Hey everyone, I'll be applying both MD/DO this cycle as a first-time applicant, and I'm hoping to narrow my list down to around 40 schools (which sounds wild, but I know with my GPA I need to be applying pretty broadly). I have a pretty general school list put together right now, but I'd love any and all advice on whether I should be taking schools out or putting schools into my list.
MD School List (no particular order):
Apologies for the length of this post, but any input is very much appreciated!
- cGPA: 3.24 and sGPA: not completely calculated yet (nothing verified in the apps) but tentatively 3.0? My graduate GPA is a 4.0.
- MCAT: 517 (127/129/127/131)
- Florida resident and US citizen
- ORM (Asian American woman)
- Have both my BS and MPH, recently graduated from my MPH program. Undergrad major: Biology (minor was History); graduate concentration: Epidemiology & Global Communicable Disease. Currently working as a Medical Assistant.
- Clinical experience (~392 hours without accounting for current MA position; with that position & its current/projected hours, I'll have closer to 2,500 hours)
- Hospital and clinic-based internship
- lots of close patient contact and integrated physician shadowing
- helped pilot an Adolescent and Young Adult rotation all about the mental health of oncology patients while working closely with the hospital social workers
- experience in rooming and taking vitals during this internship as well
- Medical Assistant position
- taking vitals, taking medial histories, sitting in the room with patient while the doctors do their assessments, writing notes afterwards.
- part of this job is in a private clinic, the other part of this job is working in a surgical center triaging patients, bringing them back to the OR for surgical procedures, and aiding in their post-anesthesia recovery
- Hospital and clinic-based internship
- Research experience and productivity (>1000 hrs)
- (~576 hrs) Public health research (paid position)
- Conducted a scoping literature review about current provider training techniques & their implementation for special topics like maternal opioid use, cultural competence, and implicit bias.
- Led to the development of two surveys that were widespread amongst perinatal quality collaboratives in both FL and nationally
- survey data was combed, analyzed, and is currently in the process of being shaped into a manuscript that is almost ready to be submitted for publishing
- also produced two technical reports
- this position also led to a published abstract for a Dissemination & Implementation conference
- (~360 hrs) Research in a neuroscience lab (undergrad)
- worked with rats and ran them through a maze, lol
- Produced a poster that I presented at my university's undergraduate research symposium
- (~576 hrs) Public health research (paid position)
- Shadowing experience and specialties represented
- In-person shadowing (1 specialty) = ~24 hrs
- 1 specialty but three separate experiences:
- 1 Pediatrician (MD) in a hospital setting; tagged along on grand rounds and patient consultations; also attended a pre-rounds breastfeeding presentation
- 1 Pediatrician (MD) in a private clinic setting: observed patient appointments
- 1 Pediatrician (MD) in a private clinic setting: observed patient appointments
- 1 specialty but three separate experiences:
- Virtual shadowing = ~25 hrs
- program put on by a Family Medicine DO
- learned about a bunch of common ailments and how they'd present; took on sample cases and solved them in teams
- In-person shadowing (1 specialty) = ~24 hrs
- Non-clinical volunteering
- (~192 hrs) Hospital volunteering
- (~120 hrs) Volunteered at an on-campus daycare
- (~40 hrs) Service trip to Lower Ninth District in New Orleans, LA for continued Hurricane Katrina relief
- (currently about 54 hours, projected total about 310 hrs) Crisis Text Line volunteer
- Leadership
- (316 hrs) Assistant Director for a social justice/leadership retreat series; really impactful, sparked my decision to pursue MPH
- (640 hrs) Graduate TA for the core courses in my MPH program (paid position)
- (~144 hrs) TA for an EMR course I took in undergrad
- Relevant honors or awards
- Inducted into a national public health honor society that only accepts the top 5-10% of the class based on academic and professional achievement
- Inducted into another national honor society in undergrad
- Anything else not listed you think might be important
- I have a lot of other extracurricular activities that mean a lot to me that'll be on my app, including being a campus tour guide, co-creating and co-hosting a podcast for my school's subdivision of TEDx, and indoor rock climbing.
- I would reaaaally like to get out of Florida, but I know that might not be realistic. Love to be in a city setting, or at least anything bigger than a small town, lol (Chicago/Philly have always been dream cities)
- I know my GPA is one of my biggest hold-ups, but I also know that going strictly off of stats isn't a great approach
