WashU Waitlist 2006

I have not posted on here much, but have been reading the site for months. I just received my waitlist letter on wednesday and it was not the "thriver" letter. My letter is different and not nearly as optimistic as the described "thriver" letter. So there is at least two forms of the waitlist letter. Mine just says I am well qualified and asks I send in the form to remain on the waitlist. So rest easy, there is a difference.

I'm trying to decide whether to stay on it. Decision between WashU and another school would probably come down to money and I'm guessing us waitlisters are out of the running for merit awards.
 
Another thriver here in NYC. Received today in the mail. A bit bummed to be on another waitlist (5 in all so far), but happy that I wasn't rejected. Oh well... there's still hope i guess 🙂

that letter is so optimisitc! what a tease. yes SDN is definitely serioulsy skewed but they must send it to a decent couple hundred cuz there are like 30 thrivers on here already. alas. i am on columbia's waitlist too and it is all such a tease. :scared:

i've been doing lots of financial aid apps tonight, and i started on the one for wash u...but i'm confused about our having to enter budget information. do we just copy stuff from the guidebook with 2005-2006 figures? or will it automatically enter it for us?

I was confused too, so I actually called the office and asked. 🙂 The lady said that, first of all, filling out this portion is just to get the student thinking about budgeting for next year and is not considered when they determine your aid package. They just want you to be aware that, due to your individual needs, you might need a bit more money than they can award to you, since your total cost of attendance is determined from the averages. She said that a lot of students just enter the average amounts.

Thriver here too... I wish I had some idea of my actual chances of getting in... wash u is definitley my first choice, but I think it's more realistic that I'll get off the waitlist at my close 2nd choice. I'm having a hard time deciding where to write a letter of intent because I am afraid it might be a 'waste' if I wrote it to wash u because I think I'm less likely to get in there, whereas it could make a big difference at my #2 school.

I know how you feel. I now think that I've wasted my letter of interest on WashU...I hear from U of Washington today, and i haven't sent them anything since my interview. I've spent all my time and effort on WashU, and I may have blown it at UW, where I probably had a slightly better chance. Ah well. UW will be decided for me today.

wah!! Got the unranked waitlist at UW, which historically means no-chance. So now all my eggs are indeed in the WashU basket. But there'll be no more news for a while. I can't wait until may 15, but I am going out of the country may 18-june 4, and I keep fearing a phone call in my absence, and being passed up because I didn't answer! Wah! Good luck everybody!

i have the same fear!! i'm going to be in spain in may and india in june. how do we handle that...did you talk to the admissions office? 😕
 
I just got the waitlist, and I'm not even a thriver :meanie: It wasn't my top choice, but it still hurts my feelings...
 
hey...so i have a question...if we are on the waitlist and want to write a letter indicating interest, who should it be addressed to? Is it Dean Dodson? or just the admissions office? thanks.

I'll be in India in June too 🙂 I was thinking about attaching something to the waitlist form to let them know I'll be gone and that they can contact my dad if they need to get in touch with me... Maybe you have a family member or a friend who could serve as a contact person?

I addressed my letter of intent to the Committee on Admissions. I felt like I had to win everyone's vote, not just Dean Dodson. At first I thought about addressing it to Dean Dodson, My interviewer's name, and the rest of the Committee on Admissions, but I felt it left the rest of the Committee as a second thought.

The information packet from the secondaries said to address correspondance as the following:

CORRESPONDENCE AND COMMUNICATIONS: Please keep your personal information up-to-date. This includes address, phone, e-mail and academic credentials. Washington University School of Medicine encourages applicants to communicate by mail, FAX or e-mail. Addresses are:

Committee on Admissions
Washington University School of Medicine

So, not trying to break rank, I followed it letter by letter (and number!).
 
are any of the thrivers going to try and make it to wash u's 2nd visit wknd or ask if they can? cuz i feel like it'd be a tough decision to make if i do get in and i dont visit... anyone know when wash u's 2nd visit is?
 
The Revisit weekend is April 7-8, i.e. next Friday and Saturday.

I doubt they'll let us thrivers come to the second look, at least not officially. I hear that WashU really wine and dine the accepted students, so I doubt they'll want to spend time and $$$ on us. boohoo.

but....i live in st. louis, so I'm not entirely against crashing the 2nd look weekend. 🙂 I can take the opportunity to offer my 1st born child.
 
Maybe if we crash it and make the weekend a living hell for all the accepted students attending, they'll end up going other places. Now the adcomm will have to take way more than the 50 or so applicants off the waitlist. :idea:

Anyone know where the 2nd lookers will be staying? I got some flaming bags of poop I can deliver....
 
Ahumdinger, I'm cheering for you. You've been the SDN WashU insider/knowledge database for this cycle. When I see that you've posted in any WashU thread, I know that something useful might just have been posted!

thanks! I really appreciate it! my boyfriend is a rising 3rd year, and so I feel like I know the school better than some of the 1st years. I know we all want to get in, but I wish there was some way to impress upon the adcom that there's no one else who want to get in more than me. I consider myself from st. louis and I moved back after college even though my parents no longer live here. I'm REALLY attached to the school, (which is probably not a healthy thing to do) and want to let them know I am willing to eat a poop hot dog to get in. :laugh: I'm certainly not the usual profile of a washU applicant, but I've gotten this far!! (though maybe hundreds of others have also come this far) I have a good feeling about this year's incoming class, I hope you will all be part of it! Here's to the class of 2010!
 
oh, and I've been trying to find out how many are on the waitlist. I had an inside source (ex-adcom member) who was going to find out for me, but he hasn't replied yet. I'll let you all know as soon as I find out.

Yeah, I tried calling the other day. I asked about the existance of a priority waitlist, and the woman totally dodged the question, if not just kinda-denied the existance of one.
 
I was told several hundred people are on the waitlist
 
hot off the presses...the number of people who have been admitted to washU currently stands at 236, with the most number of acceptees from WashU (20), Harvard(18), Stanford (14), and Duke (12).

That is a lot!! someone mentioned earlier on this thread that they initially overfill the class, 236 is certainly overfilling it! Let's just hope that enough people take their acceptances elsewhere.

no news on the waitlist number yet.
 
Do you know if they are going to accept more people up until April 15th? Or is that all their acceptances before going to the waitlist?

I think that's it(straight from the admissions office as of today), while they wait for people to withdraw, and then they will go to the waitlist. Why do you ask? Have you not been waitlisted?

That's right in line with the target number Dodson said at my interview day. He said they are shooting for 230 in the initial class. He also said that they have never not used the waitlist in his time there, despite overfilling the class by so much.

I am currently on the waitlist. Just wanted to make sure no more people will be accepted over the 236 that you mentioned!

Also, isnt the class size about 120? I thought most schools accept twice the number they want their class to be.
 
usually around 120, with 20 or so MSTPs, Last year's class had an unusually large proportion of MSTPs, and i heard that Dodson got a lot of flak for it.

WashU typically has a lot more trouble with a high matriculation rate. That's why they try so hard to woo the students. The accepted students have a great 2nd look weekend to come!

Dodson says in the waitlist letter that he expects to accept 50 more students. That's an understatement, I'm sure, just so he doesn't get too many people's hopes up. i think Washu generally has to offer acceptances to 300+ people, and that's a lot more than 50 over the 236.

Another statistic, that's probably trivial, but there are about 80-90 students who are planning to come to 2nd look.
 
No info on how gigantic the waitlist is, if there are two kinds of waitlists, and if there were any post-interview rejections?

nope. but that's because i'm in mexico. On tuesday, I will be back in st. louis and I will march in there and demand answers!

Boo...I just came back from vacation to a waitlist letter from Wash U. (The 'thriver' one...if that matters.) It was printed 3/17 and postmarked 3/20 and probably got out to California 3/23 or so.

If only they'd let us go to 2nd Look Weekend. I think that everyone in this forum (once we find out that we're ALL off the waitlist!!!!) should organize our own mini 2nd Look Weekend, even if it's during the summer when classes aren't in session.

On a side note...I noticed that a few of you have UMich Medical School Class of 2010 in your signatures. Are you going to UMich's 2nd Look April 21st? I booked my ticket a few days ago.

oh boo. the ice cream social is at 3. I can't make it. Plus it seems to be at the Admissions office, so it might be a little obvious. Wouldn't want to run into Dean Dodson as I'm sneaking in to 2nd look.

it looks like WashU's up to its suave ways once again. No staying at Olin, all the students are being housed at the Parkway Hotel, and then Friday night they are picked up for dinner and the theatre. (what's playing at the Fox anyway?)

yah know, WashU could save itself a pretty penny by accepting me. They don't have to woo me at all! I know and love st. louis!
 
hey y'all, i'm assuming we all got a confirmation email from dodson today about getting our waitlist response? it wasn't personalized or anything...wash u is once again looking like such a great choice! i'm so easily wooed!

i just emailed back kissing a$$ and asking about financial aid for waitlisters - is there any chance of getting an estimate ahead of time, or do they usually just compute it if and when you get accepted? he probably won't write back to my asinine comments, so i thought i'd ask you guys!

also, can anyone comment on the student body at wash u? the few students i met at my interview seemed kinda immature but still nice...just trying to get a feel for all aspects of the school!

oh, and when do they start school anyway?!

i think the confirmation email gets sent out whenever they receive the reply form. I dropped mine off the next day after I got it, so I got my confirmation on the 23rd. It's just the one that says

"This is to let you know that we received your response indicating that you want to remain under active consideration for a position in the 2006 First Year Class of Washington University School of Medicine." ...etc etc. right?


I can comment on the student body, but I'm biased. The 2nd year class is AWESOME. The first year class is...eh, so so. I've said this before, that WashU tends to phase in and out of accepting awesome people, so it's really unpredictable, which is why 2nd look is so important for a lot of applicants.

School starts mid august, I'm not sure if orientation week is the week of the 14 or the 21st. One of those.
 
Dorm mail here runs incredibly slow, and I just got the waitlist letter a couple days ago and sent it off today... Do you think I missed the deadline for sending it back since y'all already got confirmation emails?
 
I'm withdrawing from the Thrivers waitlist, so hopefully that's move someone up on the list.
