For those of you that have gotten one or two W's (withdrawal passing) or perhaps even more on your transcript... how do you think it affected or not affected your chances of getting an interview? if you did get an interview, did they specfically ask you about it? how did you get around to answering the question? do you personally know any school's thoughts on Ws?

Man, if I was you - I'd be happy with a fact that at least it's not a failing grade that could be used in a GPA.
I wish I had a "W" instead of an "F" I got for Orgo 1.
In my opinion, as long as you don't have any W's during your last year or two - you're OK. You know... dental schools want to make sure that you don't fail classes when you get in.

I hear that🙂 I got one in orgo 1 too,

1 or 2 withdrawals between the space of 4 years is not bad. However 2 withdrawals in one semester may be a red flag for adcoms because that shows how much work load you can handle. Also, if you withdraw and then retake and get an A it looks better than withrawing and then gettting a c or d. Don't worry about 1 little 'W' lol.

i had one withdrawal freshman year and it never came up at one of my interviews

I'm stuck on the same situation! on my previous thread, i asked people if i should withdraw 2 courses that i'm currently taking, and i actually did withdrew today!!! =(

based on my calculations, even if i get a perfect score on the final, there was no chance of getting A or even B+, and i really couldn't afford lowering my current GPA (my gpa is about B/B+ average). Of course, people can easily say that i can ace the final and still get B or something, but i honestly thought getting an A for the finals is impossible.

I feel really bad about withdrawing both courses, because i basically withdrew all the current courses and i know they will question about these big W's on my transcripts. Well, this is the first W's, but i just am not sure how to explain these W's when it comes to an interview, etc. Of course there was a personal reason why i couldn't keep up with the class materials and was in a risk of getting C's, but i'm afraid that dental admission committee might just think it as an excuse. how should i explain?

I am starting dental school this fall and have 9 Ws on my transcript. 5 from a community college and the rest from nursing school since I decided that it wasn't right for me. I applied to Texas schools and it was never brought up in my interviews. If you have only 1 or 2 Ws don't sweat it. I'm not encouraging it, but I have to say your DAT scores will be the most important factor.

I had one..... I was never asked about it.
One or two is no big deal. Just dont make it a habbit.

Ya, they really don't make a big deal out of one or 2 "W's" but in the case of "D" or "F", they normally do ask for explanation cuz my friend's interviewer asked her for the one "D" she got, but not for the 2 "W's" she had on the transcript.

I took a "W" in a class so that I could take it the following semester. If I hadn't I would only be taking 9 hours my final semester and wouldn't be considered a "full time student."

I had one for a scuba diving class and one for calc 3, both classes I dropped one day after the last drop day. I was never asked about it. The one time I was asked about my grades was at UoP and they asked me to explain the B's I had in undergrad.

That's interesting. Their average GPA is right around B+ and they need to know why you (with 3.9 overall) got 3 Bs.

The interviewer said he always asks about the lowest grade and lowest/highest DAT section.

I have a W in piano of all classes. I also have an F and plenty of Cs. But I still managed to land 6 interviews (applied to 13). Just be prepared to explain yourself

goodluck

I had to withdrawal from a whole semester once due to an auto accident, but my question is. Is it true the AMCAS will not calculate the attempted hours from a "W" into my GPA? So if I am trying to estimate what my AMCAS GPA will be I can not count the attempted hours for these courses? On my transcripts I know that they are listed with "0" points, but they do show "3" attempted credit hours. Im so confused, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you are truly asking about AMCAS, try here:

On this board it's all about AADSAS.

I had 2. One from PE and one from a physics class I was stupid to even try to take.

And I'd say half my interviewers were obsessed with it, and the other half didn't care 1 bit.

Just be prepared to answer why. Even if your answer is "i just couldnt handle the course".

haha sorry it was like 4am when i posted...ill check the other forum.. THANKS 😉

I had three W's, two of which was in a class for my minor. They did not mention anyting about that at any of my interviews and I was accepted to three schools. I did make a C in a math class and that is what they questioned me about. Good Luck!
