I'm in at UW's Global Health MPH for the Health Metrics & Evaluation track. IHME is a huge draw for me, but I worry that with a specific MPH in Global Health, I could find myself unable to work more locally if I so chose. My global health coworkers speak very highly of the program.

Any current UW students have comments on:
-Seattle / cost of living (especially transit / living without a car)?
-Funding / assistantships (a grad told me most people get an RA/TA position)?
-Practicum opportunities internationally?
-Possibility of getting in-state tuition for year 2?

I've spoken with grads who loved the program, and I'm more impressed by the INGO (ITECH, PATH, etc.) and donor presence (BMGF, basically) in Seattle than I am for Cal.

Anyone planning on attending UW?

Just by looking at the residency requirments, it seems very hard to establish residency. =/

Hi There!

I'm applying to the UW MPH too (different program however), and am currently working at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the Biobehavioral Health Disparities Lab. (Fred Hutch and UW are affiliates). I work with a lot of UW MPH grads at the Hutch, and know that PATH, Bill and Melinda Gates, UW, and several UW-affiliated and private health research organizations hire UW grads. The Global Health track is really competitive I believe, and really well plugged-in to the Seattle community.

I live in a neighborhood called Queen Anne, and cost of living is really affordable (I'm a former Peace Corps volunteer so....living on a budget is kind of my thing 🙂 I pay less than $500/month and live 3 blocks from the Space Needle. Commuting is great (practically free if you're a student), and Seattle is also one of the youngest, exciting cities in America I think (I'm a little biased, I grew up here). Needless to say, I love living here, as do most folks in their 20s and 30s. I'm not sure about TA positions or residency, so I apologize that I can't help there. Feel free to send me a private message about anything regarding living in Seattle! Best of luck!

I'm leaning toward UW too. I've been admitted into the Community-Oriented Public Health Practice MPH program and really love the small cohort size and case-based learning method. My only reservation is that they don't have any merit awards available (at least for my program) and it seems that you can't establish residency for in-state tuition (apparently you must work 30 hours per week at a non-student job to prove you're not there for educational purposes). A cross-country move with no possibility for scholarships or in-state tuition is a little concerning for me. The program said that RA/TA positions are available, though, which would help.
