Hey guys, did you end up using your vacation time for interviews or actual vacation? I wanted to use all my vacation time for actual vacation and just take unpaid time off for interviews. What are your thoughts on this?

How far ahead of the day off they require you to schedule a vacation probably makes this decision for a lot of people. Sometimes you have 5 weeks notice before an interview, once in awhile you know <1week before.

If there is no difference in how you schedule it, I would say use your vacation time first - you can always take time off for a vacation with unpaid time - the same amount as what you used for your interviews. This is just in case something happens and you can't use the vacation time - you'll be using the same or less unpaid time in this case.

I don't usually take unpaid or paid vacation time for interviews... I just switch my schedule around and go on my days off.

3 12s per week being full time employment for the win!

It’s really going to depend on the policies at where you work. Unpaid time off is handled very differently different places. So check with them first but I’d absolutely use unpaid time off for applications if I could.

This is one of the many many reasons I liked being self employed

Can you use sick time instead? I only say that because some places pay out your vacation time when you quit, but make you relinquish your sick time.
I need a doctors note for sick time and I don’t want to fake sickness for the interviews because that would reflect poorly on me and the doctor

Unfortunately, I require one if two days happen within a certain time frame. It’s awful.

That sucks. Sorry. We have to come into work and go to sick call to see if we are sick enough to go home (although as a student, I can take a sick day without going to medical first, but I’m required to go if I expect to be out more than 24 hours). But that’s the military. You’d think civilian employers would be a little more relaxed.

No way man; when I was in it was way easier to hit sick call or get a light duty chit. Where I work now as a nasty civ, even with direct patient contact, I better have an amputation or my ass needs to be on the rig.

Wow. At my last command, the only thing getting you an siq chit outside of trauma was the flu or GAS. They made me come in and stand duty the day after I threw up 10 times and shat myself 4 or 5 times from noro. It was a Saturday duty day, but the section leader refused to let me stay home. They had an IV and some promethazine waiting for me when I got there lol.

Of course he did. If he sent you home his ass would be standing duty, that blows lol.

That, coincidentally, is also the standard rifle qual hangover treatment. Well and Motrin with clean socks of course.

Sometimes I miss the shenanigans.

Oh wow. I thought that was illegal if you had the sick time banked. Well, that sucks. I definitely wouldn’t suggest you rope a doctor into this to get fake notes.

I think this is why a lot of places have moved to personal leave - use it for vacation or sick time and no questions asked. But it’s a pain if you have to use it for sick time because you feel like you wasted a vacation...
