Like many of you, I'm currently on a wait-list 🙂confused🙂 for admissions. One of the doctors who wrote me a letter of recommendation told me that she would be happy to call up the office of admissions to put in a few words of support for me.

What are your thoughts on this? Any other words of wisdom for those of use who are waitlisted?

Thanks!

Wow that's nice of the doctor. Is she affiliated with the school at which you are waitlisted? If so, go for it. Either way, it can't hurt you to have her call.

Other advice: write a LOI, send them an update.

Good luck!

No not affiliated, apparently just eager to get rid of me in my current position (😉. I think it would be stronger if they were affiliated, but if you think it couldn't hurt...

Anyways, thanks!

I was actually wondering the same thing too. I was recently waitlisted at my top choice and I have quite a few doctors and PIs that would be willing to call in on my behalf. My concern is that if they call in, their words will fall on deaf ears since they will most likely talk to somebody who isn't directly involved with the decision making process. I was thinking about having them send in additional "LORS" that are specifically addressed to that school in addition to my own LOI (intent) and a letter indicating all recent and salient achievements/updates. What is your guys' opinion?

Although it is only based on my own experience, so take it with a grain of sale, I think a short and strong Letter of Intent sent to ONE of your waitlists can be powerful.

I think Letters of Interest scream: "I like your school, but not enough to commit." My gut tells me that those letters could actually be harmful at this stage because they assume you might be writing a "commit" letter to another school.

Content and timing are important for the Letter of Intent. And if you have been accepted by other schools, TELL them that in the letter: "I have been accepted by 4 schools and plant to matriculate to Med School X." That way you do not sound desperate and it rings true that you really want their school. (And if you are lucky enough to hold an acceptance to a higher ranked school, tell them you will withdraw from that if they accept you to their school. That really proves you love them for the right reasons -- not just ranking.)

Of course, everything you say has to be TRUE!!!

Oh, of course have people who might have influence call. Those people usually really want to be able to say: "Joe, take this kid. You are his first choice and he has told me he will matriculate to your school if accepted."

I know doctors who have gotten waitlisted students in by calling. As long as they know someone on the admissions committee who they can call directly it will probably work to your advantage if they call. If they just want to support you in general, write a letter.

in all honesty, you should just hang out until after may 15th. once that deadline hits and students are required to commit to a school, lists will start to move like a big game of Plinko (sorry...i grew up watching the Price is Right and it really is the best reference I can think of to simulate what happens with these lists)

Nothing substantial is going to happen before May 15, no matter who calls and what letters are sent in.

I like the Plinko analogy...

If you know you would go to a program, write the letter of intent and make the case why you would fit in so well! Send any updates that would help (awards, leadership activities, etc). Extra letters may not help so much...you already sent in your best, right?

Tell them you are honored to be on the waitlist! Be positive.

Waitlists can move quite a bit, even throughout the summer.

I agree that LOIntent >>> LOInterest. But one adcom dude I spoke to said he hates it when people talk about their other acceptances - it's hard to do without sounding smarmy.

I'm waitlisted at two Texas schools. Odds are there won't be waitlist movement for another month or so as the rest of the AMCAS schools finish giving out their acceptances. Should I send a letter of intent now or wait?

Also, in the letter should I tell them that I'm waitlisted at another school?

yeah, i have heard that too. but i think if it is done properly, without being braggy, it is very STRONG evidence of your intent. the strongest.

plus, you don't look desperate.

no value in telling them that, imho. can't advise on the timing issue because they are so school specific.

not to rain on anyone's parade, but last cycle, except for a handful of schools, there was very little waitlist movement. i think it has been a very long time since you applied to med school. 😳

unless you are on an adcom!!!!!!

i don't think that is true. there was quite significant WL movement at quite a few schools last year just from my personal knowledge and the WL movement thread last year had some good movement.... And we represent probably 1/10th of the population.

i would say the opposite is true, except for a few schools there is WL movement.

Yeah with the amount of schools people are applying to and the amount of acceptances people are getting, there must be wait list movement.

Also: I don't think that a letter of intent or a letter of interest really helps very much or at all. If you apply to a school, complete a secondary, and attend an interview obviously you are interested in attending school there. Schools get anywhere from 3 to 70(most somewhere in the middle) applicants for every seat in the entering class, every seat will be filled, you declaring your intentions to go there is not going to make much of a difference either way.

I would write a letter of interest. I wrote one to my top choice and literally got in the next day. Just tell them why you love the school and what you can contribute to your class.
