Kind of a weird question
but what if you're taking a 4 unit independent studies kind of deal class and part of that class is to do 10 hrs/wk or so of community service in a medical type setting. Is this still something you can list as an activity even though you got credit for it? The class has reading/assignments and a weekly meeting, but it also has the community service part attached. If yes, what exactly :/ Is it still volunteering since you kind of "got something" for it or is it something else?

oh and another thing to note I guess

I took the class TO be able to do this particular kind of community service as opposed to doing the community service in order to take the class.

I don't think it will count. From my understanding, Volunteering is when you do something that you don't have to do and will not get nothing in return other than experience or expanding your networking. But what hell, maybe you can separate the class from it. lol. But if the class sets you up in a particular field maybe you can get your network up and running. Credit or volunteer it is still good imo. 🙂

Yeah I would say probably not volunteering. But depending on what you are doing it could give you good experiences to talk about in your PS, essays, interviews etc

It is Volunteer, clinical in my opinion as it is unpaid service and I have seen applicants list it as such with no negative consequences. Folks list research in their experience section even if they have received college credit for the research.

Some volunteers are paid a stipend (e.g. Peace Corps volunteer) so they get "something" for their service but we don't fault them for calling it "volunteer".

That really helps! 😀
Thank you everyone 🙂
