Hello! I am a 21 y/o Texas resident, and this will be my first time applying. I decided to apply only to my two instate schools this cycle- Texas A&M and Texas Tech. I need an extra semester to graduate from undergrad, and I would only leave my degree incomplete to go to an instate school (I am about 7 credits behind as a result of transferring universities). If this cycle doesn't work out, I will then apply to out-of-state schools next round.

cGPA: 3.83
Science GPA: 3.76
Last 45: 3.67
TMDSAS doesn't calculate the last 45, so I calculated it by hand (I didn't apply through VMCAS since I wasn't applying out of state).

GRE: Didn't take it- neither of the schools consider it.

Veterinary Experience:
- Veterinary Assistant in a small animal practice - 1300hrs (I was also working in kennels, so this is the division of hours that was spent with the vets during those two years.)
- Shadowing large animal veterinarian - 170hrs
- Veterinary Technician in an exotic animal practice - 400hrs (temporary tech position)
- Parvo ICU Veterinary Technician - 330hrs (also a temporary tech to help with summer overflow- located in a shelter)
- Shadowed an ICU vet - 4hrs

Animal Experience:
- Kennel Technician in a small animal practice - 1500hrs
- Rabbitry Owner - 1600hrs (I had a rabbit breeding business for several years. I probably undercut my hours, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't including the business side and just the caretaking)
- Pet sitting - 100hrs
- Small animal and exotic care at exotic animal practice - 40hrs
- Service dog training - 20hrs
- Equine Care at a Ranch - 10hrs
- Alpaca caretaking at Ranch - 6hrs

Research Experience:
- Dairy Cattle research - I worked with a professor at my university on a dairy cattle project. I was only needed for a semester. It hasn't been published yet. - 80hrs

Awards/Scholarships:
- Honor roll (4.0 semester x3) and Honors program
- Also have 4 awards from art competitions I included for non-academic awards.

Extracurriculars:
- Art Club (HS) - 3 years, 150hrs (president my final year, under leadership tab)
- Women's Club (HS) - 1 year, 72hrs
- Business side of the rabbitry (data keeping, social media, client communication, photos, etc.) - 3 years, 480hrs
- Student Government Org. - 1 year, Officer (under leadership tab)
- Served on my community college's governance council as a student member (under leadership tab)
- Pre-Vet Organization General member - 1 year, 64 hrs (Officer this year, under leadership tab)
- Service Dog Organization General member - 1 year, 45 hours (different from service dog training)
- Volunteered for SXSW - 55 hrs
- Mobile food truck - 4 hrs
- Note taking (through University Disability Center) - 37 hrs

Employment:
**TMDSAS didn't ask to specify the number of hours
- Office Clerk (2 years)
- Shoe store (4 months)
- Seasonal sales associate

LOR:
- DVM I worked with for 2 years
- Large animal DVM I shadowed
- Exotics DVM I worked with as a temporary tech
While I didn't work for some of these DVMs as long as others, these letters were all offered to me, so I feel strongly about them.

Concerns:
I am worried about the last 45. I had a rough transition between schools, but I don't have anything lower than a B on my transcript. I reflected on this transition in one of my essays for TMDSAS (I had a lot of personal issues also occur during my school transition). I am working on adding some more large animal hours, and I will have some specialty hours if I apply again (I began shadowing a specialist after TMDSAS closed). I also would like to have some more volunteering hours which I am working on. I also don't really see Texas Tech being a school that would accept me, but I figured I should apply since it's instate.
Because of my specific situation, I am not super freaked about applications. If this doesn't work out this cycle, I finish my last semester of college and get a degree+gap year before I apply again. Good luck everyone!

To be perfectly honest, I think your concerns are a little unfounded. If you have good LoRs and strong personal essays, then meh. Honestly Tech's decisions make very little sense to me so I think, depending on your goals, you're probably unlikely to get in, but there are people who want to do small animal who are attending Tech.
You have diverse experiences, a pretty good GPA, and lots of extracurriculars. I think you'll be fine.
If not, I'd consider applying out of state. TAMU is odd I'm not bitter but in my opinion you'll be very attractive to different schools.

I agree with your comment on Tech- they are extremely odd. Their supplemental alone made me somewhat regret applying, but I figured I would just do the supplemental anyways.
I definitely plan on casting a larger net to the out-of-state schools if I don't get into either school this cycle. I figured that I may not look like as great of a candidate to out-of-state schools if I didn't have my bachelor's complete (next cycle I will- 7 credits behind due to transferring). Thank you for your encouraging comments!

Hello, I applied to 17 schools this cycle (2nd time) and I’m wondering what my chances of being accepted into a vet school are. I applied with an overall GPA of 3.53, and had a 3.8 GPA in regards to the last 48 credits. I have experience with small animals, exotics such as wolfhybrids, and large animals. I have over 200 hours of volunteering at an animal shelter, 2000+ In regards to shadowing and working in a vets office, and 2 years of experience of working outside the veterinary community. I also completed an internship at a wildlife sanctuary, and started up a Soriorty at A&M Commerce, currently raising a wolfdog, and volunteer with McKinney lions organization weekly. My LORS were from veterinarians that I have worked with for several years, professors, and my previous boss.

I applied to A&M, Texas Tech, Iowa, Kansas, Lincoln (interviewed), Long Island, Purdue, Michigan, Midwestern (interviewed), UPenn, Ohio, Arizona (MMI waitlisted), WesternU, Virginia/Maryland, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Illinois’s (rejected).

If anyone could give me any insight I would really appreciate it.

I would make your own thread under the WAMC sticky :)

Also, to any Texas in-state applicants, I recommend throwing LSU into the mix because I hear about soooo many students from Texas being rejected by A&M but get into LSU. I think it's because LSU is very generous with their GPA calculations, so could be worth looking into. Best of luck!

That’s what my daughter did. A&M has a “what did you do to improve since your first application”. She was a welted because she worked it hard. Tech really wants rural large animal. Your stats are strong though. If not first try, second should be no issue. Keep building your resume. Good luck!!
