Hey there,

I am a 25-year-old applicant, and I would appreciate some help with my application, school list, MCAT strategy, and setting realistic expectations. I graduated from T-10 Ivy in 2021 with a BA in Environmental Earth Sciences and a minor in Creative Writing. As an undergraduate, I researched climate change trends and focused on science journalism. I graduated from college 36 months ago. After graduation, I worked 4 months during the late pandemic for a nonprofit building climate resilience in my hometown. Then, I moved to Utah to work as a ski patroller (one of my passions). Then, I moved to Washington to work as a mountain guide. I returned to Utah for a second season as a ski patroller, during which I grew increasingly passionate about clinical care. I enrolled in pre-medical courses (DIY postbaccalaureate) and joined a research program at the University of Utah. Over the last year, I completed my third season as a professional ski patroller and wholeheartedly pursued the path to medical school while working full-time; I completed my pre-medical coursework, shadowed various physicians, volunteered, and took the MCAT. I am applying this cycle.

1. Undergraduate GPA at T-10 Ivy
BCPM: 3.56 (50.5 hrs... Unfortunately, my most meaningful science courses [22.00 hrs] as an upperclassman scored P/F during COVID-19)
AO: 3.75

2. DIY Postbacc GPA
BCPM: 3.85 (Human Anatomy w/lab, Gen Chem II w/lab, Fund. of Biology Lab: Cells, Genetics, Biochem, Cell Bio, Ochem 1 w/lab, Biochemistry, Ochem 2 w/lab)

3. MCAT: 511 (C/P 125, CARS 128, Bio 127, Psych 131)

4. Residence: Utah but originally Rhode Island

5. Ethnicity/race/gender/parents: White male (both parents are physicians)

6. Research experience and productivity
- 250 hrs in medical-related field w/ publication (research)
- 300 hrs in climate change field w/publication in a Journal of Medicine (research)
- 400 hrs in an earth sciences field program (research)
- 150 hrs in an engineering design project, w/a provisional patent (research)
- 300 hrs co-founder & science editor for literary magazine
- 300 hrs journalism internships w/ published articles in magazines

7. Shadowing/Clinical Observation
- 130 hrs in EM, orthopedic trauma surgery, wilderness medicine

8. Clinical experience (paid)
- 3000 hrs as a ski patroller. 50 hrs/week. In three seasons, I have first responded to 120 patients and have second responded to over 300. As a medical trainer on the patrol, I led 70 hours of training last season, teaching weekly medical workshops and skill stations during recertification refreshers.

9. Volunteer
- 300 hrs with a nonprofit in climate resilience for frontline communities (non-clinical)
- 600 hrs as a volunteer ski patroller in college (Clinical)
- 100 hrs food delivery service to underserved neighborhoods during COVID-19 (non-clinical)

10. School List (work in progress): Utah, Columbia, Brown, Cornell, Rochester, Geisel, Mt. Sinai, Colorado, OHSU, UVM, NYU, Albert Einstein, Stanford, UMass, Tufts, GW, University of Pittsburgh, Rush, Case Western, Drexel, UCLA, UCSF, UC Irvine, Michigan

I am excited to apply to a wide range of schools in different locations. I have submitted my primary application, and I am currently working on some secondary applications.

Questions: Are there specific places where my application could be stronger? Of course there are... but I appreciate any feedback. Should I retake the MCAT in early September? I know I can do better! Is there any guidance on whether medical schools will wait for updated MCAT scores? Advice on my school list? Schools to remove or schools to add?

Thank you for your time! I appreciate all the help.

Your MCAT of 511 is not competitive for the majority of schools on your list. Rush expects far more non clinical volunteering than you have.
I suggest these schools with your stats:
Utah
TCU
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Belmont
NOVA MD
Wake Forest
Eastern Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth
George Washington
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Hackensack
New York Medical College
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
UMass
Colorado
If you are applying this year you should submit your application this week and all your secondaries by early September.

Where did your parents attend medical school?

I'm okay with 3000 hours of ski patrol, especially if it all were done after college. I agree though that Rush might not find that as valuable. I would need more details on your non-clinical volunteering to discern if it hits service orientation vs. advocacy. I also don't have a sense of time: what have you done lately vs. during the pandemic.

Clearly by pushing your involvement with skiing, you should be looking at the schools that have outdoor/wilderness medicine. This would include:

Thank you for this response. My parents both attended GW. One is a physician in Emergency Medicine, and the other is a pediatrician.

Re: sense of time. I graduated from college in June of 2021. In the four months following graduation, I volunteered as an unpaid intern with a nonprofit in my hometown to help build climate resilience in frontline neighborhoods. The nonprofit could not offer me a full-time position, so I decided to change course and pursue my passion for ski patrolling. My first season as a ski patroller changed my perspective on the career I wanted to pursue as I grew passionate about emergency medical care. This started my current path to medical school. At each step, I became more and more confident that I wanted to become a physician.

My timeline:
- Nov. 2021 - April 2022 Ski Patrol
- April 2022 - Sept. 2022 Mountain Guide
- Nov. 2022 - April 2023 Ski Patrol
- May 2023 - Nov. 2023 Post-bacc student & research at the University of Utah
- Dec. 2023 - April 2024 Ski Patrol, Post-bacc student, MCAT
- May 2024 - August 2024 Post-bacc student, applications, and food service job

Re: pushing my involvement with skiing. Though my medical experience has been on ski mountains, I consider my passion for clinical care as separate from skiing. I do not want to limit myself to just outdoor/wilderness medicine because, through class and research, I have expanded my curiosity. I certainly value the field of outdoor/wilderness medicine but I aim to use my experience as a launchpad into other spaces.

Also, regarding the MCAT, if I retake the test on September 13th and score higher, do you think that would open up doors to different schools? Or would this be too late?

Thank you!

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate your guidance :) . This list is awesome and has helped me revise my current goals. To provide some more context, I submitted my primary application in early June and have already submitted my secondary application to Utah. I am currently studying to retake the MCAT on Sept. 13th, and I am confident that I can score higher. If I score higher, do you think that would improve my chances for the most competitive schools? Or, will the new score be too late to have any meaningful effect?

September is in bounds, but it might be late for the higher-tier schools you want to apply to depending on the volume of applications they receive.

Certainly any good EM program will also be a conduit for wilderness medicine, but you may be surprised at what some medical schools offer. I also presume this is a potential career direction and not your only goal.

With your background, I would keep Dartmouth on the list despite your low MCAT.
