Minor: N/A
Minority? No
Reapplicant? No
Nontrad? No
Shadowing Experience: 140 hours with a general dentist. I am planning to shadow specialists, such as ortho and perio, during the summer.
Volunteering Experience: 154 hours volunteering with UCSD PDS Free clinics and ongoing, 87 hours with the San Diego Food Bank, currently, but I'm still continuing to volunteer there until my graduation
Employment: Currently chairside assisting for my general dentist two days a week (900-1000) hours. I was a barista during my first and second years, but I only worked full-time in the summertime.
Research: N/A
Other Extracurriculars: I did lion dancing for the Lunar New Year during my senior summer in high school, up until my third year in college. Basically, performed at special events like restaurant openings, weddings, Lunar New Year parades, etc. I also taught newer members how to perform in a lion costume and execute specific stunts. I can't exactly count the number of hours but I would estimate around 300-400 hours.
I was also a flyer lead for my PDS club for about two quarters. I also distributed and created membership kits (basically a bag of dental goods) to new members for about a year.
Have you volunteered/shadowed/attended events at any dental schools?
- I participated in a 5-day UDM externship during the summer, where I shadowed various specialties at the school and participated in some of their classes. I met the faculty as well.
Relevant Honors or Awards: N/A
LOR type and strength:
One from my general dentist(very strong), I have one strong letter from my microbiology professor, and I'm still waiting for my other chemistry professor to write me a letter right now.
Misc Info/Things not stated elsewhere/Red Flags:
My GPA was pretty bad during my second year. I was averaging Bs and B-, and I had one C+ in O Chem, which brought my GPA down to about 3.2 at the time. I was dealing with a family loss at the time and juggling ochem and physics along with their respective labs, which wasn't ideal. I've been trying hard ever since to bring my GPA back up in my third and fourth years through my upper-division courses, and now it's around 3.5. On my transcript, it says my upper-division GPA is 3.69, so hopefully that counts as an upward trend. I'm concerned that my lack of research experience may put me at a disadvantage compared to schools like UCLA and UCSF, which are research-intensive.
