i think its better to have good volunteer experience outside of medicine, i always wanted to tutor but never did it and i regret it. I think it's better outside medicine because there are so many restrictions on students when the volunteer in a hospital. For clinical experience i highly recommend shadowing a doc, you aren't bound by the hospital volunteer regulations and usually noone questions your presence when you follow a doc and people can't get you doing their busywork. I volunteered at a free clinic where almost all the workers were volunteers, docs, pharmacists, dentist, hygenists, nurses, students doing various things. These are experiences that will expose you more to patients and to the science and administration of medicine. It's definitely about quality over quantity. Or i guess we'll see after my interviews
