my advice is take the "w" and study hardcore for the dat instead. i have one w on my transcript and the adcom didn't seemed to care. just don't over do it. a high dat score will definately cover up that one bad mark on your transcript.

A "W" is fine. To some extent it shows that you know when you are in over your head. Applicants run into trouble when they use it as an escape hatch for any difficult course.

The one thing I would focus on in your statement is that you think you'll "most likely" do better when you retake it in the summer. Follow your logic there to make sure you aren't cheating yourself. It may be that you simply are putting too much time into DAT studying to do well in the course right now, and that's fine too.

Good luck with everything!

DAT takes precendence over GPA (to a point obviously). And one W... jesus it will be ok. Some of us have more Ws than As.... 🙄

You see, the DAT is standardized, and the GPAs are a crapshoot. Someone with a 4.0 GPA and a 15 DAT is quite easily a *******, where as there's no way someone with a 26 DAT score, no matter what their GPA was, is underqualified.

I know I have more W's than A's (at least at this point). I had to withdraw in Fall 1999 because I was in a bad car accident. I withdrew from school in 2003 because of financial hardship (got laid off from my job and I had to find another one to support my fiancee' who was also a student).

Of course mine weren't just me dropping a single class.....it was me completely quiting school for that semester. So I don't know how that would reflect.

I applaud you! this is so true! I've had the worst luck with profs while I know some friends who got B's without taking the finals! So...I do hope that DAT will give me an advantage...praying.
