Hi everyone,

Trying to make the switch from phd to medicine.
Italicized=planned for this year.
Do I have any chance next cycle for MD if I do all this, i.e. how strong is the app assuming this is what it will look like?

  1. 3.78 (both cGPA and sGPA)
  2. 510 (128/128/126/128)
  3. CA
  4. Asian male
  5. Top tier
  6. (i) Just starting full-time work as a CNA, will work for a year by the time of next cycle
  7. Doing research about machine learning applied to endocrinology. 1 published paper (1st author) and (ii) 2 more expected during my phd program*. Attended 2 conferences, of which I presented at one. Also have 2 other ancient papers.
  8. May or may not have shadowing depending on demands of full-time work. If I do, it will be for (iii) infectious disease, HIV, and/or endocrinology.
  9. Food bank (50 hours)-- packaging and delivering food to people with diseases, Underserved clinic (200 hours)-- helping create patient portal accounts for patients if they so desired. (iv) about 60 more hours at another underserved clinic by time of app.
  10. Teaching assistant (3 yr) for undergrad statistics in life sciences; other activities include Dragonboat/Christian club/Symphony Orchestra
  11. No awards to report
  12. Nothing of interest. (slightly disadvantaged socioeconomically and demographically) (v) I need to take a biochem class
  13. Letters of rec: math professor, (vi) biochem professor, physician co-author, clinical supervisor, shadowing physician

Hm, I'm not jumping for joy with you app. Low volunteer, ok MCAT but not great for someone with a PhD and ORM, good research which is to be expected for PhD. For you especially, your chances will really hinge on how your app is put together because I could see a situation where these metrics could be well packaged with a strong story, and a situation where you broadly fall short.

Obviously, all CA state schools. Apply broadly OOS. Sounds like you have time, start doing interesting volunteer work or some activity to help your application pop. That, and make sure to get your pubs.
