the class average was 81%, that's insane. Does anyone in our class have a life? I guess this was the wrong class to be in med school with. I'll do anything for a class with an average in the 60s, just once!
I wonder how next year's class is going to perform on this anatomy exam. If they get an average in the 60s, I am going to modify and be in their class.

I about fell out of my chair laughing. I can remember saying all of those things (except the DCM one - although it is a decent idea) at least once thru the year. Wasn't there a regular browser version available last year??? Or at least the rumor of one? I love the pre-populated idea. I mean the only eval's I actually put some effort into were the one or two really good/bad lecturer's. I also seem to remember some students completely refusing to fill them out and forewent getting their grades. I almost think that may be the way to go. If we could get every student, or upwards of 80-90 % to not fill out the next set of eval's we may have at least a platform to get heard from. This was a big issue last year and I am surprised that it hasn't been fixed with all the grumbling there was before.

I loved the clinical med idea. It will be pretty cool to have retinal scanners in scott hall. But to be honest I think clin med is a waste of my time, it shouldn't be required. I mean we are not in high school anymore, we should be allowed to watch those lectures later through blackboard on our time. And those 2 dorks who emailed the class on how unprofessional we were and unworthy to become doctors because a bunch of us skipped clin med last year, should mind their own business.
Doesn't it sound stupid to refuse to see a doctor because they ditched clin med lectures during their first and second year in med school. I mean all this class teaches us is what we already learned in undergrad. Be tolerant and non judgemental. And sometimes something about statistics.

I highly doubt that any of us remember what those scores were. But my OCD was acting up at this point last year and I tapped that info into my PDA (had to find some use for that waste of $).

Stats for the first round of exams for the Class for 2008 were: (% average +/- Stand. Dev.)
Gross Practical: 81.06 +/- 7.17
Gross written: 72.64 +/- 5.24
Histology: 82.08 +/- 6.91

If any has this recorded differently please feel free to correct me.

All it will take now to be sure the faculty and deans will pay attention to us is for us to unite in one voice that we will not take all of this lying down. I highly recommend that every second year send an email to Jackson about the post-exam reviews to show that we can unite even though not all of us take advantage of the reviews.

Honestly, I think things are going to get worse before they get better. Next week will be worse than this one with yet another exam hanging over our heads. If things don't start falling into place, it is going to get very ugly indeed.

I was in group A, and the number of questions was obnoxious. I fought the power by filling them out during required ClinMed lecture 😛 ... even blindly hitting 'neutral' for every question took forever.

I would like to think that our class is rising up in large enough numbers to make him do that, but I know someone that e-mailed him Thursday afternoon and got that auto-reply - saying that he was "out of the office on Friday". 🙄 Gee that's nice of the course director to not even be in the building the day of the post-exam review 🙄 .

I also e-mailed him this weekend to voice my displeasure with his decisions - I hope that a large portion of the rest of the class also does so.

2. Mandatory PDA purchase for year 3. We were promised all this PDA software/information to make life easier. All we received was this crap patient encounter software that was too cumbersome to use. Many of my classmates (and I) spent alot of money on the PDA's. The PDA's were good for nothing but doorstops since the majority of hospitals use Palm based PDA's.

I now use a Palm.

i emailed jackson after he informed us that half of us would have to complete BLS training 2 days before our exam. all i said was that it might be more fair if it was moved to after the exam. his response was, "...i'm sorry that you feel the BLS training is being forced upon you. you will have one day scheduled to study for the exam. one day should be more than sufficient to study." that's the last time i will ever email him. he could have just said it couldnt be moved... but what the heck?

I'm not clever enough to figure out how to list the members, but ... There's two listservs, the "CLS2008" and "Class of 2008". CLS2008 is for strictly academic matters - Kertia Black emails the whole class every time somebody uses it for something else, telling us to use the other one. Obviously faculty is on that one, but I figured they weren't on the other one (since they care which list you send your intramural sports announcements and whatnot to)

For anybody who isn't class of 08 -

The kid's not getting expelled for sharing lab answers - what he did was take an HTML-based (copyrighted) self-study, package it into a zip file, and send it out to the class. He did this purely to help people out (so they wouldn't have to drive to Scott Hall and do these on the MD lab computers), but probably should have sent it from an anonymous hotmail account.

Jackson's making an issue of the copyright violation, and the kid has to appear before the professionalism committee... one of their punishment options is dismissal. I hope he doesn't catch that - we are way too deep in now (in time and especially debt) to not finish school now, especially for a reason like this.

yeah, i kind of figured i blew it out of proportion. I wrote it before our first exam - so I didnt know exactly what the exams were like. So that is all it is.. CPR? It really sucks that our class has to deal with all this crap right now. Second year was supposed to be better than first year (not easier, but better because of the fact that we aren't supposed to be as stressed and the material's more interesting). Now it seems to me like our class has fallen into the pit of despair over many issues from the trivial (not enough bathrooms for the ladies) to the monumentally huge (tuition increases, construction problems, etc). We no longer seem like the fun-loving class clowns of last year, but have morphed into a class of whining, complaining downers. And we have a right to be! Everything our class has complained about can and should be fixed.

I really feel for everyone in our class and I wish there was more we could do to solve these problems and make everyone's lives easier. I honestly feel that the way our complaints are dealt with by student affairs and the faculty is just plain unacceptable. We are paying good money for this school and chose to come here over other schools. Taking that into account, we are customers paying for a service. If the service is ****ty, they should either fix it or give us our money back! I know that would never happen though.... 😡

I think you misunderstood me. I just meant that the faculty thinks that a dedicated 4 hour block is all we need extra. Besides I study every day...otherwise I wouldn't pass the exams, I could never fit everything into just one or two days before the test. I couldn't imagine just cramming for an exam, personally, I would go nuts.

And to add to the BLS description. It includes CPR and then how to do a basic assessment on heart rate and breathing, when not to move the patients (spinal injuries), and basics on how to staunch bleeding. My husband just had to complete BLS training (exactly what they called it too) at work and that is what they covered there.

we got an email today from jackson saying when we will have to do it. guess what day and time i got? 1pm-5pm on the day i didnt want. i guess this is what i get for saying anything at all. i suppose he is flexing his muscles for me 🙄

I was just wondering from your experiences if it's hard to get in? What are the requirements that really count? I also hear ya talking about Scott Hall, is that a different building than the one behind DRH? That's the only part of Wayne State I have seen. I guess any info would be helpful. Also, I plan to specialize in Psych and I don't find much info on hospitals in the are w/a psych floor. Any help there?

Yes Scott hall is right behind receiving. I think that if you are in-state then you have an advantage. As for requirements: the basics as far as courses go, I'm sure that more wouldn't hurt, but don't worry about not having 30 upper level courses. And Dean Norman (dean of admissions) said during the pre-med symposium earlier this year that you need to have a 9 on each section of the MCAT to be competitive. umm...about the psych someone else will have to chime in.

Basic Life Support Training will be provided according to MD lab assignments:

November 16, 2005 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. MD labs 2106, 2116, 2136

November 16, 2005 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. MD labs 2238, 2323, 2333

December 16, 2005 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. MD labs, 2125, 2135, 2228

December 16, 2005 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. MD labs 2248, 2258



Training will take place in the MD labs and Jaffar.



Remember that there will be a $10 registration fee to cover BLS course material. Checks only, made out to: Emergency Medicine, F.M.R.E.

Please go to the Emergency Medicine Academic Office, 6G UHC between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday to register for the course, pay the fee, and receive the book.



If you already have current BLS training then you will receive credit for the exercise. You must present your proof of certification to the Emergency Medicine Academic Office before your assigned training date to receive credit.

I had some issues with the last two exams, but I thought this one was fair. There were some silly gimme questions on it too ("which of these instruments needs to be sterilized", "when should you wash your hands")

Speaking of Clin Med, don't forget that the Community Health Assessment is due on Sept 14 ... the assignment says it takes an hour to complete (I haven't looked at it yet so not sure if that's the case)

You aren't complaining about the gimmes are you? After the first couple of exams I need every point that I can get and I am not fussy about how easy it is to get them.

From what I hear the ClinMed assignment that is due this week can take substantially more than one hour – don’t know since I haven’t done it yet.
