I'll be there on the 1st!! Then I'll have absolutely nothing to do for the next three weeks until orientation starts. How fun!! Anyone going to the AMWA Welcome Weekend?

Hey cool...I live on Ferry too.

I'll be there for Welcome Weekend and QUEST. Anyone see a schedule for orientation?

where you living? i'm at harbor east.

i havent heard anything about orientation, the only mailings i've gotten in july is the reverence book they sent out and the luncheon thing for spouses/parents.

wow, i feel left out not living on ferry, I almost got a place at marina villa but went with Residence at West beach instead. I wanted the space and washer and dryer connections. We'll see how it goes, six mile commute still does not seem that bad.

Also, have not recieved a schedule for orientation. i'm not sure what the week could entail, besides registration and campus tours plus rush week.

See you guys there in two weeks. Maybe a few of us could meet up for dinner or a movie.

I'm at Villa Marina...hehe.

Yeah we def should get together. I won't be at QUEST though...got some appointments that I can't change. =/

I never received the reverence book. When I called the admissions office (who are responsible for all the mailings), the lady didn't know what book I was talking about. She also happened to mention that the next mailing should be sent this Friday so keep an eye on your mailboxes! :)

Ya, when I called about the June packet, the lady didn't know about that either...I went to the website and sent an email from the "Contact Us" link...and whoever that was knew what I was talking about and sent it out to me. I haven't received a book either...I'll try the email thing again I guess. It's worth a shot.

The Reverence books is "interesting." I am not exactly sure how else to describe it. It seems like some great stuff, but also some bizarre conclusions of "if A then B."

My husband and I are on our way to Gtown, in Cali right now, we will be there on August 9th. We are living on Ferry Road too, at the UTMB Apartments. We are going to Quest, and I think I am going to go to AMWA weekend too. It depends on when the moving company delivers our furniture and I see how much time I have to set-up the new place. I am getting so excited, but a little nervous. I have never even seen our new apartment. It's small but that's okay :)

I can't wait to see everyone and am sooooo happy to almost be there. I can't imagine what a whole week of orientation will involve. Maybe an orientation to anatomy lab considering the first day of class we start dissection.

The people from student life sent the "Reverence" book, but they might have sent to to an old address. http://www.utmb.edu/studentlife/ When they handed the books out at prematric, my envelope had my old address on it, even though I'd changed it in May.

I am starting to like the book more as I read past the convoluted first chapter, although I agree with arierty in that there are some odd conclusions.

I know when I spent time at a hospice last week I could tell who had a reverence for helping others face death. And believe me, when your loved ones are terminally ill, you want someone with reverence and respect to care for them.

if you went through orientation back in college, it's more of the same in med school too. last year, it ran from monday thru thursday, with thursday being very minor. they talk about the first course, PBL, school policies, diversity, professionalism, honor code, and other BS. it's all required activity for the school to do to formally introduce students, but in the end, everyone's gasping to get out after such long days! you'll have to dress up on monday because that's white coat ceremony too, but the other days can dress casual even though they tell you to dress "professionally" each day. it's exciting to finally meet everyone and see what school is all about. oh, there's no orientation for anatomy lab -- you'll have lecture the first day and then start digging immediately right after lecture! it's nothing to worry about though since the profs are amazingly cool. just one thing about the first course of med school: take as much advantage of the massive amounts of free time as possible! although GAR is hard, everything gets harder then on out.

What's this group project stuff on the orientation schedule?

My group is gonna kick your group's @$$es. :D

That's one stupid frikkin' long survey.

So I have made my move to Galveston. It's becoming more real now. :)

I'd also like to know what this group project business is all about. Work during orientation???

I think we should brain storm now, so we save time for beach volleyball during orientation.

Let's see... dress code: scrubs!

Commencement speaker: well, they keep wheeling Dr. Red Duke out from his tomb to meander on about funny topics, so why mess with a good thing?

Physician's Oath: kill as few patients as possible!

Anyone else got ideas?

It's nice that they want input and all, but students often are harder on their peers than administration. UTMB *used* to have a less rigorous grading system (ie, not based on how your fellow classmates did), but then the *students* complained that they wanted more competition. Now we have the high pass/ honors system that only allocates high grades to 50% of the class.

Oh no, I am missing out on this road trip and obviously haven't gotten my mail, what did you all get? Please please share

The only important thing was the orientation schedule...which basically consists of us sitting in Levin for 4 days listening to various presentations.

So i was wondering if the school has sent anyone anything about health insurance. I know we are required to have it, but does the school offer any or do we have to go through private companies. Also, I noticed a health fee is included in our tuition, do you know if that covers us for basic health services at the school? My insurance runs out in a few days so i need to get on top of this. So much stuff to do, when will it end. =)

UTMB's website shows that they offer student health insurance thru Mega Life which you can sign up online at http://www.studentresources.com/college/CollegeHome.aspx.

I'm in the same boat as you regarding insurance, but with all the moving and getting ready for this fall, I haven't had a chance to really look into it except to bookmark their website. :)

Good luck with everything!

so i had megalife during my 1rst year. It is only good for meds. If you have an emergency situation or see a physician off campus you might get screwed. you have to fill out those claim forms that take forever to get processed. i would only recommend it if you don't mind just going to student wellness for your health matters (primary care and psychiatry) and you have to take meds on a regular basis. otherwise, look elsewhere. i don't use megalife anymore.

orientation can be boring except for the white coat ceremony. however, try to meet as many ppl. as possible and go to any parties. also, make sure you buy scribes before class b/c you will def. need them first year....not just a plug b/c i am a reviewer....the scribe website is www.utmbscribes2008.com

and oh yeah, go to quest weekend if you can...it is fun. there are prizes, entertainment, activities all over the island, casino gambling parties, and lots of food and real drinks.

I am moving down the 13th... living at Club of the Isle.

Anyone else living there now or moving soon?

so do you guys have your books yet or do you have an idea of which ones are recomended by our upperclassmen. Is there a list somewhere of the books proff. recomend? I guess there will be time during orientation to buy them, but i dont want to start school w/o them.

Outstanding. I think all of my loan money will be tied up in rent and bills... for serious.

concerning books for first year:

1. your scribes are just as or more impt than books
2. for GAR buy a BRS Gross Anatomy (slightly better for class)or high yield gross anatomy (better for boards)
3. an atlas
3. clinical oriented anatomy- pay attention to the blue boxes which are sometimes used on tests.
4. mct has a lot of books....and you might not need all of them if you are good with biochem. and cell biology and genetics. however, don't buy the genetics text unless they changed the book. scribes work for this class, and the books are good for reference.
5. phd- buy the robbins even though it is huge. some ppl. bought the medium robbins. buy the immuno text if you need it.
6. nhb- buy the human brain book and not the kandel big book.

you can get cheap books online or at the numerous used book sales that various clubs have. if you buy books at the bookstore, save your receipt to get a cash back of 20% at the end of the school year.

that is all.

I agree with Nykka3. Scribes are important.

If you haven't bought the class of 2008 scribes, you are screwed. Period.

Just kidding...

Or am I?

i bought the scribes already, guess i am set for the year. =) thanks for the input guys. I cant believe some of you are living at the club de isle, the rent is huge, and i come from the bay area. Seems like too much money to spend while you are on financial aid. Maybe your parents are a little more generous then mine. lucky you :D :D

I'm moving down the 11th. Is anyone going to be living or already living at the Carelton Apartments?

So, since you're an officer for Scribes, you think you could put in a good word for me for elections? I'm running for Treasurer. :)

*hiding the plane tickets to Las Vegas behind my back*

Why? What do you think I'll do with it?

I'm all moved in!!! Well okay, not completely unpacked, but MOSTLY unpacked I would say. Who wants to plan an outing???? Anyone? Anyone?

By the way, I really like it in Galveston so far... been here since last weekend. I'm using a friend's computer but my internet will be up on Monday if there are any takers.

Hey, does anyone know what internet service providers (cable, dsl, etc) are available in the galveston area?

Time Warner's Road Runner service is hooked up on the island & there's an office on Teichman (west end of the island).

I'm hanging out in Seabrook for the next couple of weeks, if you'd like to visit for a chill out on the pier and some fresh grilled shrimp. Just say the word! :)

Hey, you missed out on becoming my slave labor for a major paint-a-thon today. My walls finally look less like ground zero and more perky. :)

I'll be living there. I kind of like the idea of waking up at 7:50 and dragging myself to campus half-dazed and unaware about oncoming cars.

Who all is planning on going to the Welcome Weekend hosted by AMWA this coming weekend???

I won't be able to make it for the AMWA weekend. :(

Does anyone know what the attendance is like for lectures? Is it mandatory or does attendance tend to drop off as the semester goes on? Are there pop quizzes?
