Alright folks. I am off to Honduras for 7 days. Don't have too much scintillating conversation without me, because I definitely won't be spending what tiny little internet time I may have checking studentdoctor. (No offense)

Woohoo, post 250!

Later, man.

The status website works again, not that I'm seeing anything new. I feel so complete.

I think 12 days until we learn our fates...

although I'll admit my first instinct was 12th man. (don't know why!)

ruraldr wins! 12 days until accept-reject-waitlist decisions for we washingtonians. :0) any other time, 12 would be a 12th man reference.

thanks, drmidlife, for pointing out that rainier.som is working again. i'll be able to obsessively click refresh every 1.027 nanoseconds for the next 12 days.

ok, i'm not that bad. but still.

i can't seriously job-hunt until i have a UWSOM decision (as opposed to a UWSOM letter, because i'm due a layoff letter from them too), so now the waiting really is driving me nuts. i forecast a lot of skiing next week. especially since i have three weeks of vacation time to use up!

other than working, how are you guys killing the hours? anyone seen any movies worth going to?

Have you rented "once"?

I really liked it. 🙂

Ahh, gotcha. It felt like it was forever ago when someone said it was 13 days. And so the waiting continues...

I know what you mean, PJ. Time is taking its sweet time dragging by.

"Once" eh? I googled it - sounds interesting. Thanks for the tip!

So I'm looking at smileys and I'm bored, so here's a play-by-play of my interview day:

Arrived.
Heard about role playing at lunch: 😱
Googled people on my committee: 🙂
One interviewer no-showed: 😕
Rocked the first question: 👍
Bombed the second: :barf:
BS'd my way through the third: :bullcrap:
Continued even further downhill: :beat:
Heard my role playing scenario:
Aced the role playing:
Interview ended: :boom:
Fled the building.

That was fun. Okay dinner time. Talk to you guys later.

You know what this reminded me of? Those books where they taught you to read by pressing the pictures and listening to the sounds. Woo! Hahahaha

So much time is still left ._.

I didn't have any role playing. Instead, they asked ME to come up with an important ethical situation!

Is anyone filling out the form for the SOM scholarship? I'm not sure if that's for anyone or for those accepted.

Hey PJ--where is that form available?

I had been waiting to fill out the forms until I heard more from them, but maybe I should take a look?

It was mentioned in the email from Diane Noecker after you submit your FAFSA, which I'm having trouble locating right now. I think the deadline's March 31.

The SOM scholarship isn't due until May 31st. They stated in their email "The SOM scholarship application is a separate form that is due
May 31, 2008. It will be available in T-557 and it will be mailed to all of the
admitted and alternate students in March. It will also be at the first year
WWAMI offices."

Thanks Woniu for clarifying. I just looked up the email as pj's post got me worrying about how I wasn't paying attention enough to financial aid stuff (it's hard to motivate to fill out all these forms when you aren't sure if you'll actually even be in school). 🙂

Hah! Got the months mixed up. Apparently I'm the one not paying attention to things... 🙄

Did any Idaho applicants in the competitive pool hear back yet?? I never did, so am guessing a rejection. Suck. Good luck to yall!

nate, did your status change online? If not, maybe they are waiting for the final meetings?

Oh, yup! It says to expect a letter by 3/27/08. dohhhhh!

I'll still hold out hope for you--since no one from Idaho is posting good news, maybe they haven't emailed anyone yet? Too distracted by match day maybe?

Nate,

I'm in the same boat as you- in the Idaho competitive pool and didn't hear anything either. I spoke to the admissions office yesterday (Wednesday) and they said they were emailing acceptances/waitlist spots out this morning. Heres to hoping that maybe they're a day late...... How bout anyone else out there from Idaho, have you heard anything?

Ha ha! Thanks bro. This has been about the worst week of my life. It is spring break, and I started it out by getting a 110 dollar speeding ticket, then a flu virus for 2 days, and then my mom left me home to go to Florida, and then the basement just flooded. I am currently using a wet vac to dry it all up. This is just the icing on the crap cake. Good thing there are no cliffs nearby to jump off of🙂

TBPAP-

Did they rank you on the waitlist? Or is it unranked?

Hey sorry just got back from vacation. Yeah, I'm #1 on the Wyoming WWAMI list

Hey TBPAP - here's crossing my fingers that one Wyoming kid turns down their acceptance so you can go!

So news. I got un laid off yesterday. My boss guilt tripped someone into giving us the funding for the project that we weren't going to get funding for since some other dumb*** threw out the specimens. So until they change their minds again or some other catastrophe occurs (Monday, perhaps?), I have my job back. I can't decide how this makes me feel about luck on the UWSOM decision - but I'm happy because now, regardless of how THAT turns out, I have a job until I find one that I want more! (I swear, I'm not a troll - this really did all happen - what a freaking week)

Luck o' the Irish to you Idaho WWAMI folks!! :luck:

Sorry to hear you're having a bad week... Mine's been one ginormous roller coaster. Maybe something awesome will happen today for you!

congrats tbpap--I imagine that's a good place to be sitting? and congrats HIVdoc--good news on getting the job back--hopefully that makes one less thing to worry about.

I'm headed on a rural healthcare spring break trip next week, so getting excited to have a week off from work and school.

Hey ruraldr, thanks! Also, I'm envious of your spring break trip. And the timing is probably great so that you have something to distract you from spending next week hanging from the walls like the rest of us. Where are you going? Have a great time!

Of curiosity - does anyone know, do they send any emails after the final ExCom meetings? Or is all news delivered via snail mail? Will they tell you anything if you call first thing Monday morning?

I would expect that they send out emails. I mean, notifications shouldn't change because it's the last set of meetings, right? Well, that's what I'm hoping

I'm headed to the Southern Yakima Valley (very near the Oregon border, a town of about 2000). I'm really looking forward to it--I did something very similiar last year and it was one of my best clinical experiences to date.

Just hoping I'll get over the pass on Sunday without too much trouble--looks like they are forecasting snow!

ruraldr, that sounds awesome. Do you actually get to do clinical things?

If it reassures you any about the pass, it's been snowing off and on up there all week and they, to my knowledge, have not even gotten to the point of making the trucks chain up yet. And it's late season so if it does snow, it's likely to be mostly slush on the roadway. It's Snoqualmie so you never can tell for sure, but don't stress over it. 😀

PJ, the reason I asked was I seem to remember reading on one of the UW threads either this year or last that all the decisions will come via snail mail. I hope that's wrong and you're right!

I also looked at some old threads, in particular the waitlist thread. The people who got off the waitlist were emailed about their acceptance, so I'm assuming that they continue the email thing.

And congrats on being re-hired! One less thing to worry about.

Were there any EXCOM meetings this week? I see on the schedule they had a scramble and match day grayed out this week, but wasn't sure if there were meetings on those days.

I'm freaking out.
9.5...

Thanks for the driving re-assurance. 🙂

I'm hoping to get to do clinical things (got to do some last year) but it might be shadowing only--I think that will depend on the clinic and what's going on. Either way it will be exciting to spend a whole week in one place and see so much patient interaction.

Thanks HIVdoc2b and ruraldr! I was told by the office that last year they didn't have a WY waitlist but the year before they did and the top 3 got in. :scared:
I'm not sure about IS, but from what I have gathered from talking to other WY applicants is most the time your interviewer will e-mail you after the meeting on friday, but you don't get the official e-mail for acceptance until the following monday. I didn't get an e-mail on monday so I called them in the afternoon and found out about the waitlist.

I hope you all get great news this next week. Congrats, tbpap on your #1 spot, that's great!

Just to put it out there: When I was moved from "under consideration" to the alternate list, I didn't get an e-mail - but I did call them on Monday after the meetings. I also got a letter which took more than a week to get here. The letter says I "will be considered for positions as they become available until registration for the entering class of 2008 is complete, usually the last week in September."

Anyone know of someone who waited that long and got in?

Anyone else out there on the Alaska waitlist?

AlaskaHopeful... Woof. Sorry to hear about the alternates list and how much freaking longer they're going to leave you hanging - that sucks! But, at least you're not totally out of luck so hang in there and I'll send lots of positive WWAMI vibes your way! :luck: :luck: :luck: Also. How can the leave it until the LAST week in Sept? Doesn't orientation start in mid Aug for the Alaska WWAMI program?

Meanwhile, for the Washingtonians in the crowd... 8! Is anyone else nervous yet?

Ahhhhh, still a whole week left!! :scared:

My letter said the same thing...last week of sept! I don't know if anyone actually goes that far and gets accepted. It'd be hard to start medical school a month+ after classes started!

What is the difference between being "selected" as an alternate and being put on the waitlist?

XT777 - I don't believe there is a difference between alternate and wait list - even the admissions office staff have used the terms interchangeably on the phone.

😕 UWSOM calls their waitlist an "alternate list", which is where you go if you are both not "not accepted", and not "accepted" after the final ExCom meeting. You may have arrived on the "alternate list" from the "pool of applicants that are under consideration" after being both not "not accepted", and not "accepted" after your interview which sucked, but didn't suck enough for them to "not accept" you, like me, OR, if you are from a state which has two interview sessions, you may never see the "pool of applicants that are under consideration", instead, if your good-but-not-great interview directly preceded the final ExCom meeting, you may proceed directly to the "alternate list." 😳

If you are in a WAMI state, your chances of getting accepted off the alternate list are unknown (by me), but it looks like - from last year's thread- that the Washington folks are almost assuredly going to get an acceptance if they eventually arrive on the "alternate list".
whew!

HIVdoc2b- Thanks for the good vibes - same to you and everyone waiting! Yeah, it seems ridiculous to mention a possible September start-date - probably it's just a generic letter sent to everyone, but it's just not right. anyway, good luck to you!

AlaskaHopeful - sounds like your alternates list is the same as the unranked waitlist... except obviously for the Alaska WWAMI spots. Can they leave you hanging until late Sept for ALL UWSOM waitlists? That's just freaking brutal!

7. I think I'm gonna puke...

So an alternate list for alaska has different meaning than the alternate list for washington residents? thats weird. Alaskahopeful, I'm sure you will hear back from them before september. Good luck!

While it's pretty rare, there have been occasions in which people were accepted just a few days before classes began. Usually, something major happens to someone, causing them to defer at the last minute and opening up a spot.

I read about someone who heard pretty late from UW on SDN, but I can't recall details exactly. It's generally a rare circumstance.

ok, sorry all, I didn't read this carefully enough. I'll shut up now!

I'm coming to the conclusion that med school admissions are a gigantic black box. Application in, decision out. Who knows what all the rest of it means.

HIVdoc2b - Yeah, my explanation was kinda convoluted on purpose to exaggerate the crazy waiting game we go through.

koopa - thanks - good luck to you too! Actually, I believe the alternate list for Alaska is like the ranked alternate list for Washington, but, because we have two distinct sessions of interviews, some people who interviewed during the last session may go directly to (ranked) alternate status without being (unranked) "under consideration" first. I'm pretty sure it's a ranked list only - there's no unranked alternate list - I haven't heard of that yet for Alaska.

pj- thanks, yeah, it would be nice to know before September one way or the other! I'm thinking in May we'll all know for sure.

Oh my lord.... tomorrow is day one of three that decides whether or not we'll be classmates. 😱 ahhhhhhhhh

:luck: to everyone!

Yeah seriously, I am crazy nervous right now. I've heard that some people in the past were able to call on the last day of the EXCOM meetings and find their fate before the weekend. Anyone know if there is truth to this?

I think knowing any type of answer before the weekend would be easier on my liver. Anyway, good luck to everyone waiting around.
