yeah they did extend the interview date until mid april (i have one on the 17th). as far as the waitlist goes you just have to be optomistic and hope that it works out in the end. from what i have heard, historically, wayne moves many students from their waitlist into their class. here is a link to the wayne admissions statistics page for you

Because you asked, my MCAT breakdown: VR 10, PS 9, BS 10
The interview consisted of going over the strengths and weaknesses of my application so the interviewer would be better able to present my application to the admissions committee. From my interviewer, I got the impression they are looking for folks with a good deal of clinical exposure. We discussed my year of work in a hospital as a computer systems analyst and then another year as a communications project manager. Also my 4 years of volunteering at a free clinic in a medically under served community. Not discussed in detail, but I have healthy dose of typical premed clinical stuff... nationally registered EMT, physician shadowing, etc. I'm well rounded with many non-clinical activities too but they didn't come up much in the interview. I am lacking in research but it's probably balanced by my engineering background and didn't come up in the interview. Biggest "red flag" according to interviewer was "barely competitive MCAT score."

I acknowledged my "non-competitive" score, truthfully yet briefly spoke to why I thought I scored as I did, and countered with my obvious ability to succeed academically as seen in my upward GPA trend, tutoring and teaching experiences, and letters of recommendation from professors of my classes. My interviewer agreed and said she would direct the committee to these strong points and away from my MCAT score "red flag."

I answered truthfully...

The conversation went something like this...

Interviewer: Your application looks good but I'm wondering why you got that 9 in VR. Seems low for someone who can articulate well in person, in her essays and certainly for someone who took quite a number of humanities classes.

Me: That summer, I was juggling too many things at once and frankly, I made a poor decision. I was conducting research and had to present a poster presentation a week before the MCAT test. Since I had not prepared that well and it was too late to get any money back, I decided to sit the test and was planning to void it at the end. Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to see how I fared instead. It's a poor decision on my part because I chose to write the test under these conditions, didn't fare as well as I could have, and yet I didn't write it again. However, I aced all of my humanities classes in my competitive undergraduate program. I think the ad com will be understanding enough to see that my A's in higher level literature courses are reflective of my true verbal reasoning ability.

Interviewer: Yes, I think the ad com will be understanding actually and it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

(Me: YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

It's not an earth-shattering answer, as you can tell. But it's honest. I kept repeating how I should have set my priorities straight that summer but ended up compromising on my mcat studying. He did specifically ask, "Why did you not write it again? I know you would have had to pay for the test again but it would be worth it, if I were a student thinking about applying to med school." And that's when I said I knew I was going to demonstrate my verbal reasoning skills extensively in my academic work and so I wasn't worried about that.

Hey Kirby, I agree with what the others said. I received an 8 on my VR but was accepted into Wayne last month. When my interviewer brought up my MCAT scores, I just emphasized my success in humanities courses, WS score and whatnot. She seemed content with the response.

Just make sure you are prepared if they ask about your MCAT score and you should be okay. Good luck!

Anyhow, everyone seems to be saying that you can major in whatever you want. Well, I'm not sure if that applies to all schools. I've been told by someone who served on the admissions committee at Wayne State that they laugh at non-science majors such as English, Psych and Soc when brought to the table. They want science majors that indicate how the students will do in med.school.

Hamtramck is actually the only suburb that I'm aware for that has been completely surrounded by the city it's a 'burb of (N of I94 and E of M10).
Not sure how it's doing at the moment but it was very rough for a while (state took over it's PD and was considering taking over the FD - which was broke and unable to pay its smoke eaters, multiple fires every day, etc). Historically a Polish area of metro D, still has some of the traditional Polish ethnic resources.

Anyhow, everyone seems to be saying that you can major in whatever you want. Well, I'm not sure if that applies to all schools. Hadn't heard of them laughing at non science majors. And I can think of a few of them in my class (adcom members and non science majors).
And I would have to disagree that performance in undergrad (even science classes) has a direct correlation with med school performance.

I was wondering if someone else experienced the same login error or if it is just me.

I got in to Wayne OOS and I was a Comparative Literature major. And i didn't do that well in undergrad, tho it was Ivy so that may have helped. Anyways, if you major in something you love, do it well, and also happen to rock your pre-req's and/or MCATs, I think that's generally appreciated by ad coms. But majoring in science is a great way to jumpstart your MCAT prep, make connections, know what interests you, etc.

i moved out of state recently for a temporary summer job and I haven't had a chance to send in verification forms and tax forms. I know the FAFSA deadline was 3/1 and the online scholarship is 4/30. My question is...I cant access my parent's tax forms for a few weeks, is the delay in sending in those things going to hurt me in terms of getting financial aid/scholarship? I didn't know if it was a first come first serve basis...I don't think it could be since many people have still yet to hear at the end of April for acceptances ..and i wouldn't think its fair to lessen someone's chances on schoolarship just because they interviewed later....

I emailed the financial aid office about the verification forms 'cause my parents haven't finished their taxes. They said it shouldn't be a problem to wait until they're done. I'll just send everything in as soon as they finish the 1040. I'm going to that financial aid workshop also.. maybe they'll tell us something then.

I don't recommend living in Windsor unless you plan to leave for school 45 minutes early every day. The border can be pretty unpredictable.

The tunnel is single lane for each direction, so Nexus card users will have to wait like everyone else. The Ambassador Bridge has multiple lanes, but there is a lot of commercial traffic and you end up south of downtown.

P.S. I don't live in Windsor. I'm living in an apartment in midtown Detroit. The rent is cheap ($450/month for a studio) and it is close to school (10 minute walk). Things are pretty safe in the neighborhood.

If you live in Detroit it isn't necessary to own a vehicle. Most of the amenities are within walking distance. There is CVS, Radioshack, Pizza places, etc close by. When I go across the border during my winter/spring/summer breaks, I usually take a taxi (about $10) to the Greyhound bus station (about $80 return trip to Toronto).

That being said, the public transit system in Detroit sucks.

I know a few WSU students that have dogs. The ones I can think of off the top of my head lived in the Grosse Pointes, Ferndale, and Royal Oak.

I think I heard of some that live in the D - usually near the riverfront.

I'm bringing my dog. Not from the area but from what I hear (and what oldjeeps said) I'm definitely looking at the burbs like royal oak, ferndale, or the gross pointe areas just so I can be closer to dog parks. I may be totally wrong but I've been told that royal oak is a dogfriendly town.
