Wake Forest Post Bac

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I missed the part about writing them to bring attn to my app. For some reason I assumed it was like OSU's program and they would contact me. So I got a rejection from the med school and am just now sending an email for post bacc consideration. Because I was rejected from the school already will they not send me the 2ndary etc for the post bacc?

Has anyone that applied this cycle heard anything?

I think its too early to hear from the program yet since interview invites are sent in march and final decisions in may.

I just got a secondary request today, they said they send it to only "selected" applicants...is that true? Seems like they didn't screen at all!!

Did you get the actual secondary? I got the email that said they have received my application and that they send secondaries to selected students.....did you get this e-mail as well?

I rec'd the email about selective screening yesterday... then a few hours later i rec'd the actual 2ndary.. i applied to wf late as well.. amcas complete 8/31.. applied to wf 10/22..

Yes, i got that email at 6:30am saying that they received my application and that the secondary is sent to 'selected' applicants....then at 9am I got the invitation to complete the secondary with the secondary attached as a word doc....

Because of this timing, I was wondering if they screen at all....

I'm sure they do. If you are saying that based on your numbers, keep in mind this is a program for people who have been in a disadvantaged position or URM so I'm sure screening isn't in the strict sense of you have 3.0 and person b has 3.5 so person B gets it and you don't, esp. seeing as they used to have a 2.5 min though they've since upped it some from what it looks like with my discussion above and considering the population and sort of situation they are trying to help by their program.

In fact it is more likely a person with a 3.5 would get rejected from this program because it is designed for disadvantaged students then it is that a person with say for instance a 2.8 and 23 who fits the criteria they are looking for would.

Yes, I'm sure for the postbac, its more than just the MCATs and the GPAs...but because the decision to send the secondary was sent so quickly...i was wondering what they actually screen for...

Hi all,

Do you guys know if you have lower than a 7 in the sections if you will even get a secondary app? I want to know if I am eligible or not for the program...Thanks guys

Hey everyone
I've gotten a lot of private messags about the requirements of the program, specifically whether or not a score below 7 on a section could still qualify you for admission. The requirements of the post-bac program are mandated by the medical school, not the program. In essence, if accepted to the post bac program, Wake med is assuming that you will be a medical student here the next year. That said, wake med will not admit if a section of the MCAT is below 7. It is not a matter of the program, but rather the rules of Wake Forest as an institution.
Hope that helps and good luck!

As a former part of the program I can assure you that they screen and this post is incorrect.

Thanks guys for all the answers........Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what they look at in the beginning when they give you the "okay" to apply to the program? I didnt apply to the medical school so I had to do this before applying to the postbac program.
TIA

Hello everyone,

I am in the program and I think that they will consider your application with less than a 7 in one section, if you are strong in other areas (your total MCAT should be greater than 21). So if you can make up for a lower section score with a strong GPA and/or higher scores on the other parts of the MCAT you may still have a shot. They look very closely at these applications, so it is possible that they will see something else in your application that interests them. The bottom line is that I encourage anyone to apply even if you don't quite meet the requirements , however, you should be very close to them.

Also, last year, getting a post bac secondary also meant you were selected for an interview. I do not know if that will be the same for this year.

I hope this helps!

If last year everyone that got a secondary also got an interview, then do you know how many applicants are sent a secondary? I mean, if I get a secondary what are my chances of acceptance since only 10 are offered acceptances...

Can you please tell me what they look for when screening because I got my secondary invitation just a few hours after the initial application received/complete email? Thanks.

Hey AMNJMD
I'm a second year at Wake now and i don't think we've ever met. For those of you who asked, I believe in my year (2007-2008) they received 400 completed applications, sent out 75 secondaries, interviewed 25 and accepted 10. As far as requirements, of course anyone can apply, but realize but realize again that the standars of the program are mandated by the Medical School and not the post-bac program. I can only speak for myself but I found the program amazing and it was without a doubt the best prep for doing well in medical school that I could imagine. That said, as an admissions ambassador at Wake Forest, I know that as a medical school screens pretty harshly for secondaries and they're absolute cut off is a 7 in a section. Again apply if you are passionate and write why you think that you may have scored low and what you could bring to Wake and medicine in general. In my post bac class of 10, the lowest MCAT I recall was a 27 and that student had a seven in one section. I'm not trying to be a downer just honest abou the program. The process is expensive enough without having bad information flotaing around.

Well obviously the first thing they look for is whether or not they believe that you can do the work, ie your academic record. That is often the main "screen" they use for the secondary. Once you send in that application it is more about who you are as a person. If you all read the interview feedback about Wake you will see that we do a very informal interview. Our process is all about fit, and we really try to get to know you as a person and see whether or not that person fits at Wake. It's really hard to say what they look for but if you have any more questions please drop me a line.
Good luck to you all

Please don't be intimidated. In my year, four students didn't apply to medical school only post bacs. Had they applied they almost certainly would have been admitted. Last years post bac class had 2 23 scores so there is always variance. GPA's can vary pretty widely. Ours was right around 3.0.

oh ok i see, my mcat isnt too shabby, its my gpa that is hurting... 2.72.. i did get a 2ndary however. when you guys say, they received 400 completed applications, and sent out 75 2ndarys, does this mean they received 400 amcas apps that requested to be considered for the post bacc? and sent 75 2ndarys from that point?

Is it too late to apply to this program? I already submitted my AMCAS in august but didnt apply to Wake... Is it too late to add Wake to the list and apply to this program?

I know for a fact that what you stated is incorrect. I personally know someone who scored less than that and was in the same class as you.

Hi,

For the secondary, the personal statement prompt reads as follows:
.Personal Statement (or AMCAS Personal Comments if specific to Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program).

.On a separate sheet, briefly summarize your career goals and how participating in the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program will help in attaining them. Be sure to include experiences you have had which helped you make your decision. (Please limit your response to one typewritten page.).

Can you please tell me if you wrote a whole separate essay describing your career goals and experiences or you just submitted your AMCAS statement?

I am confused about what to write here because I didn't want to sound redundant and I have everything stated in my AMCAS statement.

Please advise.
..

Hi WishDr.,

I was just wondering when you submitted your AMCAS to the WakeForest PostBac program? I was simply trying to get an idea of how long it would take to know when/if I will receive a secondary. If you don't mind telling me this, I would really be appreciative. Thank you!

Hi,

You have to get a 'pre-approval' from the school to apply for the postbac by just emailing them...i got mine on Oct 2nd '09, so I submitted my AMCAS probably the same day or next day.....i received an app received email on Nov. 12th and then I received the secondary invite email a few hours later on the same day....so i guess it takes a month and a half since ur AMCAS to get a secondary....

i hope this helps....and just a FYI: all materials including secondaries are due on Dec. 15, 2009.

G'luck.

Thanks so much for the response WishDr. I guess I have a while to wait because I received my pre-approval from the postbac program the first week of Nov. and sent the AMCAS the same day. I really appreciate your response, it really helped me🙂

Hi everybody, I sent my app in mid Nov after I found out about the Program and received pre-approval. Their site reads "...If applying only to the Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program, complete and submit an AMCAS application, selecting Wake Forest Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program by December 15" ...so it would suck if everything was due on the 15th (as posted above) because I am yet to receive the Supplemental packet. :/

yeah all the dates being thrown around are slightly confusing.. I remember that you had to file your amcas with the wake by nov 1.. then i read that you had to get pre approval before even sending your amcas.. i just sent my amcas b4 the 1st of nov and was rejected by the school.. sent the email to the post bacc.. they emailed me back and said to wait to get reviewed.. received the 2ndary, the 2ndary said all materials are due by dec 15. It also encouraged people to apply early. whats funny is that seeing as to how they dont grant interviews until march of next year, and the deadline is dec 15, i dont see how applying early helps.

I Agree!...I almost missed the deadline because I knew they interviewed in March and then accepted the 10 student class in May so the deadline should be around Jan or Feb...but its Dec.15th!!! I barely got everything in but haven't received a complete email yet...

Ok, now I am confused about this Dec. 15th deadline issue. I am only applying to the post-bac program and the website currently states:
  • If applying only to the Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program, complete and submit an AMCAS application , selecting Wake Forest Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program by December 15. Pre-approval is required and obtained by sending your AMCAS ID to the office by email and asking for approval: [email protected]
  • Upon receipt and evaluation of the AMCAS primary application, notification will be sent regarding your status. Post Bac Premedical Program secondary applications are selectively sent and ask for two( (2) letters of recommendation, a $50 non refundable processing fee and a 2x2 color photo, which is optional.
So in reading this it would not make sense for the secondary applications for Post-Bac program to be due Dec.15th if that's when the AMCAS is supposed to be submitted by to the Post Bac program. I'm a little concerned that people who have received Post-Bac secondaries have a due date of Dec. 15th...does any one have any updates about this? thanks for any input!

I just received the Supplemental packet yesterday (12/28/09) with a note to have it back to them in exactly three weeks. It is true as reported that the packet has a Dec 15 deadline but I guess the make exceptions. ..Keep 'em crossed! ..:xf: ..😛

Hi Aquanaut,

Thanks for the response...I'm actually away from my home until Friday so I'm hoping to have something in the mail when I get home. Congratulations on being selected to receive a secondary and best of wishes for your acceptance. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed, lol.

Its funny when you look thru the history of these threads.. They don't start picking up steam until around mid feb when interviews go out.. Its a while before then but it will be an interesting time..

There are abt 10 spots at wake..25 at drexel.. 30? Or so at gtown gems.. And 30? At ohio state.. Im not sure how many at meharry.. It seems most of us should end up somewhere.. But with probably around 300 unduplicated applicants.. That leaves a quite a bit....

Just a brainstorming ramble.. Good luck everyone

Which one is at meharry? I've never heard of that one before...

Meharry's is similar to GW's Post Bac. You cannot apply to the program, you have to be selected after your app is reviewed.
..I hope that clears it up a bit.

Has anyone received any correspondence after submitting your secondary application (i.e. confirmation for receipt of all materials)? If you have, can you please state the dates of when you submitted your application and when you heard from the program (post submission)?

Thanks!

I submitted my secondary application and all other materials a week before the Dec 15th deadline but had not received any correspondence from them...so I gave them a call today to check the status....they said my application was complete and was currently 'under review'....

I guess they are not sending out 'complete' emails and just reviewing the apps...I hope I get an interview...crossing my fingers....

I just got my app today. I plan to have it in their office by Friday.

You think I have a viable shot? Or do they just want my money?🙁

When did you submit your initial app? Thanks and good luck!

They received my primary back in November. I got an email from them asking me if I'd be interested in the program late late December.

I just hope they give me a chance. Sounds like others are already being reviewed and I'm behind.

If I haven't gotten a secondary packet from WF.. Should I still be keeping hope alive or was I just not selected for the second round?

I would call the office, since February is already fast approaching to check if they have received your primary application/request to apply to the post-bac program. Regardless of what it is, you deserve to know your status at this point.

anyone know when we should hear about interviews?

On their website they say that the interview invites go out in March so coming up soon.....and they pick the 10 student class in May.....

I'm not sure if that has changed...you should double check....

Does anyone know if they look at your primary application when they're selecting for interviews? Or do they mainly focus on the secondary?

What other programs did you guys apply to? uconn, ohio etc? and if so, have you heard back from any of them?

I'm not a CT resident, and the impression I got about the UConn program is that you should really be a CT resident to apply. I got rejected from Ohio State, so no go there. 🙁 I applied to Wake Forest...haven't heard back. I would like to apply to the UC PostBac program (CA resident). And then I am also still applying straight to MD programs as well. So I've got a few irons in the fire.

How about you?

No word yet... Not at least from Wake Forest.

I submitted everything late November/early December.

Good luck to all!
