SA rotating internship applicant here - definitely in the overthinking stage of the match at this point so just need a sounding board.

I got an email from one of the programs I interviewed with indicating that they plan to rank me favorably. What is the best way to respond? Just a vague thank you & I appreciate the consideration?

Also, I have heard from all but one of my programs. This final program states on VIRMP that they interview all applicants. I did extern there in April 2025, so it is possible that they have decided they do not need to interview me as they already have gotten to know me a little. I think I am just stressing slightly given that other programs I externed with still wanted to do a brief interview/at the least catch up. Thoughts?
In my opinion, if the program that is saying they are going to rank you favorably, and you are highly interested in the program, I would thank them and indicate that you intend to do the same. But if this is not a program at the top of your list, I would simply thank them for considering you as an applicant. I wouldn't over think this. I did an out-elective week at a hospital I applied to back in October 2025, and I was still invited to interview. However it was not a real interview, it was us just chatting. So honestly, if you externed there in 2025 and they already know you well, they probably are not interviewing to save everyone time. I would reach out if you have any further questions about the program tho!

agree with Jayna, but also it would depend on the program and the wording. 'Mind games' is right. Do you happen to know anyone else who interviewed with this program?

When I was applying, there was one popular program that sent me an email that had me thinking they were going to rank me highly. I think they actually said something like 'We were very positively impressed by your interview and this will reflect in how we rank you' or whatever. I learned that this was a canned email they sent to a lotttt of people at the time because probably 5-10+ of my classmates got the exact same email. More than would have been a coincidence. So getting an email like this may not mean anything at all unfortunately.

Anyone who got a phone call from Ohio or Michigan State (for SA rotating), if you missed it, did they leave a voicemail indicating to call them back? I got two calls from different states (not ohio or Michigan numbers) who didn't leave a voicemail and I'm wondering if I should call them back or if it's spam 🥲

I don't think MSU does phone calls. I missed Ohio's call and they left a message

Congrats! Would love to learn who you've heard back from.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who applied to either of the programs I am chatting about here. The wording from the one who emailed me was specifically "I am ranking you favorably." Just wasn't sure what the appropriate response was, so I sent a vague but very appreciative response to avoid any VIRMP policy violations 🙂

Congrats! Would love to learn who you've heard back from.
Hi! I only applied to private practice programs given my career goals- know it's not for everyone though! I was contacted by the following programs: BP Cary, BP Pittsburgh (PVSEC), BP Spring, BP Tampa, VCA Alameda East, VCA Aurora, VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists, VCA South Shore, and VCA SouthPaws.

Has anyone heard from VSC in IL, for their SA rotating internship?

Hi I work at VERG - we are still going through them!
Just wondering if you have any updates on this? Have any interview invites been sent out yet? Should I assume if I have not heard at this point, that I have not gotten an interview? Thanks!

The surgical internship interviews have gone out. SA rotating have not yet they should be going out today!!

has anyone heard from NC state, UC Davis, Cornell, Redbank or AMC for surgical residencies?

Are there any other Canadian applications out there applying to US internships? Just worried and unfamiliar with the work visa requirements and I don't know if US internships typically help you with that sort of thing or if it's all up to the applicant!

Message me, I am a Canadian who did both internship and residency in the US.

Does anyone know if academic rotating internships are still sending out interview invites (specifically UW Madison, UF, and UIUC)? I haven’t gotten any emails but know that some people have received invites. Thank you!

Do programs typically email with a letter of interest at some point before ranks are due? I saw on last years VIRMP thread that people were getting interest emails (from academic institutions mostly I believe). Just wondering if anyone has got any already or knows anything more about this.

Last year, during the week that rankings were due, I received interest emails from several academic institutions that do not conduct interviews, as well as most of the programs that I had already interviewed with. These emails were primarily to express continued interest and to see if you have any questions before final ranking.

Is it recommended that applicants send their own interest emails to programs before ranks are due?

Any thoughts on the NCSU SA rotating program? I feel like I haven't heard much about it except they work their interns extremely hard but they are well-supported.

Following! I have the same question - specifically for the Zoo/ECC rotating program

I would also like to know about UF! I also heard from a current rotating intern that UIUC only invited ~70-80 applicants to interview, but ofc that's more of a rumor, not official!

Had anyone heard university of Minnesota for surgery residencies?

Curious who may be applying for radiology internships or residencies?

Does anyone have any good advice for how to pick between academic vs a well known private practice for a SA rotating internship? I feel like it’s hard to know how I will best learn in a SA rotating and would appreciate other considerations beyond the case load since that’s the biggest obvious difference for me. Any input on how you felt about your programs if you’re a current SA rotating intern? I’m just seriously struggling with my rank order :/

i feel like one thing to consider is your career goals, for example im doing an SA rotating to get more knowledge/experience before working in private GP so im focusing on private practice internships, but if you're someone who wants to pursue academia or a rlly competitive specialty maybe an academic internship would be better to give you more opportunities for research and see more complicated cases.

I've only done a PP rotating, but I felt the medicine was practiced in a much more practical way than what you see in academia. I didn't really think about it that way at the time, but in hindsight that was really important for me, and I never wanted to be in an academic environment at any point post-school. Some people just want to stay in an academic environment though. If you don't like teaching or don't want to deal with students all day, I would avoid the academic programs though. Part of your job as an intern in a teaching hospital is to teach, and that can be difficult when you're also trying to learn how to be a doctor yourself.

I do agree to some extent that academic programs are more highly considered, sometimes. It is also sometimes easier to stay in academia through your specialty training than it is to leave and try to get back in. So if you have your sights set on an academic residency, it might make more sense to do an academic rotating.

I just got an interest email from Michigan State. Has anyone received anything similar from CSU?

I also just got one from MSU. have not heard from any of the other academics. My understanding is that the interest emails will begin to trickle as the rank list due date approaches.

Asking for advice: I had several interviews ~1 -1.5 weeks ago during a super busy rotation (ER + soft tissue) and was not able to send thank you emails after. Is now too late/would I look like I'm not prompt/organized, or is it more better late than never? Not super important, but thought I'd ask :3

Following cause I haven't sent any since I thought I was going to be a bother and now I'm worried lol

I’m a 4th year in the match for a SA rotating, with my goal to specialize in surgery! Does anybody have any insight into CSU vs UF vs Redbank vs UG vs NCSU (or or others) for which you think would set someone up better for residency? CSU is my #1 ranked right now.

I wouldn't worry much about thank you emails. While it's nice that candidates take time to do this, we aren't moving anyone up or down on our rankings based on whether or not they send a thank you email.

The most important thing is to laugh at my jokes during the interview.

Has anyone heard from UIUC for surgery residency?

Anyone gotten any more interest emails for small animal rotating internships? I got one from Michigan State, but haven't heard from any of the other programs I applied to.

Honestly I’m assuming they will start to all roll out in the next week. But I haven’t heard anything either.

Did you hear from Michigan on Wednesday like the other posters in the thread? Just wondering if emails are still rolling out

For NCSU was this the regular rotating you heard from? When did they contact you?
