300+ hours of volunteer at Emory University Hospital

Non-clinical volunteering:

300+ hours of volunteering through college club involvement providing cultural, educational and emotional support to adopted children (since freshman)

Leadership:

300+ hours of college club as co-president (leading and organizing cultural and educational care to adopted children, fund raising ~$20,000+ and philanthropy activities)

Research:

• 400+ hours of neuroscience research at Mayo Clinic, One 1st author publication in top peer-reviewed journal (in Jan 2026), two posters, one award
• 700+ hours of undergraduate research on pediatric neurology, a thesis and one manuscript (1st author) in process

You seem to be double-dipping on your leadership accomplishment as part of your non-clinical volunteering, which doesn't really address service orientation (food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation). Consequently, your application may be screened out at many schools due to a lack of such community-oriented activities.

Many of your activities center on children, which is very common among premeds. I would need to see how you stretch out beyond your comfort zone working with adults in need.

Thanks so much for your reply, but based on the feedback from MrSmile12 above, it seems I may not mission fit to community service oriented schools like Alice Walton, Wayne State etc, and quite some of the above are low yield schools, do I have a chance this cycle, or need to take a gap year? In addition, some are new schools, is it worthwhile trying not-well-established schools?

thanks for the feedback, how should I differentiate the volunteering activities from the leadership accomplishments? should I avoid service-oriented schools, or start volunteering right now in the area of what you mentioned above till next Aug? As my career goal is to be a pediatric neurologist, that is why i spent more time on this area, but i did spend quite some time like 40% on adults, including my clinical volunteering in wound care, clinical work in ICU, and research/publication at Mayo.

Well, if you eliminate low yield schools, new schools and schools where your mission fit is not ideal, then there is not many schools left to apply to. You would benefit from 150+ hours of non clinical volunteering such as food bank, homeless shelter, etc. before you apply.
