UWash adcom meeting

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know that UW doesn't have an official revisit weekend, but I was wondering if any of you were planning on heading back to take a second look at the school...I have a tough choice to make and I'm hoping that sitting in on some classes and chatting with students will help me in the decision making process...

Good luck everyone!!!

Oh that's totally the same reason I don't want to call (at least one of the ones I'm telling myself). I almost feel more sorry for the ones who have to give the bad news than hear it. Almost. 🙂 I think the main reason probably is that as long as I don't know whether I'm in or not, there's still a chance for acceptance. It's called denial I guess. Plus I don't want to bug the admissions people. I can just imagine them in the office going, "ok.. the next person who calls to ask about their status is off the list!" And I don't want that person to be me. 🙂

Thanks everyone. this is a bittersweet experience because I know how the anticipation feels. I actually ordered the MCAT 8 practice exam from AAMC last night for 40$ getting ready to retake the MCAT. I called this morning so I can end the anxiousness and just focus on my school work... and Brook was very nice about it... To those who decide to call or wait... good luck. You have more will power than I ever have.

UW has made me feel like **** 3 years in a row. Thank you Werner.

Congrats to all accepted and ranked!

sorry to hear bjay....best of luck in the future....that goes for everyone!
and as medicinebird mentioned, though it may be hard to do so right now--feeling 😡 --me included, take a look at the goings on around the world to put things in perspective. peace! 😉

Just a renewed "good luck" to all of those who haven't heard yet...

A **CONGRATULATIONS** to those who got in or got on a waitlist...

And for those rejected... don't give up! Think about your options, take advantage of the opportunities, and I wish you the BEST in whatever you choose to do!

Big brown envelope today!

I can't believe it - I am so excited that this finally happened! I am really sorry to hear about those of you who were not accepted this year, believe me, I know what you are going through. This is my 3rd year applying (1st time rejection at the final meeting, last year unranked alternate).

This site has been a nice venue to vent frustrations and learn new info, so thank you for that!

Congrats to those of you who got in, and best of luck to those of you that didn't - keep trying if it is what you really want.

Congrats to you! Third time's a charm, right?

Everyone's been giving great advice to me about being on the unranked list (treat the meeting with WS as another interview, etc) but since you went through it last year, what was it like? Did you finally get a letter at some point saying that the wait was over or did you wallow in a small pool of hope until classes started? I haven't gotten my actual letter yet, so maybe it will all be cleared up then, but just wondering what your impressions of last year were.

Well- called this morning and it wasn't good news from Uwash. I am off to be a DO at Des Moines! Good luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear!

Sunnystar, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that UW is missing out on an awesome candidate. Regardless, you're still in at a badass institution and you're going to be a doc. Good luck to ya

olydoc, good luck to you, nail that follow-up with Dr. Samson

Ah, the unranked alternate list. For me, at least, it was nothing but straining to keep optimism while in limbo. Unfortunately my limbo ended when school started and I got the letter saying that the class had been filled and I was out of luck. The year before that, I had a friend on the unranked list and she got her letter in August, so I'm not really sure how they decide when to send the final "rejection" letters out.

Don't be like me, though, I waited until receiving that letter to apply for the following year - it's too late at that point to apply to most schools, but UW seems less stringent about applying early, especially since interviews don't even start until October. Because I did that, I only applied to UW, which we all know can be dangerous number-wise. It worked out for me this year, though.

I have met with Dr. Samson a few times now; the exit interview upon my rejection the first year, he was my interviewer last year, and then the follow-up unranked alternate meeting after that. I definitely treated that meeting with him as an official interview (basically meaning that I wore my suit) - though it's much lower stress than that. It's very conversational; he'll go over the process with you and maybe ask you some questions that popped up regarding your application. This is also a good time to ask him if there were issues that you could address or resolve or improve on, since you may not get a chance to meet with him again if you are not ultimately accepted off of the list.

Best of luck - I don't know the specific numbers, but at least a handful of people were accepted off of that list last year, so it CAN happen! Think positive, but don't put all your eggs in this year's basket - be prepared and send in your applications for next year, just in case. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Thanks! It is such a great feeling, not to mention a relief, that I finally have the chance to fulfill a dream/ambition that I have had for years. It was starting to get really depressing knowing that my life was in the hands of people who didn't know me (re: the final excom meeting). That sounds dramatic, but wanting it/deserving it doesn't always get the job done when it comes to being accepted (otherwise we'd all be there already!).

Best of luck with your applications - I know how much work they are!

Thanks so much for the scoop, Macha. I'm making my list of schools to apply to for June 1, holding on to hope alone won't get me into med school! But oh, do I want to go to the U..... 🙂

Ok..so after two sleepless nights of waiting and letting the admissions people off the hook, I ran to the mailbox today and pulled out a small envelope. 🙁 But then I was ripping it open and I saw "please respond to this offer of a place on the alternate list." AAAHHH! So I guess I'm #20... more waiting.. but, hasn't it been in the past that the ranked list is exhausted or what?! I'm freaking out here. I'm such a nutcase that I'm still on pins and needles as to whether I'll get in or not. Can anyone give any info on what has happened in the past? Thanks!

😀 I think I'm over my initial freak out now. I went and rechecked all the old posts and saw what had happened in the past. Thanks for the confirmation though. Now, just need to find a way to convince a few people to give up their spots and go elsewhere 😉

In any case, I'll let you all know what happens! It's been great reading everyone's posts. Keep 'em coming!

Hi!

I was just wondering if anyone has gotten a rejection in the mail yet? I still didn't get anything in the mail today so things aren't looking good. It seems that all the good news (letters/ranked lists) have all gone out and have been received by today. So sad!

Morning Glory--I was just wondering when your letter was dated and when the status page said action was taken on your application. Thanks for any info!

Kiwi just hang in there! I noticed on one of the other threads that you're waitlisted at WashU. You must've gotten into UW then! Or at least on the ranked list with me. 🙂 As for your other questions, my status changed on 3/28 and the letter was dated that day as well. The postage cancellation says 3/29 though. In any case, I'm sure you will hear soon! Good luck with everything!

Think of this: What if they already sent you an acceptance letter but it got lost in th email and they are going to give away your spot if you don't contact them NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! Use a damn pigeon if you have to.

I"m with MedicineBird - call!!! I finally broke down and did too today, and got the Bad News, (have to say), in the best way possible. Brooke wasn't in, so I spoke with Monica, who was gracious and gentle and spent a good 5-10 minutes talking about followup - like meeting w/ Dr. Samuels and all. SO much better than a conference between me and a mailbox and some skinny-ass envelope...Super thoughtful kind staff in that there office!! and hopefully you'll only be getting good news!!! i really wish you the best. i dialed the wrong number twice in accidental preparation for the call...

Yanita--I am sorry! But there's always next year and that meeting with Dr. Samson! Happy thoughts until then. I remember what that meeting between me, the mailbox and the rejection letter felt like. sniffles. Stay strong and apply again, and show them what you're made of! =p

Medicine Bird--Yup, I heart your posts as well! So I called and it's official--I'm on the unranked alternate list thingy. Better than last year, but no giggles here. Oh well. That officially makes 4 waitlists.

UNRANKED ALTERNATES LIST: The person I talked to said this about the unranked list: Not sure how long it is exactly. But last year, they look ~5 people from the unranked list, the before that ~9 people and the year before that, ~15 people. It varies from year to year and also most of the movement will begin after May 15th. In addition to that, you can be notified up until the first day of classes so don't give up hope and MEET with Dr. Samson...there will be more committee meetings to decide which unranked alternate gets the spot that someone else turned down...so I guess Dr. Samson doesn't have the last say, but he does have a huge influence in that decision if you meet with him. It's time for me to write a letter of interest.
Good luck to everyone still waiting!!

I found this article on the US News website while browsing the new rankings. Nothing you don't already know about UW but it was nice that Washington's unique educational program (WWAMI) was recognized. Plus Pocatello, Idaho was mentioned (where I'm from) and it's not everyday that old Poky town is mentioned on a national website. 😀 It will be interesting to see if we really are pressured into primary care. Anyways enjoy the article and maybe post your feelings.

Love reading this thread and thought it was time to post.

I was fortunate to receive a spot on the ranked alternate list as #26. As this is truly miraculous (there's usually only 25), are there any others out there on this list (27, 28, and 29)?

Else, I will have to credit my sister who lit a candle for me and my mother in law to lit an incense for me right at the time my interview started. Obviously Jesus and Buddah were at my side! There's no other explanation for my sudden rush of calmness as I walked into my interview room and the fact that I just felt damn good afterwards. For someone who really didn't have the stats (3.4 gpa, 27 mcat, 1st time applying), I really do have to admit miracles can happen.

Congrats to all who are already in! Having fun riding the wave with all those on the ranked list (we'll hit shore soon!)! Keeping my fingers crossed for those on the unranked list (pray hard, it works!)! And best of luck to those who got bad news.

Thanks everyone for helping me pass the time and keeping a smile on my face throughout this whole application process.

#26, huh? That's great! Last year it was mentioned in my unranked alternate list letter that the ranked list had only 24, so they must not always stick to the stated 25.

I'm sure you're in, now you just have to wait to hear so!

That was a nice little article to read. Actually, I'm really looking forward to the R/UOP program. I'm one of those people who would be content living outside the city and being the primary care physician for a small town. I'm trying to decide whether or not I'd like to go somewhere like Montana for those 4? weeks. I know they have some locations in the King County area that would probably make it easier as far as seeing my husband, but the idea of having this one in a lifetime chance to experience a different kind of living really tempts me. 🙂

I just discovered the forum yesterday (I've been just reading the interview feedbacks for several months and have finally decided to be more adventurous and visit other parts of the site) and I was so glad to have stumbled across this thread! I interviewed in early January, got put on the competitive list as so many of you have, and after months of nervous tension received my envelope in the mail a couple days ago. I am now the proud owner of the #12 alternate spot on the ranked list!

I pretty much read all 30 pages of this threat in one sitting last night and felt as if I was reliving the last four months of my own life. The feelings of optimism/pessimism, hope/despair, peace/anxiety that have been so eloquently expessed by you, the posters, are so like my own that I wish I had joined the forum months ago instead of just now! No one quite understands the stress that is medical school admissions quite like others who are going through the same journey (and I'm not going to count my friends who are expecting to and have gotten into Harvard and Stanford, they're in a completely different league than me).

Nice job, Nanasbananas! I totally feel you on the stats thing (I had a 3.3 GPA, 32 MCAT, 1st time applicant) When I got my letter, my heart plummeted when I read that I was on the wait list and not accepted. My phone call to the admissions office made me feel so much better. This is what Brooke told me about the wait list:

She said that this year, the ranked list has 27 spots and the unranked has 47. Ten years ago, only about 14-15 people have gained admission off the wait list but starting five years ago, the trend has been about 30-40. Last year, everybody on the ranked list got in as did several from the unranked.

Good luck to everyone! To those who have gotten into UW and other schools, your hard work and sheer determination have finally paid off!!! To those who are still waiting (like me), don't give up, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! And to those who have received disappointing news: NEVER GIVE UP. It's not a question of "if" you get into medical school, it's a question of WHEN.

I went to the exit interview this past summer and discovered that the only reason i was rejected was because I couldn't articulate my understanding of the health care field, even though I've been working full time at Swedish hospital running a clinical lab there for the past year. makes no sense to me since i thought I nailed the questions on health care. My point? This admissions process at UW is THE most subjective one along with OHSU because so many are qualified and UW looks for a particular type of class composition each year. so if you dont' fit the profile they're looking for, you're out. I got the impression from Dr. Samson that they do like reapps, but not necessarily 2nd timers more than 3rd or 3rd more than 2nd. just that you're motivated. congrats on the other acceptance cuz you're gonna need some reassurance for the long wait you have ahead (hopefully not, though) in the pool. Take care and if you have any more questions, i'm well aversed to this process as I've been doing it for awhile and won't be giving up anytime soon. 😀
TD

How to prepare for the second time?

Has anyone on the ranked alternate list heard if it has moved at all? Please post if anyone hears anything!

My bet is it won't move until after May 15th when some of us relenquish our acceptances. Sit tight.

Absolutely take the opportunity. Your husband will survive. They seem inept but with a cupboard full of hamburger helper they thrive. 😀

I guess I was just lucky. I was so discouraged, that I almost didn't reapply. But I did, and look what happened this year. You just never know...

Hi all,

For the folks who interviewed and were rejected and are applying again/ applied and got in, please let me know what you guys did.
Other than applying early and publish two papers that have been in the works for a while, I'm not sure. I haven't talked with Samson yet.
Has anyone considered international travel to make you stand out?

I would really appreciate any help you guys could give me. 🙂

thanks. 🙂

Hey Sakura181-

Thanks for the info about the UW alternate list - I had pretty much the same questions you did. Got my letter on Friday, #18 on the ranked list. Guess we just have to wait to hear.... 😕

Does anyone know why people wait till the last moment (May 15th) to give up their acceptance when they already know that they are going somewhere else?

Waitin' for the money, honey.

Does anyone know if UW tapes their lectures? I've been searching through their website and haven't found anything...

If they do, then you are not going to find it online. If it is online, the access will probably be restricted. I think it has to do with copy right issue or something like that. The best place to find them, if they do recorded, is at the health sciences library at UW.

Sorry, I should have been a bit more specific. I was wondering if the med school tapes their lectures and streams them online, for future reference... in case I get accepted and in case I need to skip a class b/c of sleep deprivation or other various reasons (I really would be a ridiculous gunner if I wanted to get a head start on the lectures now  ).

I heard from a MS1 at another med school that there's a program online that lets you download streaming videos onto your harddrive. Don't remember what it's called, but isn't that amazing? Now instead of being dependent on your internet connection and suffering through yet another buffering problem, you can watch lectures on your comp at any speed and from any place!
