UWash adcom meeting

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, everyone. I haven't posted in a while and there are a ton of new and important posts.

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted or who is on a waitlist. For those on an unranked list, you still did well, you still have a shot, so don't give up.

Someone asked about how to prepare for year two. Go see Dr. Samson, even if you got rejected. Listen to what he tells you, if there is something he says that is inaccurate, tell him why it is inaccurate. Do what he tells you to do. And try to do something that is different this year. They will ask you in your interview next year what you have done, so if you have a good answer you will be a step ahead. They will also ask you point blank what Dr. Samson told you to do and then they will ask if you did it -- you can guess that there IS a right answer to that last question!

I also agree with the post not to give up. U-Dub favors reapplicants. I am proof. 🙂

Due to waitlisting, I can't participate yet in the other part of this thread. 🙁 But I was just wondering where accepted Seattle-ites will be living? I've been living in various neighborhoods around the UW for the past 7 years or so and am pretty tired of city living. I've enjoyed being here, but think I'm ready to be away from the college atmosphere and try and settle into newly-married life as much as I can. We've been looking at open houses on the Eastside but I'm starting to wonder if that's just too far away traffic wise and bus commuting wise? I'd like to drive if I could, but imagine the monthly parking at UW is horrendous.

Anyone else in a similar situation? I imagine most will be more traditional applicants who will live in the U-district somewhere. Some nice suburb on a less traveled street sounds so much more peaceful though. 🙂 I'm kinda also concerned that it'll be harder to get together with people socially after school or whatever if we live too far away. Any thoughts are welcome. 🙂

DON'T LIVE ON THE EASTSIDE!!! I used to live in Kirkland -- 11 minutes to campus at 10pm when all was well and good but in the morning it's at least 40 minutes if all is well and good and if something happens on the 520, you're screwed. there were times that it took me 2.5hours to travel 9 miles. Not good if you have an exam or required lecture. I live in Greenlake now and that's perfect. nice area not too close but close enough to UW.

520 is the main reason I'm reconsidering where to live. I've done my fair share of cursing at the "pretty lake" drivers and the "oh my god, I can't see over this small hill, I better slow down" drivers. 🙂 I can even remember a time traffic was so bad that I turned my car off, put it in neutral, and just stuck my leg out the door and rolled every 15 minutes or so.

Wedgwood would be ideal, but housing prices are horrendous around the UW. I guess that's the other issue. Don't really want to rent and throw away money anymore though since we're capable of buying a house to build up some equity.

Any suggestions on where to live in the Moscow/Pullman area? Since we're on the subject of housing.

I'm on the ranked alternate list so I can't post where I'll be yet, but I was curious about those who will be in seattle. Are you guarenteed a position in seattle and exempt from the lottery, or is everyone put into the drawing?

I would like to live in seattle, but I'm afraid to start searching for potential residence since I haven't received an acceptance yet and I might get stuck in pullman.

For those of you who will be in seattle, when do you plan on moving there? It would be nice to move there during the summer but it would be hard to find a job for only 2 months before school starts. Does anyone know when a good time is to move there? Any short term jobs available during the summer?

From personal experience, I'd advise you to stay away from the Nez Perce apartments in Pullman. The walls are paper thin and it is easy to eavesdrop on your neighbor's conversations.

I was just wondering if anyone has scheduled or has had an interview with Dr. Samsom yet? I tried to schedule one but Amy did reply to that and only confirmed my spot on the unranked list. hmmmm, any thoughts?

Stay away from Pullman PERIOD. Blech. Moscow is much better. You can live anywhere you want -- it's so cheap. I paid only $375 for a small studio house surrounded by fruit trees and that was a lot more than any of my friends paid.

Do you suggest finding a place early? Like right after I graduate in May or before I graduate? I guess what I'm trying to ask is whether the good apartments get rented quickly?

I moved in 2 days before school started but I was lucky. I had secured the rental about 2 weeks earlier. I would say about 4-6 weeks before school starts is just right. The town fills up w/students about 2 weeks before school starts.

Not scheduled yet, but Amy said she will be making a schedule later this week. I'm another "unranked-er" so I feel the urgency! 🙂

MorningGlory: As to where to live--we're renting a house in Ravenna right now and I love our neighborhood (just west of wedgewood) but it is VERY expensive to buy here. If you don't mind the areas, I think Lake City, Northgate, and Shoreline are quite a bit cheaper and the commute would be better than the eastside. Just an idea...?

And as for Pullman/Moscow, I'm with MedicineBird--avoid Pullman at all costs and live in Moscow. Prettier, better community, less, well, Pullman! I lived in Pullman for two years, the first of which was right off Greek row. Don't ask how I didn't notice all the greek letters on those pretty buildings when I signed the lease in June, I just didn't. But Moscow is a great town. Make sure to hit the farmer's market. It's small town and REALLY good--especially the pepper selection! It's the only part that I miss. Be forewarned--the restaurants suck in general except for the Red Door in Moscow. And if you're stuck in Pullman, the European Breakfast place is good too for an early breakfast if you can beat the crowds.

the Breakfast Club in Moscow is great. It closes at 3pm though. Always lines out the door.

Living in Kirkland, Redmond, or Bellevue will probably run you a 30-60 min commute, depending on traffic. I know - I did the Redmond commute everyday for undergrad before getting fed up with it my second quarter of med school.

Lake City, Northgate, and Shoreline will probably be 25-50 min commute, also depending on traffic. Prices are pretty reasonable up there, considering.

A lot of students commute from Greenlake and most of them are pretty happy. The happiest students are probably those who live near the U Village, which is a 15 min walk.

Anybody know about the Fremont neighborhood? Rents, parking, commuting etc.? Seems pretty close to the UW.

I have a bunch of friends in the MFA program who live in (and absolutely love) the Eastlake area. I'm not sure how much rent is, but it's probably somewhat affordable considering the fact that they are grad students.

the two first years I stayed with for my interview lived in Ballard (just west of greenlake) and really liked it, it's a cute neighborhood with coffee shops, resturants and bars, seemed really chill. Plus it is right on the bus line straight to UW, only about 15-20 minutes they said also easy biking distance if that's your thing.

I certainly hope that no one feels excluded by the post about where people are going to be attending! This thread is for all applicants. 🙂

I'll be communting from Gig Harbor. I'll drive to the Tacoma Dome and then take the commuter bus that has ony two stops -- both at UW, and one right in front of the med school. It will give me an hour and a half of study, I won't have to pay for parking, I won't care about traffic, and I have a nice house to come home to. The drive to Tacoma won't be fun, the the climbing gym is on the way home! 😀

I think you win the prize for longest commute! Good luck with that - I know the drive on I-16 can be jam-packed going to Tacoma.

Yea, it depends on the time of day. It will be interesting to see how things go when they put the toll booth in with the completion of the new bridge! 😱

If you think about the commute in terms of just to the Tacoma Dome it's not so different from many other people. I'll spend ALL of the time on the bus with my ipod and my books. 🙂

Nah.. 🙂 don't feel excluded, just don't want to be presumptuous about where I'll be next year. Don't wanna jinx anything, ya know? 😉

And as far as your commute, may I just say Ugh!? I've tried studying on buses and I just get sick reading. Maybe taped lectures wouldn't be so bad. Good luck to you NeuroSync. 🙂

If I were single, I'd be in Seattle, probably. But my husband's practice is in the South Sound, and I sure do like where I come home to!

I have to sit in the front of the bus, or I cannot read either. It will be a good, solid hour and fourty minutes that I'd spend studying somewhere anyway. I'll try to get most of my clinical rotations down here. Most of you guys will want to stay in Seattle, so it should not be too bad in terms of scheduling them.

It's all good. . . 🙂

Just spoke to Pat Fero today (for address stuff) and found out that all on the alternate ranked list have moved up two spots. Yippee!

Thanks for your quick response....good to know someone is out there.....anyway...I know my neuro message was a little egotisical...I was just joking...

Buuuuuut, I do think research is critical and as an undergrad you can do all sorts of research...you just have to have a solid work ethic....I know lots of undergrads that have gotten published....and that helps a lot with med school...

Do you know if they let non-neuro people take nbio classes? 301 sounds really cool. Also apart of your dept do they let you take neurobio & behavior courses...'cuz damn NEUBEH 528 sounds so cool!!! 😍

Nope, I think it's just for majors because of limited lab space.

Hello: Unranked waitlister here. I have a meeting with Dr. Samson at the end of this week...so, I was wondering if anyone has any advice/warnings/tips, etc...? Is it going to be like any other exit interview? Thanks for any input you guys!

Congrats on the ranked list moving up! =p

Kiwi:
Definitely dress as you would for an interview. This is an opportunity to tell Dr. Samson what you didn't have time to tell your panel, or to clarify and emphasize anything you think is important. This is a time to sell yourself. Also, make sure to listen, be humble, and be enthusiastic about doing whatever you have to do to go to UW.
Dr. Samson is MUCH different in this interview. It is much more relaxed, but just as important. He will pick people from the unranked list when the ranked list is exhausted.
Good luck. I hope it goes really well for you. 🙂

I meet with Dr. Samson at the end of this week as well.... Only 15 minutes! Unfortunately my suit doesn't fit anymore (long story) and I'm thinking that I'll just go in nice slacks instead of buying a new one. I'm just going over my application one more time--it's been a while now. This unranked waitlist is really a strange place to be--I think the chances of us getting accepted at this point are pretty slim, so I'm going to basically use this meeting to get advice about what to do for this next application cycle. But, there's still a chance, right? So good luck to you KiwiFruit. :luck:

I'm trying to make my list of schools right now as I could only apply to two for this cycle because of geographical/familial limitations. I'm going to bury myself in the MSAR at some point this week I think. Anyone have other schools that they really loved while they were interviewing this year? I'd love some local input.

If you don't mind the Midwest, I really liked Medical College of Wisconsin. The school is private/free-standing and really really new. The students are so nice and the admissions people are sweet. Same with Wash U. Good luck applying again! I'm kinda doing the same thing, trying to find schools. I know chances for UW are slim, but I haven't entirely given up yet!

Good luck to you too!! 😀

Thanks Neurosync! Good luck on your commute!! =p I had to commute for undergrad, from the opposite direction, but I used the bus time to study or catch up on sleep. It was great. Not bad at all, although i do wish I lived in seattle at times...but that was because of the things to do, not the commute!

Hi Olydoc... I don't know if you're considering osteopathic medicine, but I interviewed with several schools and absolutely fell in LOVE with DMU (Des Moines University). I don't know if Iowa is doable for you, but I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend. Good luck! :luck:

Thanks, Kiwi. I think that you are the first person to actually be POSTIVE about the commute. I'm looking forward to the forced down time to get some work done, actually. And, being that I'm older and married, and the quite type, I'm HAPPY to be in my enclave of solitude down here. 🙂
I really, really hope it goes well for you this week.

According to a poster on the other UWSOM thread, the ranked waitlist has now moved up 10 spots!

I am happy to report that I was selected to be (stay) in Seattle for the first year. I didn't join in the "where will you be conversation" started by NeuroSync because my fate hadn't been decided yet, but now I can say for sure that I'll be in Seattle!

That's great news about the waiting list! Good luck to all of the wait-listers! Keep us posted...

I just withdrew my acceptance this morning, so there should be some movement for you guys soon 🙂
Enjoy Seattle! It's a great city. I'll eventually make it back...

Thanks, and good luck to you wherever you are going. Anybody hear anything else on waitlist movement? I called a few times last week and I'm thinking about calling at the end of the day Friday just so we know where we stand as we approach glorious May 15.
