At what point is there a good chance an applicant will get in somewhere based on number of waitlists?

I'm on 3 waitlists and I'm waiting on 4 more decisions. When should I start/stop worrying?

I'm in the same boat. Hang in there; I've never heard of anyone with 7 IIs not getting anywhere.

Some waitlists have a lot of movement, don't give up hope!

You're not alone. At least we have a lot of interviews!

I keep telling myself it could be worse. There's still plenty of time to get an acceptance somewhere.

I'm supposed to hear back from a huge majority of the schools where I've interviewed at around Christmas. Hopefully it's not just more waitlists.

You should stop worrying immediately about everything in your life..... Hope for the best plan for the worst that's all you can do. Get off of SDN when you're worried about stuff and live life. I slowly took that advice last year but I feel foolish fot all the time spent worrying on SDN.

dont stress until you hear form the other 4, and just have a rush plan, incase you get accepted after may and you need to pack in a hurry !

4 IIs (all CA schools, started in October) - 2 waitlists, 2 pending, 0 acceptances
1 DO (only applied to one) - accepted, with a $2000 non-refundable deposit due next month

🙁 can anyone chime in on what they would do? Should I just make the deposit, since I could not be accepted anywhere else?

A $2000 non refundable deposit is just unreasonable. What would happen if you were deciding between multiple DO schools? How come DO schools are allowed to basically get away with highway robbery!?!?!

Thank you!! I seriously have no idea. I have supported myself since I was 16, and I'm working full-time paying off undergraduate loans and my own bills. I know it's better to be safe than sorry, but...

A $2000 non-refundable is absolutely ridiculous. I would consider dropping the school now, I can't imagine how they would treat you once you're enrolled and really on the hook

Can you call the DO school and ask for an extension of the deadline for the deposit?

I'm seriously thinking that, but not sure how my other interviews will pan out. But at the same time questioning if I would truly be happy here.

Just asked via email, let's see what they say...

Welcome to the heart of the medical school application cycle: hurry up and then wait. I don't know how many people realize that the application cycle usually starts from when you start working on your AMCAS and usually ends on the first day of (whatever institution) medical school. I have known people getting off of the waitlist in July and I have known people getting acceptances in early November. All you can do now (assuming you are done interviewing and everything) is hope, pray, send updates and LOI, and WAIT. It sucks, but many people are in the same rickety ding boat you are in (many others have already drowned in the sea and some have safely made it to land......pardon my getting carried away with the metaphor).

I'm honestly right here with you, and it sucks so bad. accepted at a DO school I didn't love, and have a $2k deposit coming up with no other acceptances yet. also keep in mind I have upwards of a dozen interviews, so I like to think my chances of another acceptance are decent. it's just so scary to think of the possibility and it makes me think I'm going to have to just man up and drop the money. terrible situation really. these deposits are asinine.

Surely with close to a dozen interviews, you're not going to pay that deposit?! I think you have a much higher chance than me getting in somewhere else. Probability wise, there is no way you can't and judging from your comeback story you seem like a great person so interviews shouldn't be your weak point.
I'm in the same boat, with less-than-average stats (from a shaky start), so it seems fair for schools to waitlist me rather than accept me off the bat. I have interviews at good MD schools, better than I ever imagined I would get, so it burns a little more being this close to the finish line at dream schools. I think the best thing is to be persistent at these schools we've been waitlisted at...

Now if i'll pay this nonrefundable deposit, I still haven't decided lol

The deposit at my school was $100 and that counted toward tuition. :zip:

I had FUN payin' that one

I know it's a lot but in the long run it's just some money.

You need to sit down and honestly ask yourself will I be happy at this DO school? If Yes then pay it. If No then don't pay it and reapply to schools next year. However, next year don't make the stupid mistake of applying to schools that you're not going to be happy with.

Most people will tell you MD vs. DO is not a big deal and they are the same thing which is true to some degree. One day if you're going to apply to specialties like ENT, Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery as a 4th year medical student then having a MD behind your name will definitely make a significant difference. These specialties are extremely dense with MDs. Almost everything else you'll be fine as a DO.

FYI no one start trolling about MD vs. DO because of my post. My post is strictly to help the posters understand what they are getting themselves into.

Really solid advice, thank you good sir.
