Hello...
Does anyone know if VCOM calls all of its applicants before the secondary is submitted just to let them know that if they have questions they can call the admission's office?

Also, I know that the school collaborates with Virginia Tech for research etc, but does anyone know what type of research opportunities are available? I am particulary interested in genetics.

thanks

I think they call everybody. I got a call and I am a non URM with a 17 composit on my MCAT and a 2.5 GPA. Just kidding, but a bunch a people have been posting about the calls in other forums, you can read their posts.

Are you worried because you didn't get a call?

I have to tell you about when they called me. My caller ID would register a strange name and a local phone number for Northern VA every time they called me. The name was Fred Sheinider. The first time they called, I almost didn't answer it. I almost yelled at Megan because I assumed she was a telemarketer and I let those people have it. I hate telemarketer calls. I asked VCOM about the weird number and name on my caller ID but they were as baffled as I was.

As to the research, the dr. that interviewed me did cancer research. She did say that no first years are allowed to do any research so it doesn't interfer with classes.

got a call letting me know that they have my file and it is now complete

I did receive a phone call. I am simply amazed that they take the time to contact everyone...although I don't know how many applications they receive.

Amy B, thanks for answering my questions.

Do you know if they interview "non-Appalachia" students throughout the application cycle, or only after they feel comfortable that they have interviewed all applicants from Virginia and surrounding areas?

That, I am not sure about. I know that ~50% of the seats in the class are to go to appalachian region students, but I don't know how interviews work.

I interviewed on the first day last year and I seem to recall one of the people there wasn't from the appalachian region. I thought they were from Philly or NEw Jersey, but honestly I can't remember.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Perhaps someone here who has interviewed there in the beginning of last year's cycle and who wasn't from the appalachian region could answer BMS's question.

I interviewed there for the first class two years ago. I'm from TX. Hope that helps.

Now I got the elusive Virginia COM phone call. That is pretty awesome that they do that, kind of gives me a good feeling about the school from early on. She also mentioned interviews would start late in August and into September and that I would be invited for one, can't wait.

@ Amy B: when do you start classes? seems like everyone has either started or will be starting in the next 2 weeks. good luck to you.

Hi,

We have orientation starting August 18 thru August 20 or 21st. Actual classes start on August 23rd.

If anyone here gets an interview invite, let me know and I will try to come to the office and find you to say hello.

To respond to the earlier question about whether they first interview students from the area: I am from northern Michigan and they have told me I will have an interview, probably early in September. Also, WVCOM has asked me to interview ealy (mine is 8/30) and they also speak of their preference of W. Virginia area students. So, I guess we all have a chance--even well out of the region. They also know that I would love to serve and raise my family in that region. And, I have lots and lots of rural living experience and skills. I've been a farmer, hunting guide, U.S. Forest Service Wildlife employee, and was raised on a small homestead way back in the sticks. I suppose they know that my family would be very comfortable serving in those type of areas and that I can relate to country folk.

Do you remember what date and what month?
whoa. If that was for me then I apologize for the tardiness of this reply. 😳

I applied late in 2001: Feb, interviewed in March.
