Wayne State BMS 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just received my acceptance email today.

Last week they told me they were going to review ~35 applications this week, and the next batch at the end of the month.

Anybody know what the MCAT score requirement is?

A little old but...

Among recently (2005-2006 and 2006-2007) accepted BMS applicants, the average (normalized for the number accepted) was about 3.30 for GPA and 27 (about the 60th percentile) for cumulative MCAT score. In this time about two of three applicants were accepted by BMS and admitted by WSU Graduate School.

THanks! That's from that brochure right? I saw that too.

Yep 🙂 I actually got accepted with a pretty low quantitative GRE score, (took without studying....) so I'm sure they look at the whole package.

Wowzers! Thats encouraging. I still want to get the best score I can before I apply in october..

But I can stil retake it later on.

When do you plan on taking the MCAT?

Yeah I honestly wouldn't take the MCAT till you are ready, its better to take it once and get a great score than to take it and do worse than you want just to get into some program other than medical school. I'm scheduled to take the MCAT at the end of August and am currently studying for it.

You can easily take the GRE and get the results in 10-15 days.

Good luck!! 🙂

Yknow I never thought of that. I was thinking of powering the MCAT out now or at least getting a decent score. But taking it alot would hurt me hmmm..

thanks for the tip this got me thinking!

This will be my second or third time taking it(GRE). I took it for grad school a while back too bad my scores are expired(I think :?)

I kow they have a date of october 1st but I wonder if they will take my app anyway? I wonder if it's too late to apply for the fall:scared:

O wait I took it in 09...

I haven't heard back yet, and it's making me nervous. I tried calling Brenda on Tuesday of last week and her secretary said she would be out until Today. I called today and she'll be out until Thursday. Is anyone else anxiously waiting any kind of response from WSU BMS program?

Dont be nervous!!:scared: I am told that they accept people in waves. Sounds like they just got done with the first one. I am sure you will get in! 👍

HI Kelshie,
What was your GPA out of undergrad?

I got accepted for the BMS at Wayne...most likely going to end up there in the Fall

Is there a facebook group at all? I feel like there are a lot of students who are in the same boat, yet I don't know of a way to connect other than this website.

Can anyone tell when classes start for the BMS program? The calendar isn't on the website.

if you register for classes it will show you it starts august 29th, I have been told to get biochem and physiology for the first semester if I have to work, so both of them classes start on 08/29th. But I got to ask you guys when is the orientation and how do I know about it? I mean do we register somewhere or do we recieve an email about it? Good luck everyone!!!

Wait, I want to take biochem and physiology also. But in the email letter from Brenda it says not to register until orientation on August 23rd (make sure you RSVP to it). Are you waiting to register till then?

edit- call the BMS program to RSVP

Also I met with an admissions advisor at MSU's med school today to ask them about how they view this program. They said they accept a lot of students from this program and if you take at least 16 graduate credits they will consider that your new science GPA if its better than your old one 🙂

No, I went ahead and register, basically you select the classes you want to take from the schedule tab, and they will show in wish list, then underneath it, there will be the section of username and password to register, and I am sure I have registered because now I see the bill :S not fun lol, however I got to say a lot of people have advised me to take only two classes for the first semester but them classes are spread like oil in cabbage and you end up with a lot of time in between, so I am asking everyone, what will the difficilty level be if I were to register for three classes total?
I want to be done as soon as possible to get into med school next year,... hopefully.

Kelshie,

I'm still waiting to hear back from the program but want to go to MSU COM. Which med school are you referring to?? That's amazing news!

I spoke with the school of human medicine (MD). If you are more interested in the DO school I would call admissions and see if you could make an advising appointment and talk to them about it, its really helpful!

I need to start getting advising myself...

I have one at Wayne State's med school today, I'll post what I find out about their opinion of the BMS program.

Are their appointments always full and busy? IR is it easy to schedule?

I made my advising appointment with Wayne like 2-3 weeks ago, so it didn't take that long to get in. call admissions to make an appointment.

Basically what I learned: 20 credits of BMS work and Wayne will consider it your new GPA. Also, they expect us to get A's in our BMS program, B's do not cut it at the graduate level. So we must get a 3.7 and up to get accepted into the medical school. I know I'm aiming for a 4.0

Our courses are taught by the same faculty that teaches the medical school, which wayne state likes. I was recommended to make sure one of my letters of rec is from an undergrad professor, and another from a BMS professor.

Their average MCAT is a 30, and they only look at the most recent one. (i.e., if you get a 28, then a 25, they'll only care about the 25).

So if we get clinical experience, at least a 30 on the MCAT (although 28 or 29 is still acceptable) and above a 3.7 in our BMS work for 20 credits, we'll be good to go.

After today I was more impressed with Wayne than MSU... and I'm excited for fall!

I have been accepted. For those who are in the program any advice on classes, financial aid info., or # of credit hrs to take. Just trying to prepare myself before this gets rolling, any insight would be great. I Look forward to meeting everyone at orientation.

Hey everyone I am always attending the BMS in the fall, I also was under the impression that we were not supposed to register until orientation on the 23rd, that is what Brenda told me on the phone and in the email confirming orientation so hopefully I am not making a mistake by waiting. Also, is anybody looking to find a roomate to get a place? I found a solid two bedroom that I am going to take and would prefer to live with someone in the program so let me know. Look forwarding to seeing you guys in a few weeks!

Peter

Also does anyone know if a facebook group exists for our class or does anyone know how to make one? We should do this so we can post study guides, questions, etc.

I spoke to the program director and he strongly suggested against taking three courses in the fall. You know yourself, so it's ultimately your decision. I personally decided not to risk it but am still deciding which two classes to take.

Hey all,

So I'm tired of checking SDN for posts about Wayne's BMS program so I created a Facebook group for it. Thought it might be an easier way to communicate with everyone.

Check it out: http://www.facebook.com/groups/397710946944077/
(or just type in facebook Wayne State BMS 2012 if that link isn't working).

Hope to talk to you guys there,

Mike

Can anyone explain the GPA requirement for the program? I am above both university (2.75) and departmental GPA (3.0) minimums and was given the explanation that I did not meet either?? I noticed it said "in upper division coursework" which I presume is 300 and 400 level courses which I also meet above the requirement. I'm very confused...

Your overall Gpa has to be a 3.0 for the program...So your university GPA might make you ineligible..

It does say something about Qualified Admission in the description, it definitely wouldn't hurt to apply. MCS0503 were you accepted into the program?

I have not but I will by october. I just sent out a request for a reference letter yesterday. My cpu is broken so Im kinda behind.:scared:

I asked Brenda about that qualified admission and straight up gave her my GPAs she said people are accepted all the time with that. Just give it a shot. It's a program that's made to build you up.

Thats good to know, that should give other people hope who read the qualifications! Hopefully we will both be Warriors soon, I'm still waiting on a decision.

Hey everyone, I just finished my first year in the Wayne State BMS program and I can answer any questions you may have about it. I will check this thread over the next few days, so ask away!

Hi! Thanks so much! How was it?

Also what classes do you have to take that have "BMS" next to them. It seems like they are optional or not?

Hi! Thanks so much! How was it?

I have had a great experience so far. Some quick thoughts that come to mind:

- The classes are not easy, but it is definitely possible to get A's in all of them

- There are many professors in each course. For example, we had about 13 teachers in Pharmacology. They all teach the same subject matter to the medical students (but the med lectures are more detailed)

- All of the professors are very good, especially in Physiology but it's true for the other classes as well. Out of the many teachers I had during the first year, I only have major complaints about 1 of them. They are also very approachable and helpful.

- The small negative that comes to mind is that the front office staff is very slow. If they tell you something will be done in 2 days, it will probably take 2 weeks. But it hasn't affected my experience in the program.

The only class you will take with BMS next to it is BMS 6550, which is the Spring course called Medical Anatomy. Most students will take 8 credits in Fall, 8 in Winter, and that 4 credit course in the Spring, which gets them to their 20 credits (which you need in order to apply to Wayne with your graduate transcript). [Edit- the other option is 8 credits in Fall and 12 in Winter, then you don't even have to take the Spring term course but your Winter semester is tougher]

The other BMS-labeled courses that I see in my course guide are BMS 6010 and BMS 6100. I don't even know what they are and I don't see them offered this fall. Some of the other "labels" you will use are:

PSL- Physiology
PHC- Pharmacology
CB- Cancer biology
MBG- Molecular bio and genetics
BMB- Biochemistry and molecular bio
IM- Immunology

What time of the day is anatomy offered? I am planning on doing this and working at wayne state.

Wait are you saying that anatomy is requried or is it something they do to get to 20 credits? I thought the writing class was requried.

When did they allow to sign up, is it the day of orientation??

This past spring term, Anatomy was scheduled from 10-1p but usually got done around 12p.

It is not required, but many people take it to get to 20 credits. The requirements are to write the essay (about 20 pages), to take core courses in 4 different disciplines, and to get 34 credits.

Yes, we did not sign up for classes until after orientation. Don't worry, there is plenty of space in the classes and they won't fill up.

Ok I see. Also do they let people start the program in the winter semester? I am applying now.

Did you take three courses for any of the semesters? Or do you know people who do. Is it doable? Do you have any advice for the courses? Thanks for the help!

What winter classes do you reccommend?

I didn't take three, but I know people who did. I don't think they got all A's but that doesn't mean that it is impossible.

The go-to person for all questions regarding getting into medical school from the BMS program is a woman named Dawn who is amazingly insightful about the process. I met with her a few times each semester, and she strongly suggested not taking 3 courses in a semester. The reason being that you HAVE to get A's at this point, and it is a lot harder to do so while taking 12 instead of 8 credits.

I took 8 credits Fall, 8 credits Winter, and 4 credits Spring term. Once the spring class grade was posted, I sent in the AMCAS primary, which was around the end of July. It's a little bit later in the process than those who didn't have to do the Spring class, but I think my grades were better because I wasn't too burdened in Winter semester.

Do you have any advice for the courses? Thanks for the help!

I will briefly touch on the classes that I took:

Fall term:

Physiology I - Somewhat tough but not horrible. Do well on the first exam because the second one (neuro) is very difficult

Biochemistry- Easiest class to get an A in because you only need 80%. You HAVE to get an A in this class.

Winter term:

Physiology II - I think this was a little easier than Physio I. Those of you who want to start in the Winter term will take this first because you don't need Physio I as a prereq.

Pharmacology- My favorite class in terms of subject matter, but the toughest to get an A in. Only 4 people out of 50ish got a solid A in the class.

Spring term:

Medical Anatomy- Not too bad. All memorization, as you would expect from an anatomy course. Very detailed but the professors are very good and very helpful.

Classes that I haven't taken but heard a lot about:

Endocrine- Supposedly incredibly easy
Molecular bio and genetics- Heard it was really hard and to stay away from it if possible

That's all I can think of right now!
