Hi everyone!

I am 31 years old and I start my pre-pharmacy class in January 2009. I am very nervous because I am not that great in Math or Chemistry, but I am willing to dedicate myself to it. I will be 33 when I finish my pre-pharmacy degree. I sometimes get worried because I think that maybe I will be too old for pharmacy school 🙁. I also worry because I live in Orlando, Florida and my whole family is here and I don't wish to relocate. My college of choice is UF College of Pharmacy - Orlando Campus. I heard that it is extremely hard to get into. I don't want to wait forever to get into pharmacy school because I know that it is very competitive. I would appreciate any advice you guys could give me.

Thank you for your time.🙂

I am nervous for you too.
Basically, your goal should be like this : 3.5 GPA, 70 to 80 or more in Pcat, a lot of Pharm Tech experience. It can take you longer because you are not good in Math and chemistry. Chemistry is the vital class for Pharmacy school. You want to do at least a B in the class.

More importantly, determination can give you some plus, but you will have a touch time. When I decided to become a Pharmacist, THAT IS IT!! no second thought, no doubt, and I worked toward it. I dont take people' opinions for my decision. I only listen to thier advices for a better way to approach my purpose.

First step you can do right now is to apply for pharmacy tech position, and ask your advisor for a plan.

As for the age thing, don't worry about it. My boyfriend just started back this fall after 15 years out of school. He's 33 and pursuing a teaching degree, so he'll be 37-38 when he graduates. It's tough on him, but he's doing it (and I'm so proud!). It's never too late as long as you've set your heart on it.

That's alright, just work hard.

PS: You probably will be considered a "non-traditional" student by other students, who tend to me not as well liked because of a tendency to question professors who are younger than them. Don't question your professors knowledge. If the professor makes a mistake or so on the chalkboard like forgetting a pair of electrons or a bond somewhere, just leave it alone.

Scenario:

Two pharmacists working next to each other, one has been a pharmacist for 20 years and the other for 3 years. They are the same age, both get paid the same etc.

Bottom line: They are BOTH pharmacists, no one cares how old you were when you graduated. To be quite honest, I think a person going back later in life has a better story.

keep up the good work!

Don't worry about the age thing. When I was checking out the student profiles of some schools, a lot of them had students in their 50's. As long as your grades are good, that will get you in the door. PCATs are important too, and once you get the interview they want to basically see you aren't a *****. Good luck!

Hey, I'm going to be starting my prereqs next fall & I'll be 32yrs old but this is what I want so I am going to work my butt off to achieve my goals. I don't think it matters how old you are, as long as you are willing to put the work into it. Good luck with everything.

I can give you plenty of encouragement.

I am 31 now and was just accepted to my school of choice.

Trust me man (woman) once you get in those classes and get rolling you will be fine.

While the kids are worrying about getting back to there text messages and whats going on that weekend you will be studying and knocking down A's like an old pro.

Seriously, the age thing is not really a factor (unless you let it be one). I took my prereqs at the local CCs in my mid 40s (check my profile for my age now). The instructors all loved me because I was focused and old enough to get their jokes.

Stay focused and you should be fine (and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it).
P-)

A lot of people who start pharmacy school are much older than you! The lady interviewing me last week just graduated from the pharmacy school and all her children were already done with college and moved out already so that gives you an idea of how old she is. She has only been practicing for 2 years.

If you have the time, money, and dedication, then go for it! :luck:

Yeah I am, Touro NY.

As others have said, don't let the age thing get in the way. I recently turned 30 and so far this application cycle, I have received 2 interviews.

If i may quote a song from a beautiful singer RIP. "Age ain't nothing but a number, throwing down ain't nothing but a thang,
This something I have for you it'll never change" Sorry had to throw that out there 😎. Trust everyone here you will be fine.

If this is what you want to do, go for it. Don't let your age gets in the way. I am 30 and applying for 2009 cycle. I feel more determined to pursue this goal than any other goals I have pursued in my life before. I think with age, comes a hunger and thirst, which will motivate you to overcome any challenges to achieve your dream. It is true for me, and perhaps other non-traditional applicants/students can relate.

Good luck!!:luck:

I'm 36 and am in the middle of my math & science prereqs. The age definitely doesn't matter. However, it's all about math. You should brush up on your algebra before starting higher math. I find the math in Chem much more complicated than calc. You are definitely up for a challenge. Before you start, find out what resources your school has for help. Our library has a "math center." If you do your work there, the tutors will spend a few minutes w/you when you get stuck. It makes getting through homework much faster. My other comment is to make sure you don't fall behind b/c the concepts in math and chem all build on each other. Get tutoring asap. Also ask around to find out which professors are the better teachers and/or graders, since you have to have a high gpa to get into pharmacy college. Good luck!

Words of encouragement are great, but be realistic and have all your resources set up ahead of time.

You should not be nervous. I am older too but age is nothing but a number. We can do anything as long as we have faith and committment!!!🙂 We can do it!!
