Waitlist c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got an email from MS State saying the alternate list hasn’t moved at all yet but I also know at least one person IS that is declining so either they haven’t declined yet or they aren’t telling us anything until after the 15th.
Anyone else heard anything more from MSU about their rank?

I'm thinking they possibly over-accept since the initial waitlist email did say that they would notify people immediately upon a position becoming available. I also think most people wait until the week before or the week of April 15th to decline or accept because historically, the MS State waitlist doesn't move much if at all until then.

I emailed virgina-maryland today and just got my waitlist rank! I’m currently #7 on the OOS list! I emailed purdue yesterday asking where abouts my ranking is and no reply yet. I will email michigan state today as well!
I was wondering if anyone was going to email Michigan state today. The wording of their email made me unsure if I should email today or wait until tomorrow.

I emailed today just maybe an hour ago and no reply yet! I’ll post on here if I hear back! If you don’t mind me asking, what is your rank at Michigan state? 🙂

We’re all in this together y’all

I know UGA has had movement of at least 1 person for a SC alternate and mississippi state has had no movement! I’m hoping everything is just waiting to shift a ton after april 15th and that’s why it’s so slow

ucdavis hasn’t had any movement and that is not at all like the past few years so I’m nervous!!!!!!!

Just got an email from Purdue confirming if I’m still interested in attending their school if offered a spot?? They won’t be calling alternates until after april 15th! I’m sure they sent that to everyone on their waitlist!!

I noticed the facebook c/o 2024 page has ~115 people already ... seems to be an almost full class :/

Has anyone heard anything for Iowa state yet? I dont want to reach out until after April 15tb but I'm dying!!

Anyone heard anything from any of the schools? Its crickets here and it’s killing me T.T

Hello fellow waitlisters! I’m sure many of you are just as stressed as I am, given that decision day is two days away :nailbiting:. I’ve been reading sdn forums for a while now, but I didn’t plan to make an account until recently. I guess I was hoping to talk to other people in a similar situation to myself. So I wanted to ask two things:
1. So I’m on a OOS waitlist (unranked) for a US university, and I’ve seen various different rumors about how much their waitlist moves. I was wondering if anyone had any sort of general news or reassurance about this? I know it’s hard to know how much a waitlist will move since it varies from year to year, but any positive news or anecdotes might make me (and anyone else) feel better.
2. I’ve been thinking about what to do in a worst case scenario, and I feel like to improve my application to apply next year, I need to gain more diverse shadowing experience. That being said, obviously with COVID-19, we’re meant to be staying home for an indefinite amount of time. I just wanted to ask if anyone had any plans to shadow over the summer to apply next cycle, and if so, how you plan to do that with the situation we’re in?
Thanks for reading, and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The movement on the waitlist you are on really depends on which school it is! There are some schools that historically will have a ton of movement and others that don’t! I am on two waitlists so currently planning on reapplying if things don’t work out and I am in the same boat as you, I know I need to round out my experience a little with some exotics/large animals and I still need to figure out if the places I was looking at will allow that. I thankfully work at a small animal clinic which will help me add 1,000+ to my small animal experience and vet experience but I am nervous about reapplying without adding more diverse experience! I think a lot of us are in the same boat, I am debating taking an online animal course or something to add to my experiences

Other than saying, "Hope for the best," theres not much anyone can say besides tell their own wait list story. I was waitlisted at K State 3 cycles in a row and never pulled off. For the class of 2020 at Illinois, no one was pulled off the waitlist because so many people were over accepted. The next year, one of my best friends was pulled off in July.

More for future applicants than you specifically: I always tell applicants to act as if they've been rejected until they receive an acceptance. The application cycle is 7 months long. That's 7 months of grades, work, volunteering, research, blah blah blah that an applicant can really use as a replicant if things dont work out. Especially with emergency situations that can happen in people's lives at any time (whether its national like COVID or personal like an accident), you never know when you'll get into a bind and be unable to work on your application later on.

For you specifically: I do not recommend attempting to shadow. We had a recent thread where veterinarians voiced that they think it shows lack of maturity to ask to shadow right now. I think the only people who should attempt to be introduced into a new clinic are people who would be valuable members of a team, such as an ER tech for an ER that's actually hiring.

What applicants can do while staying at home, but can still put on their application for class of 2025:

1) volunteer to shop for at risk groups with an organization
2) sew masks to donate to healthcare professionals, particularly those with at risk groups (cancer centers, old folks homes)
3) take online free CE
4) penpals with at risk groups
5) I've seen people still doing volunteer visits through windows and stuff like that

Get creative with it! Theres a lot more out there people can do!

Thanks! I figured other people would be thinking about the same thing. I shadowed a local equine vet for a day last summer (it was difficult to plan out so I wasn’t able to get more hours before school started), so maybe I’ll email their office soon to see how they feel about me shadowing again given the circumstances. I just assumed that many places would not be willing to take shadows at the moment, but hopefully this will blow over before summer starts! Regarding the waitlist though, I’ve seen quite a few people say that the school I applied to blows through their waitlist pretty quickly, but I have also seen that they might over-accept to an extent (which I imagine many schools do), so I know that it’s hard to know. I guess I was hoping for general good news anyone has heard about waitlist survivors to stay positive over the next couple of days. 🙂

#12 for Davis IS & #7 for Oregon OOS
Davis waitlist hasn’t moved one bit but last year they accepted over 40 off the waitlist.. I’m losing hope 🙁

It's not even decision day yet. Have they emailed that the class is full?

Davis emailed us and said there’s only 8 spots left and 9 people who haven’t accepted/declined seats yet..

Just have to wait and see. For class of 2020, illinois didnt pull anyone from the wait list and closed the class on April 15. For 2021, someone was pulled from the wait list the week before classes started.

Yeah definitely still hopeful! But they even said it themselves this year is unlike any past year where normally 30-40 decline spots and this year it’s only 8 so far. So just a little disappointing/surprising I guess?

This may be the year we start to see in state people take the out of state debt more seriously due to the economic fallout of COVID. I feel like fewer students will go out of state if they have an in state acceptance even if the out of state school is "their dream school".

True, I know of 2 people last year who got into Davis IS and chose an OOS where they liked it better. This year I know of many who are staying IS

Do they normally have 40 people decline spots, or does the waitlist usually move 40 spots? Those are very different things!

Often when a school moves down the waitlist, often they will have to ask multiple people to fill one seat. (Because students on their waitlist may have already accepted seats elsewhere.)

Good luck!

The email sounded like usually there are about 30-40 declined spots.

They said that in the past they’ve moved all the way to number #40 on the waitlist and in the recent email they said they normally have 30-40 people decline seats.. so both? Haha

Hi! Any chances of getting off the OOS alternate list for Virginia-Maryland? I’m #15 and I know that yesterday they pulled off a couple of students, but don’t know if I still got a chance

Also, do every school send out an email stating that their class is full?

you literally have a really really good chance of getting pulled from the OOS waitlist at Mississippi State. I heard that they literally pull almost everyone off the list every year. Don't be discouraged!

I’m OOS waitlisted at Mississippi State and this is the single most encouraging thing I’ve read in weeks. Thank you for this.

You're welcome! Good luck!! I hope you hear something this week 🙂

You still have a chance!

#10 already got pulled off the list, so you're #5 now. 🙂

There will probably be some more movement later this week or next - there are usually a couple of people who don't respond to their acceptance at all, so they become automatic declines if they don't accept by the 15th.
