Was the "drugs of abuse" lecture only 2 hours? I was watching the video and he said we will talk about alcohol when we get back, then all the sudden it went onto cocaine...... just wondered if I was missing something

sounds like the tape skipped the middle hour.

No it was 3 hours. 3 wasteful hours. McCauley wrote the questions, so it's probably a waste of time to be watching the lecture.

Mac wrote the questions for that lecture? I thought that I remembered the lecturer saying that he wrote the questions but submitted a bunch of them a while ago and didn't remember what he asked and didn't know which questions had been selected to be included on the exam.

Gahh it won't go faster than 1.4x speed... what's up with McCauley, I don't remember him? Does he only test the notes or are his questions out of nowhere? (Hope not the latter, since his questions are half the exam...)

McCauley really stresses adverse effects and drug interactions. If you just know those and maybe have a general idea of mechanisms you'll do well on his q's. Mac was the guy who did the drug interactions with Yamazaki and he filled in for Dr. Tisdale on the local anesthetics lecture. I actually like him and think he's a great prof. I usually ace his pharm questions...

The guy did say that at some point. But later Mac came in and talked to him, and he made the announcement that he couldn't tell us what his questions were because McCauley re-wrote them.

Then McCauley said later that he really didn't think we would have time to read that packet, so know the practice questions, which he repeated in his email.

can anyone tell me how helpful the case studies for genetics are? are they on the exam?

I seem to remember that they were very helpful.

I knew that I loved drugs, but man, this exam just proved to me that I am in the wrong profession

Can't help but enjoy it when it looked like the average time to take that exam was under 20 minutes.

Now if only the PD exam will be just as gentle.

Soooo sick of studying. Blah!!!

Just rewatched the PD exam review lecture...

Is anyone else getting the feeling that this PD written exam could quite possibly be very brutal?

Hey does anyone have that outline for the OSCE thats being passed around?

I'm worried, but I'm too burned out to care. Officially gave up studying around 8ish. Though I can't say I accomplished much earlier today either.

Given that they could easily write the exam as a pathophys cumulative final, yup. But I think we're all too sick of exams to care.

...of classes composed entirely (or mostly so) of lecture--yes.
...of all lectures until we graduate--no. I've heard we go to a few lectures in the hospitals too.

Rumor has it that we'll have to deal with some lectures through all levels of our training. Have heard something about residents having to attend some required lectures (and sometimes having to give them to their fellow residents).

But generally most of third year and beyond is supposed to be OJT (on the job training).

No idea about that exam... could have killed it, could have failed. Definitely not studying for the boards yet.

yeah same here about clin med. I came out thinking that was either the worse or best exam ever

I am starting board studying next monday

how many weeks are you studying for? did wayne provide a study schedule?

fun8stuff said:

I'm studying for 4 weeks exactly. I don't think I can maintain concentration for any longer than that... and, frankly, I don't expect to actually keep focus for those 4 weeks.

yeah, wayne provides a schedule for us.
I am studying for 6 weeks, can't wait to start. I am thinking about starting with anatomy, can't wait!

haha, yeah i bet. what materials are you guys using? good luck and have fun :scared:

I'm studying for 6 weeks (with the schedule that one guy [Jason Mussman?] emailed us), using: First Aid, Kaplan Organ system (4 black books), and QBank. Also using Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple for mnemonics and silly pictures.

I did a few QBank questions just to see where I stood. Put the fear of god in me. Going to try and forget about it and enjoy this final weekend.

I am doing the same thing jon is. I think that is what the cool people are doing so I am just doing the same thing everyone else is doing, which is get all the first aid and BRS books possible and just study them all.

I don't get why people think the boards are the worse thing in the world. How can it be worse then studying for second year classes? I guess I'll just have to wait and see

anyone know what a good percentage is for a diagnostic step 1 exam? i just took one and averaged around 65-70% (w/o any studying, obviously)... not sure if that's good or terrible. where is this info?

Flobber, where can I take one?

I heard a 70% is pretty solid

www.nbme.org

you get 3 sets of 50 questions and its the real software that you use to take the exam. i think the questions are representative of the actual difficulty, since they are issued by the nbme...

Before I vanish from this forum for the next 5 weeks, I just thought I'd give a shout out to all my fellow second years, wishing everyone good luck with studying and on Step 1.

thanks, same to you

I think I am going to do the same thing, I just averaged a 54% and I feel kind of miserable.

I will be back a little bit after a month though

peace out and good luck with finals and the boards everyone

don't sweat too much. i have read some posts in the step1 forums about people who's first score was around 50% and they still did well.

I thought it was slightly harder then the first one. It could have been much worse.

Has anyone been studying for genetics yet?

Why the hell aren't our integrative scores posted yet? It's been a week! 😡

i'm just glad we're done with neuro. i didn't think it was that bad... harder than the first though, but i thought the first one was one of the easier exams of the year.

i will probably start genetics studying tomorrow... anybody going to tomorrow's case study and patient panel? the first case study was a such a waste! i felt like i could have literally learned the material in 5 mins that we spent 1.5 hrs on.

Well, I thought it was pretty hard compared to the first one, which was pretty easy, maybe it was the fact that I really didn't start studying until last week, hmmm. I've completely lost the will to learn - and on that note, I'll "study" genetics tonight in front of the TV while watching the Pistons, and I won't be attending tomorrow's activities - they will be, like the whole Genetics course, a waste of time. Worst class ever.

I got mine from the counseling office on Wednesday after the ClinMed exam, so no idea what their problem is with posting them up.

sounds like a good plan! i heard this genetics exam as kind of "clim med"ish... which can't be good. i hope there aren't too many subjective ethical questions. anybody have any suggestions for studying for genetics?

I don't know what tey would mean about "clin medish"... I mean, they had to set the pass rate at 56% last year because the average was in the 70s.... So I'm guessing it'll be a bit harder..... 🙄

i took it to mean that the questions can get kind of subjective... harder to answer.... maybe i took it the wrong way 😕 that sucks that the average was so low. this won't be a fun exam!

I remember that exam being pretty reasonable... the answers were all pretty much from the packet. The 1 picture was one of a kid who clearly had trisomy 21, no tricks there... good luck 1st years.

There you guys go again with the F-in packets! Whoever didn't share those with the rest of the class.... 😡 😡 😡 You first years are lucky that you're a more sharing/giving kinda class.

Haha, no I just meant the packet of notes that they gave us. I didn't have those other packets either.
