I'll find out about roommates and stuff by then.....Oh...and HI!...I'm new! 😀

if you are lucky, there will be grant money (like TPEG), as well as need-based institutional scholarship, and maybe even scholarship for URM, if you qualify. I dont know what percentage of students get what, but i'm sure it ranges from getting almost full-ride, to taking out loans by the boatload. (thanksfully Texas schools are cheap)

Is it first come first serve? that, I do not know. They have a funky way of doing business. My financial award letter was changed like 3-4 times during this school year. Sometimes they decide you qualify for something in the middle of the year, and they'll send you another email.

i know it's a lot of paper work, but dont put things off, get it all in. most of the stuff probably arent crucial, the only thing they must have before you can officially matriculate is your final transcript.

Hey Rachelle...welcome.
I actually feel the same way. My perfect arrangement would be a nice two-bedroom split with a rommie. I thought about getting a studio but I don't really need a kitchen, living room, etc all to myself. It would be much more fun, and somewhat cheaper to split it.
So I am actually really interested in any ideas on finding a roommate.

Warning: I do have a cat, he is adorable and friendly...but also fat and furry...

Me and Rachelle02 started a roomie search for UTMB...spread the word before it plummets...

I've had friends sending out feeders for Galveston apartments, and the info I found out lowered my fears about finding a decent place. I know a lot of ppl have already gotten on the waitlist for Villa Marina and other complexes, but there are numerous opportunities.

Do a google search for "Galveston Real Estate" or realtor or something. There are a number of services that have online listings and agents available to show you around.

Geez, I forget to read SDN for a few days and I have to roll through about six pages of posts.

From what I've gathered so far, most of you people are crazy. And I don't mean normal med school student crazy, more like "Hi! I'm stalking you!" type crazy. I like it. What I think would be more fun if there were hypochondriac students though.

Yes... this is a senoritis post.

I've got a great 2 bedroom/2.5 bath condo for rent near campus. If anyone's interested, check my post on page 17 of this thread.

The problem is that since today is April Fools... I'm not sure to believe one or the other. Or maybe I shouldn't believe you both. Or maybe you two really are truthful and you know that today is April Fools and thus are trying to confuse me.

Or maybe I need to sleep more. Decisions decisions.

It sounds like you need to ask yourself one question - "Do I feel lucky?" Well, DO YA, PUNK?

Well, we've all got a little bit of hypochondriac in us: last week I was thinking I might have MS, then I realized that my face was tingly cuz I needed a haircut. ;-P

However, if all else fails, I'd pick the "trying to confuse you" answer.

Future UTMB students (like me 🙂 ),

This might be a personal question (since it involves money), but what loan amount are you going to accept?

Current UTMB students,

I'd especially like to know how much current UTMB students take out in loans, and what you suggest for people who are going to be financing their medical education through mostly loans. Also, about how much would you say you spend per month (including everything - rent, tuition, bills, car stuff, food, school supplies)? For our first year, should we accept more than we think we might need, and then decrease the amount in later years if it turns out to be too much?

Hey, I went to galveston this weekend. I found out some interesting stuff:

Casa Caribe's waiting list is full. They aren't taking anymore names for june-august. So no good for us...

Carlton Courtyard is pretty close to campus, gated, looks nicer than alot of the places around there. They are still taking names for their list, but you have to submit an application and pay the $35 fee. They have 1/1 in two styles ($436 is 520 sqft)/($501 is 600 sqft), a 1/1 townhouse ($516 is 693 sqft), a 2/2 ($615 is 880 sqft), and a 2/2 townhouse ($700 is 1040 sqft). Except for the townhouses, the other prices can go down $10 if you choose a 2nd floor or $20 less if you choose a 3rd floor....the prices shown are for 1st floors(the most expensive floor)....there are 2 swimming pools, 4 laundry facilities, video library...the prices are w/ the UTMB discount. $100 deposit.
(409-762-2688)

Others that were recommended were Marina Landing Resort, Villa Marina, and Chateau Lafitte. They didn't have anything to show at the time though so I didn't see them. I think it is Villa Marina that has a virtual tour...you can call them for the website and also to get on the waiting list for free (409-762-3697).

All of these places were near the school and near the field house. All within walking distance I'm pretty sure. The beach is about 2-3 blocks away from all of these locations as well!

Anyways, let me know if you have any other questions.

Stephen

good question. here's my take.

Bottomline: don't be afraid to accept more loan than you think you will need, because at the end of the year, whatever money you have left over, you could just 'pay it back' right away.

For tuition, it's split into 4 installments per year (each being about $2,300) you could sign up for automatic installment/payment, or whatever, and the school will automatically deduct the tuition with your loan money and write you a check for the remainder amount.

For school supplies, the major thing is books. There are 'required' books for courses (talk to upperclassmen about which ones are actually 'required'), suggested books, and also review books that some may find useful to buy early on and use during the course (that way you'll be ahead when it comes to reviewing for boards), depending on your learning style or gunner-ness, this will vary. for the first year, i think i was spending something like $200-500 per course. (sometimes my books from college are the required books, or acceptable substitutes, and so i didn't bother buying some books) so dont be too quick to sell your college bio-related textbooks just yet.

the other major portion of school supplies is, for POM, we need to buy stethoscope(Littman Cardiology III is the recommended, which costs some like $125, you will need this for your POM clinical site visits, so you probably should invest in one) and ophthalmoscope (not everyone bought this, i debated long and hard whether to get this, in retrospect, it was probably not that necessary, and it's a hefty $350-$450+). There will be a sale in the bookstore in the fall, so dont get it yet.

i can't think of any other major school supplies cost, besides highlighters 🙂

oh, some people decide to invest in a laptop, which they could bring to class or PBL room. The classrooms are fitted with wireless internet, so get a laptop with wireless, so you could surf the net when the lectures get boring (jk), and although i dont see the need, i've seen those new nifty laptops that you can flip the screen 180* around and fold and write on the screen like a notepad. (but my pencil and paper cost a lot less)

rent/car stuff/food/bills will vary according to lifestyle, so i can't help you there. some of the cheaper ways to live are frats and UTMB droms. frat housing will provide you with meals for ~$300/month, UTMB dorms/apartment ~300/month, but no meals. If you look for your own condo/apartment, it'll be $500-600/month. if you cook, that'll probably be cheaper than eating out all the time.

(i've moved the bottomline to the top, in case nobody is interested in reading so much rambling)

i hope some of this helped.

Medstudent123,

Thanks so much for responding to my questions. I hadn't even thought about all the school costs (stethoscope, that optha-somethin somethin you mentioned) so I think I will accept most of the loan amount.

Btw, what did you mean when you said: "For tuition, it's split into 4 installments per year (each being about $2,300) you could sign up for automatic installment/payment, or whatever, and the school will automatically deduct the tuition with your loan money and write you a check for the remainder amount."

I have another question for you (or anybody else that knows the answer):

I didn't request the loan designated for a new computer. Is that a one-time offer given only to entering students, or may we request that loan at any time? My laptop probably has another year to go (hopefully) so I don't need a new computer just yet.

sorry i was confusing.

what i was trying to say is, your finaid money will not all come at once, they are distributed in one or two distributions. (for example, FDSL and most other money are distributed twice a year, once in august, and once in january) so in august, UTMB gets the money from the government in your name, and if you signed up for automatic payment, (say you borrowed $20,000, then half that amount, $10,000, arrives in august) UTMB will auto deduct the first semester tuition (~$4700). that leaves you ($10,000 - 4,700 = $5,300) $5,300. You will get a check in the mail for that amount. You take that, deposit it in your bank, and hope that you survive on that amount until january 🙂 (some forms of finaid have weird distribution dates, like march 11th, what the heck? in those cases, if you arent owing any tuition, they'll just mail that check to you)

i hope that cleared thigns up. PM me if you have other questions.

for the computer loan, you are allowed $3000 for all four years, and you can request that any year. it's probably not necessary. if you are concerned/want to make sure you get the maximum amount of finaid, then for 'monthly living cost' pick the highest one. and you could always reject portions of the finaid offer later. (in my opinion, it's way more than enough)

you will get an email saying log into e-connect, and you get the option of 'accept' the offer as it is, or 'decline' and manually change the $amount. in my experience, they've always offered as much 'good money' (grants, scholarhips) as they can, followed by the maximum FDSL $8500, and then, the rest in FDUSL.

Thanks for all the helpful finaid advice, medstudent123!

I was wondering if UTMB offered the "good" money now, with the federal loan offer, or later?

Thanks!

PS - I'll see y'all in a week, I'm going to OR ... & I even get to be the first to meet arierty! 😛

bon voyage, foto...you'll be missed.

So is everyone pretty much gonna live alone in a 1 bedroom? Or are there people who are planning on having roommates?

for those who are going to be taking out loan money, you should take into account these things per month: rent ($300-700 depending upon where you live and whether you'll have roommates); utilities like electricity, water, internet, cable; any type of payments such as car payments, insurance, the nice boat you bought two years ago; food ($100-200 depending upon how much you eat out or eat at home); entertainment (shopping, movies, alcohol, miscellaneous stuff to fill up your time). I took out enough loans to make due with ~$1100 a month including the summer months which normally isn't funded unless asked for, which I found out is a TON of money. That means that I'll be taking out much less next year. It all depends upon how you want to live as a student: you can go buy all IKEA furniture and go shop till you drop at Baybrook mall or the Galleria or live a bit more frugally and be more restrictive with how you spend your dollars. So, if you think that you'll be able to pay off all the loans with interest later on with no problems, then take out as much as you want. That's what my friend did, and he's just buying stuff left and right since he figures that he'll pay it back later on.

As for books, I would try to find any upperclassmen who is selling their used textbooks, but at the same time, try to buy them if they're still using the same edition. Medstudent123 is correct in saying that it'll cost around $200-500 a module for books, depending upon how many books you'll want to get by with. For the first module, I bought the Essential Clinical Anatomy (must have), Netter's Anatomy Guide, BRS Gross Anatomy (excellent for summing up stuff or just straight studying), and this illustrated gross anatomy guide that was somewhat useful. Netter's was free with AMSA (American Medical Student Association -- the more liberal med student org compared to AMA), so I spent less than $200 for books then. Don't sweat about buying books until you get to med school, which is 4 months away. Also, at the end of the year, you'll be able to receive 20% of your book purchases back from the UTMB bookstore. I'm not exactly sure why they do this, but I believe that they're a tax-exempt business, so they're returning back profits. I'm probably wrong on that notion, but you do get 20% back. When you calculate the costs out and compare it to buying books online, it's often the same price without the wait for shipping.

Random Q: How are your allergies in Galveston? I have terrible allergies in Austin (I take Allegra or Clarinex - they help a little but I still sneeze all the time). Do your allergies go away in Galveston? I figure there's not as much cedar, pollen, etc. by the beach.

Anyone know how UTMB ranked in US News? Not that it matters, just curious. (Not curious enough to drop money to find out how one school ranks.) So anyone know?

that i dont know about... sorry. they should come all at once. (but they might find during the middle of the year that they have even more good money, but i would not always count on it)

but they can't determine if you are eligible for grants or need-based scholarship until you turn in the dependent verification form and your parents' tax return. so if you haven't done that and got a crappy offer, dont get too worried yet.

i actually found that galveston's air to be more allergen-free, compared to houston. hopefully it'll be better for you too.

For those of you who live in Galveston or who have looked at apartments, besides Carelton Courtyard, Villa Marina, Casa Caribe, are there other apartments near the school that you would recommend looking at?

Hey guys*~

I was curious if anyone knows how to confirm if UTMB has received your transcript via E-Connect. I checked under ADMISSIONS - APPLICATION STATUS and under it, it says "U of TX-Pan American 2001/09 - 2005/05 Transcript is Incomplete or Coursework is In Progress" .... maybe I'm just being paranoid, but does this mean they've already gotten my transcript up to this point or just have not gotten any transcripts period? I know we were supposed to send it in by mid March and another one after we graduate...but my school admission office is sometimes not very competent...so I just want to make sure?

Thanks.

I went to Galveston this past weekend..and well, most of the apts I saw close to campus either have a long waiting list or look kinda sketchy...esp that Villa Marina, which I heard has a really bad reputation.

I'd definately recommend going around the residential area close to campus...I actually found a nice 2 bedroom apartment (relatively new) on 10th...about 2 blocks-walking distance from campus for $750. I saw several others in that area...you just need to drive around and see what's available.

There was also some condos for rent on Post Office (close to Casa Caribe, in front of Carelton Courtyards) that I was looking into. They're pretty cheap...about $700-800 for a 2 bedroom with all utilities paid for. My roommate and I were actually thinking of getting it, but we found the other one and liked it better though these condos are very nice also.

Hope these helps!

I believe that it means they've gotten your transcripts but haven't received the final one after you graduate. They would have notified you probably if they hadn't received them. 🙂

NOTE: Incomplete or In Progress Statuses used to denote:
* 1) You are enrolled for the current or a future term and we have not received your final official transcript, or
* 2) We have not received a final official transcript with your final grades and/or degree posted.

I have a question does your scholarship award offer show up on the financial aid info. or do I just ignore that for now? It is kind of intimidating looking at those numbers without it!
