I have heard from lots of people that doing wax ups can be a bit challenging. I have some free time now and want to start messing with that stuff while I have the time. Unfortunately my undergrad school does not offer a wax up course. I have been looking on the internet for a kit I could order or something like that. I found a really nice one that came with a couple tools some wax and some sample teeth ect. however this kit is no longer for sell. Any one have an idea where I could find a similar kit or something to help prepare me for doing wax ups????

Someone's confident... 😉.

I am also interested in an answer. It would be something to mess around with over christmas break... once I know I'm accepted. 🙂

That one through dmd students is what i found too and i think it would be perfect but like you said it is has been "temporarily unavailable" for about 6 months now.

A couple of years ago, I shadowed a dentist who used to teach wax-up at Nova; he basically trained me in waxing, so I have everything you're supposed to use (I ordered from Henry Schein (a big dental supply company). Maybe having the exact names will help you all find them online:

-PK Thomas Waxing Instruments, #1, #2, #3, and #4 (there is also #5, but I didn't bother getting it)
-Buffalo Alcohol Torch (and extra Wicks)
-Casting Wax, any color

From what I remember, each instrument should cost about $15-25 dollars.

I called some dental labs and they let me come in and practice waxing, pouring molds, and painting porcelain... After they showed me how to do it of course. Just an option if you have the time

If you have any extra time - enjoy yourself -- read a book, travel, paint, watch movies. But, don't waste your time prepping for D-school anymore than you already have by taking pre-reqs and studying for the DAT.

I promise you that you will have plenty of time to practice and learn your skills once you get to school. You will do hours of waxing before you know it. Don't throw away valuable chill time and money on stuff you will most likely have to both learn and pay for again!

I will look into this. Did you have to pay or anything?

No, I didn't have to pay anything.. First, find a larger dental laboratory because the smaller ones don't have as much free time to take on volunteers or pre-dental students. I called around and one laboratory agreed to let me come in and learn all the processes in the laboratory. I spent a couple days each at cast & dye, waxing, porcelain, and furnishing. After watching what was done at each station they let me do it myself. Of course they never actually used anything I did, but it was great experience and I learned a lot. I spent a week alone (4 hours a day) at the waxing station because they gave me my own station with all the equipment and multiple molds to wax. As long as you stay out of their way, its not a problem. My last couple days they gave me my own handpiece and let me attempt to furnish some crowns and bridges (ones they weren't using).

The president of the company told me that he has a lot of pre-dental students come through to observe and 'play' around. So it's not as uncommon as I thought.

Had a lot of fun though

all you need right there! if you can get a hold of some old casts (say from a lab or dentist) then you're money.

check ebay as i know i have seen some kits that have all these tools and then some for $30-40 (only the pkt's and some other tools like discoid-cleoids, etc)

Trust me guys, you're going to be sick of waxing teeth up by the time you finish waxing lab in dental school. I'm a D1 and I've waxed up 12 teeth in the first 8 weeks of school. You'll get plenty of practice during school and you should not be practicing waxing before you get to dental school because your time can be better spent enjoying your pre-dental school days. Trust me.
