VCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was wondering what you put down for other schools attended in the background paperwork. I called and spoke with Adair from the background check company and he didn't seem to know what I was talking about, but he said to put down the school from where I achieved the highest degree. Does this make sense to you?

Yea- I put the undergraduate school I attended; and for other schools I think I put a school I took a summer class in. If I had only attended the school I received my degree from and did not attended any other college or University I would have kept it blank.

i just interviewed at PCOM-GA and heard a rumor about VCOM. one of the interviewees (who works at florida state) told me that v-tech is planning to lose its affiliation with vcom because they will be getting their own MD school. she told me it was way on down the road and wouldn't affect any of us, but i guess i just wanted to see if anyone else had heard something similar and if there was any grain of truth to that rumor.

Nope. I did not hear anything about the rumor.

How did your interview go at PCOM-GA?

It is no rumor. Carilion will be welcoming its first class in 2009 or 2010.
I am not so sure how it will affect VCOM since it is specifically for research but it will at least be around Virginia Tech and is definitely assocaited with VT.

How did your interview go at PCOM-GA?

It went really well, actually. It's going to be a tough decision if I end up getting in. I've been trying to come up with pros and cons of each school. I really liked Blacksburg, but Atlanta has never really appealed to me. I guess I probably shouldn't worry about it until I hear back from them. How about you, how did yours go? Did you take it?

I don't really see how or why VT would want to lose it's affiliation with VCOM because another medical school is opening up a half hour away that is matriculating 40 students.

I think it is exciting actually...

yeah, i don't think it will affect VCOM either. it's kind of hard to cut ties with a medical school in your backyard.
i've already sent in a deposit to VCOM, but i'm not totally 100% sure that i'm going there yet. this was just something i wanted to research before i decided.

Hey everyone,

I just got the call for acceptance to VCOM today! I am excited and feel that VCOM is where I am supposed to be. Almost 100% I'll be sending in my deposit soon. So, you may see me post a bit more on this thread from now on!

Congrats! Great feeling isn't it? I loved VCOM, Blacksburg, and VT. Glad to see more of us excited to be posting in the VCOM thread.

congrats, crisp!

just out of curiosity - how many people who are going to VCOM next year or are applying want to go into rural medicine?

Well it's definately official. I am coming to VCOM! I haven't sent in the deposit yet but I have formally withdrawn my other acceptance. I am very excited about being in VA this fall. If some of you want to get to know each other better, send me an email. Look forward to knowing my future classmates!

congrats, crisp!

we all say during our interviews that we want to do rural medicine....but the fact is, many of my classmates want to do surgery, IM, OBGYN, and so on.....

but there are some people who want to do rural and they are rare in number.

why is VMRCVM still mentioned on the VT Grad School website and VCOM isn't?

It was explained to me as (and I think this is the most ******ed thing I have ever heard) because VMRCVM is physically on campus and VCOM is not.

Which also means we have to follow Tech's weather policies..which is why with the most recent snowstorm, ya'all got a nice 2 hour delay and we did not! (grumble grumble ) 😉

It bothers me also when no one knows about VCOM at Tech....I'm very proud of having DO school here! But then again half the people (undergrads, etc) don't even know we have a veterinary school (and I'm serious).

I got the acceptance call from VCOM on 17th..
I am so excited!!!!!!!!!!
see you guys in August!

Simpleman has anyone in your class tried using Dragon during lectures?

Dragon is a voice recogniton program which puts words in writing, therefore everything that a lecturer says is automatically typed in by the computer at a speed of up to 160 words per minute. I would be easier on the hands and better for those who one finger type. If you want a better look at what I am talking about you can a see a demo at nuance.com.

Does anyone know the date of Accepted Students Day?

Accepted Students Day is Saturday April 5th.

I apologize for my late response. Its exam week and there is SO much to learn and memorize. To answer your question, NO.....you honestly dont need that software program. You can certainly buy one, but you wont need it most of the time. Plus, I thought these programs needed you to train them to a specific voice.....but then again, who knows with the advancement of technology, anything is possible these days.

All your lectures are on powerpoints and you will type a sentence or two here and there...not too many. The professors will even tell you to write what they are about to say, if they are trying to emphasize something.

Also, if you need to go back to the lectures for any reason, the lectures are online and starting next block (I think......it may have actually started), the lectures will fully be videotaped and be online as well.

The only lecture that you will need your fingers to be fast is the anatomy lectures b/c the Dr. is giving so many clinical examples to the pertaining picture on the overhead.....and you would want to type down everything she says, but its impossible at times b/c she is quick. But then again, we have the mp3 files online and you can review them at your leisure time when you get back.

Simpleman, so what you are saying is that everything that the professors go over is digitally available, and if it is, can it be downloaded to our personal pc?

VCOM requires a DTP titer. Has anyone gotten this drawn yet? I cannot find any lab in the state (Florida) that draws them. I checked with Carillion Family Medicine, (which is in Blacksburg) and they said that they could draw it for $400.00 bucks!

Hmmmm...I wonder if the whole DTP titer thing is a mistake. Anyone know anything about this?

BlueNight I believe all you need is the vaccination. Double check the form.

yes, the lecture will be digitally available!!! which will be cool. and Yes attendance is mandatory. People say that they wont show up to class if this happens, but its really difficult t do so.

It is really noticeable if u dont show up to class and people will start talking about you. PLus, you know, there are always pop quizzes right after lecture to see if we were paying attention. So if we didnt show up, it would hurt us badly. PLus, sometimes, the professors would turn off the mic and tell us questions that will show up on the exam in order for people who attend the lecture to benefit.

Many of you guys have sent me emails here on SDN. I will answer them, but it will take time.....so forgive me. They are great questions and I think I will be able to answer them to the fullest. Just bare with me 😀 If I only had time in my hands, I would write right away, but time flys so fast, you dont feel it.... It feels like monday was yesterday!

Enjoy your time right now and relax.....hangout with friends and family alot before you start med school.

Mrsa2000,

A few days ago, Connie Goodman e-mailed out a "Frequently Asked Questions" document to accepted students. Under the immunizations section it stated, "Titers for DTP, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Varicella are required for all VCOM students. You must show immunity from these diseases."

I guess that I better email her or call her about it. I just hate to seem like a bother. I'll let everyone know what I find out. The DTP thing must be an error.

Thanks.

Bluenight,

During my healthwork experience, I have never been required to prove a DTP titer ( just sounds strange). Plus, if I am reading the health requirements correctly I think it is only the tetanus that is needed, not the pertussis and diphtheroid vaccination. So why titer for diphtheria and pertussis

Applicants accepted for admission are required to submit medical history and physical examination information on a VCOM form that has been completed and signed by a licensed physician, prior to matriculation. Students must maintain requirements throughout enrollment. VCOM requires the following laboratory tests and immunizations:

ANNUAL TB TEST (Date of placement and date of reading with results). If you have a history or a positive PPD skin test, 10 mm or more in duration, do not get another PPD. Instead, you will need a chest x-ray and to submit documentation. A new convertor (new positive result) or those with a positive chest x-ray must follow up with the Health Department or their physician and submit documentation.
TETANUS TOXOID IMMUNIZATION (Within the last ten years). Submit documentation. Requirements or procedures for late acceptance and international students may be individualized.
HEPATITIS B VIRUS (HBV): General: Hepatitis B exposure may result in acute liver disease with or without jaundice, subclinical disease or chronic infection. After a needlestick accident from a HBV infected person to an un-immunized person, risk of infection ranges from 3-30%.
Prevention: ALL students are required to receive HBV vaccination (3 doses at appropriate intervals) prior to matriculation. This will result in successful immunization in 95% of healthy young adults. Test for anti-HBs (antibodies to HBV surface antigen) should be performed 1-2 months after completion of the vaccination series. Students admitted with documented prior vaccination history should also provide immune status documentation. If that is not available, current immune status should be determined. Those who do not seroconvert should be REVACCINATED with a full series. If after a second series, titers remain below 10mlU/mL, the person is considered at risk for acquiring HBV. Education principles of UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS (see below) will be provided regarding treatment in the event of exposure.
MEASLES (RUBEOLA), RUBELLA, AND MUMPS with vaccination dates and proof of immunity by antibody TITERS; laboratory documentation is required. If titer does not indicate proof of immunity, a booster Rubeola, and/or Rubella, and/or Mumps will be required.
VARICELLA history of disease will not be accepted. Student must provide proof of immunizations or positive TITER.
MENINGOCOCOCCAL VACCINE; proof of immunization is required. This vaccine can prevent four types of meningococcal disease, including two of the three types most common in the US (serogroup C, Y, and W-135) and a type that causes epidemics in Africa.
INFLUENZA vaccine is routinely recommended for all healthcare providers yearly, but is not required.
ADDITIONAL IMMUNIZATIONS may be required for those students participating in international rotations. Evidence of the above requirements is required prior to matriculation at VCOM and must be verified with the Registrar. Incomplete forms will prevent matriculation.

Hope this helps

If you have proof of vaccicines you wont need the titer. I didnt have proof so I went to my family doc and it only cost $80. I never heard of them charging so much and not being able to get them in a whole state. Are you sure they understood what you were needing. I have had it done for my Hep B as well as my DTP. Basically you need to prove you are immune to all these. You can get the shots or get the titers. It really isnt a big deal🙂

I would check with your undergrad school to see if you were required to have all tehse to start school. My school had to have some of these and they still had the records from teh titers I got from them. Its worth a call to see if your undergrad school still has records for you on these immunizations.

You will need a TB test every year once you start ECEs (early clinical experience) as well as rotations. The hospitals and the offices we go to will require them.

Accepted Students Day is Saturday April 5th.

Who and When did you find out this date? I talked to Megan several weeks ago and she said the date wasn't set. She also said she would notify me when the date was set. This is the first I have heard of a date....although, the 5th is what I was expecting. Are you sure this is the official date?

You are right, I also work in the healthcare field and have never been asked for titers.
The following is an excerpt from the email that I received from the registrars office:

Do I have to fill out everything on the Immunization Form? Why do I have to have follow-up titers?
Yes, the clinics and hospitals that you will be doing your Early Clinical Experiences and Third and Fourth Year Rotations are subject to criteria set out by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). All students must adhere to the policies set out by the hospitals and clinics in which you will be working your four years as a medical student.
Titers for DTP, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B and Varicella are required for all VCOM students. You must show your immunity from these diseases.
Please refer to the 2012 webpage for the form and the technical requirements needed for filling out the form. Take your technical requirements page with you when you visit your physician, so that the physician filling out your forms can see the requirements VCOM sets.
The Immunization Form and the Student History & Physical Form are counted as one complete document. Please do not return one without the other. If you have any questions about these forms please refer to the 2012 website for a complete explanation. If you are given an extension on any part of your Immunization Form, hold onto your form until everything is complete, and then submit both forms at the same time.

Thanks guys.

Maybe I am missing something but I don't see a place to write the DTP titers on the immunization form. All I see is places for dates of booster shots. Can anyone clear this up for me?

I just spoke with VCOM and they do not have an official date at this time. Kathy told me as soon as they have an official date it will be posted on the VCOM 2012 site.

Does anyone know why VCOM hasn't started offering health insurance and have it included in their tuition?? And do you think that VCOM should not make life insurance mandatory??? We are going to be full time medical students, without a job, and I think it is ridiculous that we are going to be responsible to pay $100 or so per month out of our own pocket just for health insurance. :scared: I've heard plenty of times from fellow medical students and residents that they did not have to worry about obtaining their own personal health insurance since it was provided through the school.

Does anyone know when all this immunization stuff has to be turned in by? Hope not anytime soon....😱

Thanks!

Dr. Edi90210,
I am sure you are aware of the amount of foreclosures, and credit card defaults. Well the people that are backing us for our loans want to know that they will get paid in the event of an accidental death etc....
Also, I am a big customer of credit cards, house loans, and car loans. With that being said I would like to know that people are being held accountable for their debts. If not, then it is passed down to those of us who are responsible with our debts. So, life insurance is not a bad idea, and I hope that no one would have to use it. In additon, life insurance is not that expensive(for most of us in our 20's-30's), but again I do agree that health insurance is on the pricier end and relief would be helpful.
I am ok with the requirements of VCOM. Once again, I do agree the health insurance could be handled differently, under the assumption that VCOM does not offer any at all (I don't know anything about VCOM and its offering of health insurance because I have my own and plan on paying it myself).

State Farm offered me a 14 dollar a month life insurance that lasted 5 years. I opted for the life time life insurance haha for 25. It really isnt that expensive.

Hey guys! I just wanted to make sure about that DTP titer... I just got a DTP shot and have proof of it, do I still need a titer to prove that I'm immune... I tried contacting the school but i just can't get a hold of them. Let me know! Maybe the DTP titer is a misprint??

yea i think it is a misprint. My doc laughed at me when I mentioned a DTP titer...

I was just wondering if there are any gym and fitness junkies out there?

I can't wait to go to the gyms on the VTech campus. I even got a workout at one of them the day before my interview. It was gorgeous! I am even thinking about getting a road bike for all of the trails they apparently have in Blacksburg.

you mean a motorbike? or like a mountain bike
i have a gary fisher and can't wait to use it out there
what did you like about the facilities out there sexyman?

Neither on the bikes ha, I meant a bike like the ones Lance Armstrong rides.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_bicycle

But a nice mountain bike will do as well.

I went to the gym that is inside that mall thing that they have on campus. It was real nice, reminded me of the Gold's that I train at at home. They had top notch new equipment (machines, free-weights, cardio), and was kept very clean and organized (no weights out of order or on the ground unlike at some other undergrad gyms I've been to).

If I remember a lot of the equipment they had was Hammer strength which I am a fan of. Like I said it reminded me more of a business gym (Gold's, World's, etc) rather then some cheesy college gym.

oh you ment a racing bike, got it.
You do the traditional six parts in your work outs?

You mean 6 body part split? Mon-Chest, Tues, Back etc? If so noooo. I find that to be a waste of time. You?

two body parts a day one in the morning and other in the afternoon or evening.

I've never been a fan of double sessions. Going to the gym more then once in the day always seemed a bit over the top to me, I mean I guess it worked for Arnold in 75 but I'm not a fan of high volume training anyway lol.

I normally split my workouts into upper body and lower body days.

For instance:
Mon: Upper, Tues: Lower, Wed: Off, Thurs: Upper, Fri: lower
This way I get to train every body part twice a week and I'm only in the gym 4 days.

or
Mon: Upper, Wed: lower, Fri: Upper
I find this to be most practical. I am in the gym 3 days a week and hit all my of my upper body twice a week and lower once a week. The other days are free to play golf, racquetball, etc.

* Note: each workout only lasts a little over an hour.

Sexyman,

I have an open mind. I think each person has a different agenda, and I think that your work out is a good one. I do like the fact that it allows you to do other different activities (i.e racquetball).

I prefer high intensity workouts that allow you to focus on a body part. I either split my day or I do both body parts in about a little over an hour to an hour and a half. Then I do about 20-30 minutes of cardio rotating running (treadmill and ground approx. 2.5 miles) and swimming (about 800 meters).
