VMRCVM c/o 2018!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I lived at Windsor Hills my senior year in undergrad- I needed a place to allow pets. It is very quiet place, and I know a few vet students live there. A bit pricey, but I think it was worth it living there.

VA IS alternate....keeping my fingers crossed! Kinda bummed though. I'm guessing the IS waitlist doesn't move too much...

For current students: can you tell me any things that you don't like about the school/program?

Hey guys, I was accepted IS and definitely looking forward to meeting everyone. Its so interesting to hear all of your stories and how you've all gotten this far!

Not really a complaint, but I always thought the grading scale for classes here was a little weird. Instead of going by 10 points, they go by 9, so <91% is a B+, <82% is a C+, <73% is a D+, and <64% is an F. Everyone is graded on the same scale so it really doesn't matter, but there you go.

Hey! So I was just accepted, my first year applying and I have only been to VMRCVM once for the interviews... also don't know anyone who has gone to VT :/ any suggestions on where to start looking for affordable but not scary 1-bdroom apartments? Thanks!

Congratulations!

I'm going to second WTF with Windsor Hills. =) My husband and I live in a 1 bedroom + den currently with our two pups, and we've been there for the past two years; I shared a three bedroom with some friends there my final year of undergrad as well. Their prices have gone up since I moved in, but it's still comparable to the other places in Blacksburg. Their pet policies are some of the best in town (no breed or size/weight restrictions!), there's a dog park on the premises (it's not fancy - but it works 😉 ), and vet students don't have to pay a monthly pet fee (there's still a deposit to pay, though). They also have a no party policy and "quiet hours" (which are basically just a formality to make it easier to complain about noisy neighbors - it's not like there's someone patrolling the grounds looking for loud folks, haha), which makes me a gigantic loser but I appreciate that very much. There's a bus stop on the grounds, which is useless for getting to class unless you want to leave your apartment an hour early (don't bother - there are enough vet students in the complex to hitch a ride with someone =) ), but is very nice for getting downtown on the weekends. 😉 And speaking of - it's about a 15-20 minute walk to/from downtown, too! I wouldn't recommend doing it alone because it's dark, but me and my husband have definitely hiked our way home after a late night out... 😉

Scheduling is a cluster. Basically just plan to be in class from 8-5 every day, and you can't go wrong with that. There are a lot of last-second schedule changes, though, which sometimes make it to the calendar in time and sometimes don't. The poor first years got their schedule the night before classes started this semester, and last year the third years didn't have their schedule on the first day! It can be a little aggravating but like I said, you can pretty much expect to be at the school for a full 6-8 hours anyway. =)

Thanks 🙂 I've heard a lot of good things about Windsor Hills so far and might look into staying there for the first little bit at least. Unfortunately I'll either have to negotiate about my 3rd pet (small declawed cat) or "loan" a dog out to family... but that's the only thing really. It'd be nice to be close to everything too and have all those amenities.

So I was looking at some places and I saw a place called rocky acres- has anyone ever heard of that place/ have any reviews?

Honestly, no. I mean, sure, there have been minor bumps in the road from time to time, but nothing that made me wish I had gone elsewhere. I'm really happy I'm here and feel like I'm getting a quality education (which is saying a lot cuz I pay out OOS tuition) and a good amount of actual animal experiences (but I'm in a lot of food animal classes, so I get more animal time then small animal trackers do).
I may have posted this on here before, but I'll say it again. I've been told by a current UPenn instructor, who is a VMRCVM grad, that VMRCVM allows students much more hands on experience that UPenn (and some other schools) and better prepares general practitioner vets (nothing against UPenn, just the story I was told). She said that UPenn is really internship and residency focused and prepares students well to move into those positions after graduation. However that also means that the interns and residents do most of the vet work, while students stand around and watch.
I want to be a GP and I learn best by doing, so this program works for me. That in no way means I feel like I'm getting jipped on being informed of cutting edge research or that you can't get an academically focused education here. If this is your IS, you'd be nuts to go elsewhere and pay twice as much when you could get an excellent and fulfilling education here. Just my two cents, since you asked.

Thanks 🙂 I decided today for sure to put down my deposit and I hope this helps other students as well!

Wondering if everyone has made their final decision on schools or if they are still waiting to hear from other schools. For myself, I have one school left that I have not heard anything from.

Also, how many people here are accepting the offer for VMRCVM or declining for another school.

One of my coworkers was just accepted at UPenn and declined an offer in her IS because UPenn would offically be her IS next month.

My brother checked out a few places there for me while I was still in TX preparing to move (I was a lifelong BBurger, went here for both undergrad and vet school then moved away for residency, now I'm baaaack!) There was even someone on SDN I spoke with about it who lived or lives there....can't remember who though. But it seems to get good reviews.

I was just pulled off the wait-list on Friday, so hopefully I'll be joining many of you guys and girls there! I couldn't believe it...it was one of those "I told myself I wouldn't cry" moments, but yea I cried haha. If I remember correctly I've heard that most people live on their own while attending VMRCVM, can anyone add any personal experience to answer that or at least what they've heard?

Is any one going to the prospective student day? And anyone know if they invite waitlisted students as well?

They do, I'm waitlisted and I got an email about it. I'm not going though because I saw the school on my interview day.

I'm MD IS, wait listed, and I haven't received an email about the prospective student day...did everyone else get an email?

I think it depends on your personality. I have always preferred to live by myself, especially in the stressful environment of school. I could't imagine, for example, living with other vet students. It would have driven me insane to have "work come home" you know? Then again, some people loved having roomies, especially other students, so it varies.

I think prospective student day is during the annual Open House....? I didn't go the year I was accepted, so I'm not sure, but I remember meeting some newly accepted students at the open house last year (and having some beers with them afterwards🙂). If so, then everyone is invited. It's open to the public.

The open house is on Saturday (april 12) and the prospective student days are both on fridays in April. I think only the open house is open to the public.

Yeah, I got an email inviting me to both Prospective Student Days and the open house, and I'm IS waitlisted.

For those of you hanging out with us at Prospective Student's day tonight at Champs, I'll be there! My name is Vanessa, I'd say I'm the geeky blonde but there are quite a few of us, hah. All of us wearing VMRCVM or Alpha Psi shirts are there for you guys, so don't hesitate to approach any of us! I love talking about this place; I'm heading out there early to get a few drinks in me first (just finished up months of exams 😉 ), so I'll be more than eager to talk your ear off about anything.

For those of you who are hanging out with us next weekend, I'll be around then, too! =)

Can't wait to meet y'all!

Any other waitlisters get financial aid info in the mail from VMRCVM/VA Tech?

Just got off of the VMRCVM waitlist! I had just put down my deposit elsewhere and then got an email about 40 minutes later saying Joyce wanted to talk to me. I called her and she informed me they were offering me admission. I really thought I had no chance at all, like really, no chance because the MMI's were brutal and I'm sure I bombed them. But hey, I'm in!!!

Congrats! Are you IS or OOS?

Was anyone here awarded an HPS loan with their financial aid letter? I'm a bit confused about the HPS loan, was there some application I was unaware of? I filled out my FAFSA and received my letter with the amount I was awarded for the federal direct loan but nothing on the HPS, and I contacted the financial aid office who said all the HPS loans have been awarded. I was really hoping for the HPS loan.

Did you fill out your parents information (some schools require copies of their W2s and other tax forms) on FAFSA? Very few people are awarded the HPS loan and it's need-based (from what I understand), using your parents' (or parent's) income information.

Ah I see. I did fill out my FAFSA with my parents info, and they do pretty well, but I thought I made it clear on my forms that I've lived independently from them since 2009 and will be fully responsible for my loans. I've been under the poverty line for the better part of the past 5 years which I thought would qualify me, but no biggie my federal loan covers more than enough. The whole no interest until graduation thing was just very alluring 🙂.

Definitely understandable. I believe you can fill it out every year, so maybe try for next year! And yeah, doesn't seem to matter since everyone that fills out FAFSA as a professional student is automatically considered independent. The most I've seen allotted to any student is $5K/year, so while nice and every little bit counts, it won't make a super huge difference, I imagine.

Yay!! I am so happy for you! I know how much you wanted to get in 🙂 see you in the Fall!!

Well, there is literally no way I'm going to VMRCVM. I'm #37 on the Virginia waitlist. I have no clue how I did THAT badly on the MMI, but oh well I guess.

I just got pulled off the waitlist on Monday at 9 am. I am OOS and I immediately turned in my deposit. VA-MD was my only good offer I received.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of good apartments or places to live at during school. I am intrigued by Windsor Hills with their pet friendly policy and no monthly pet fees. Any other affordable options out there?

Windsor Hills is a great place to live- I lived there for my senior year in undergrad- very quiet, pretty, a bit out of the way from all the other apartment complexes... Really enjoyed it there 🙂
Allygater- I think I was number 23 on the WL last year and never got called off. I sucked at MMI's as well.

I didn't even think it was that bad! Who knows 😛 VMRCVM was my last choice of school anyway, holding out for LSU or Auburn!

So I've been hearing about a lot of OOS students getting pulled off the waitlist ( congrats!) But I was wondering if anyone knows generally how far down on the VA waitlist they usually go? I'm number 16 and I really do not think its going to go that far. I'm just curious because not having any idea is making it hard for me to make plans for next year...

I have always had the best luck on craigslist renting from actual people and not rental companies.

E.g. right now we are renting a 1 bedroom house about 10 min from campus with about a half acre of land for $550. Pet deposit was $250 for all of our animals (dog, cat, rabbit, snake) combined. Owned by an older couple who own a small business here and live down the street. Admittedly is is only 800sq feet and quite old, but it beats an apartment by a long shot.

I agree with WTF. I rent from a property management company in a privately owned duplex. I live 10-15 min from campus in a 2 bedroom with a big fenced in yard and a detached, really nice workshop for my carpenter husband, for a lot less then people pay to live in Foxridge or Windsor Hills. I really hate the realty company (Townside, FYI) and if I wasn't so happy where I am, I would use Craigslist or other local references to find a privately owned house/duplex/townhouse. Living in neighborhoods over apartment complexes mean more space outdoors and less neighbors (especially undergrads).

They treat their renters like unruly undergrads and have irritating policies. (We're married couple in our mid 30's. They know this, they ran our credit and everything.)

For example, they have a yearly inspection policy after the lease is re-signed. I have a dog that I can't fully trust with strangers in the house when I'm not there, so I have to be there every time. They're really inflexible about accommodating this, even though we pay a monthly pet rent for the dog. They are requiring that they take out of our pet deposit a fee for flea bombing the house when we move out, even though I'm a vet student who would gladly provide documentation of my dog being on flea/tick meds all year round. But when we had ants last summer, they told us that they don't provide service for "seasonal insects" and we would have to deal with the ants ourselves. They have a policy that after we move out, they will deduct a carpet cleaning fee from our security deposit, no matter that by that time we will have paid them rent for 4 years. In my opinion, a dirty carpet is their cost of doing business, which was more than covered by my 4 years of rent.
It's not really one big thing, just a collection of many small things. I realize most of them are a result of being in a college town, but if I had to do it again I would have went with a private individual to rent from. He/she would have benefited from my husband improving their property with repairs and improvements and from our steady, on time rent payments and I would have much lower blood pressure every time I have to call my landlord about something.

How did you find out your position? I sent an email to that dvmadmit address a few days ago and haven't gotten a reply... I assume I'm way down there though, hated the MMI.

That's exactly what I did, I'm not sure why they haven't responded!

Last year I was wait listed IS at VMRCVM and emailed twice after the 15th and never received a response. In my second email I included something along the lines of "if I need to take any additional steps to attain this information please let me know"...and still nothing. It was very frustrating.

That's really strange, I sent mine in the evening of the 15th so they'd get it first thing the next morning and they responded around 9am on the 16th.
