Hi everybody,

I recently took my MCAT last month for the first time and just got my score back. I've been working on my primary application for the past month, and I submitted my TMDSAS (applied to all the schools), but I'm still working on my AMCAS/ AACOMAS, and I was planning on submitting it either today or tomorrow. I'm feeling a bit demotivated as my score was lower than what I was expecting and not what I was getting on my practice exams (worked my way to 512 on the last one). I was wondering what my chances are of getting into a school this cycle (I'd love to go MD but either would be fine) or if I should withdraw my application, retake my MCAT again, and take a gap year instead. I feel like my essays and experiences are strong, so I was wondering if that would make up for my score as well. I was also looking for MD or DO school recommendations to add to my school list if I would be able to apply.

Some of my other stats:

  • Texas Resident ORM, 3.9 GPA
  • 503 MCAT (126/126/125/126)
  • 5 leadership positions in organizations on campus (2 of which I will be continuing into my senior year)
  • 650 clinical hours
  • 150 research hours (a lab I started working on last year and will continue into next year)
  • 56 hours shadowing in three different specialties
  • 335 volunteering hours (clinical and non-clinical) split into (140 non-clinical + 195 clinical)
  • I also have three part-time jobs, which I'm going to continue as well
I just want to see if I have a shot at some MD schools or if they are going to screen me out right away bc of my MCAT regardless of my stats.

Your MCAT of 503 is not competitive for any OOS MD schools. Apply broadly to DO schools and include these:
Sam Houston State
TCOM
UIWSOM
OSU-COM
TUNCOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
CUSOM
VCOM (all schools)
PCOM
LECOM
WVSOM

Definitely a complicated situation. Frankly, I don't think you should have applied this year. This all seems rushed with your MCAT score and the hours you have listed. It's ultimately up to you and your values. If you continue applying, you MIGHT get in, likely to a lower-tier MD or some DO school. If it's in Texas, great. You'll be a young doctor with low debt (given in state tuition). But if you put in a stronger effort next year, your chances will be a lot stronger, you MIGHT get your pick of medical schools and your likelihood of MD and competitive specialties increases dramatically.

I wouldn't say you need to withdraw your application due to the MCAT 503, but definitely don't waste any time applying on AMCAS as a Texan.
Only 15% of Texans get accepted to OOS med schools, and those are the ones with MCAT 516 or higher and or other strong app features like research, publications, etc.
Carry on with all your TMDSAS schools and decide whether you will also apply on AACOMAS.

Don't withdraw your app just yet. Consider adding schools that are more forgiving of lower scores.
