Also forgot to add I got 2 LOR from science professors, 1 LOR from non-science professor, 1 LOR from MD at free clinic, and 1 LOR from lab PI.

Toledo admits few non residents with no connection to the state or region. You could also remove South Carolina Greenville, Indiana and Illinois. You should receive several interviews from the other schools on your list. You could add Hackensack, NOVA MD and Penn State.

Describe your interest in rural health. Were you raised in a rural community? Otherwise, what other community service opportunities (non-clinical) have you participated in that took you out of your comfort zone (not teaching/tutoring)? I know about Duke's particular emphasis on being involved with community.

Was raised in a rural community - my personal statement emphasizes that heavily (talk about how it has shaped me as an individual, and how I want to return to it to address lack of access to care while also emphasizing research). I also volunteered about 300 hours in a food bank linked with the clinic I volunteered at.

All your in-states including the DO programs in NC/SC should be in play for you. How many schools on your list have rural health tracks? Have you applied to NHSC or been part of any pipeline or career promotion programs before college such as through an AHEC? Are you considering HPSP? Get rid of any other schools in dense urban areas unless there is a specific program in rural/underserved healthcare. Any schools with AHEC programs should be in play. Stay close to home and pick MD programs/campuses in neighboring states (SC, VA, TN) with a solid commitment to train rural health providers.

Is there an advantage to apply to SC schools if I'm from North Carolina? I know the three are MUSC, USC Greenville and USC Columbia. I've heard MUSC barely takes OOS and does not favor being from NC but don't know if thats true. Not sure on the two USC schools, but @Faha listed above to remove USC Greenville.

For TN, what schools would you recommend? East Tennessee State has strong rural mission, but extremely OOS unfriendly. Meharry is a HBCU, which I don't think I would have an advantage applying for. U Tennessee is also OOS unfriendly, and Vanderbilt is private and does not seem to have commitment for rural health providers.

I'm applying to all applicable VA schools in my range.

Have not applied to NHSC or been a part of programs through an AHEC.

For SC schools, definitely look up the MSAR, but also check on whether those schools have rural health programswhich you could fit with. If not, then don't include them. I would reach out to Quillen/ETSU. They may be OOS unfriendly, but if you argue you have the background and desire to work in rural medicine in Appalachia, you should reach out to them to see if you would be a good fit. The most recent class profile still says they took 13 OOS in their 78-person class (2022).

Thread merged. My trimmed list above. Many of your schools take few OOS students and/or are unrealistic with a 512.

Add Quinnipiac, West Virginia, Geisinger, MCW, Oakland, Wayne State, Creighton and TCU.
