Hi everyone, I'm a Michigan resident currently planning to apply to all MD/DO Michigan schools (except Umich due to their high average MCAT). I need some help creating a realistic OOS school list. Thank you in advance!
  • My cGPA is 3.92 and my sGPA is 3.93
  • My first MCAT score was a 499 (125/123/125/126) and the latest attempt is 504 (123/125/126/130)
  • Michigan resident, female, Indian, Asian
  • I went to a Mid-tier Michigan university, Public Health major
  • Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)
    • Medical Assistant (paid) - 600 hours, might continue
    • Hospice volunteer (unpaid) - 40 hours, ongoing
  • Research experience and productivity
    • Participated in a research lab for 1 year, no pubs, 1 poster presentation, and honors thesis - 300 hours
  • Shadowing experience and specialties represented
    • Dermatology - 40 hours
  • Non-clinical volunteering
    • Prison Education Project (tutored inmates) - 40 hours, ongoing
    • Crisis Text Line - 200 hours, ongoing
  • Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
    • Worked in a tutoring center (paid) - 300 hours
    • Private tutoring (paid) - 50 hours
  • Relevant honors or awards
    • Academic scholarships, Dean's List all semesters, and was in the Honors program
Current school list:
  • Wayne State
  • Michigan State (MD and DO)
  • Oakland (OUWB)
  • Western Michigan
  • Central Michigan

Make sure all of your DO schools in the region are on your list: CCOM, Marian, MSU, LECOM at least.

Do you have any primary care exposure? What area is your MA job?

No campus involvement or leadership?

The vulnerability in your application is your non-clinical volunteering as Text Line may not involve enough face-to-face interactions compared to doing similar work as a shelter volunteer. Tutoring inmates will definitely get you some brownie points though you need a community service activity that is less "academic" as you already have quite a bit of tutoring in your profile already. Thus, you are vulnerable to getting screened out at most medical schools for lack of service orientation activities; coupled with the low MCAT, that may make your application very vulnerable in the AMCAS pool.

I suggest adding these DO schools to your application:
LECOM (all schools)
MU-COM
CCOM
DMU-COM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
AZCOM
TUNCOM
UIWSOM
CUSOM
ACOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
PCOM (all schools)
For OOS MD schools I suggest these:
Toledo
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
TCU
Belmont
Eastern Virginia
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
Albany
Vermont
Alice Walton (when it opens)
Roseman (when it opens)
