You aren't complaining about the gimmes are you? After the first couple of exams I need every point that I can get and I am not fussy about how easy it is to get them.

Not at all, they were just funny. I'd go from wracking my brain to picture what I'd written sideways in the margin of an index card, to "when are you supposed to wash your hands?"

I'll take any point I can get as well - when I say the exam was fair, I mean that if I do badly, I won't go blaming the questions. I (and a lot of other people I talked to) underestimated how much time and memorization it would take.

But that won't be a problem in the future - a new era dawns now. No more procrastination.

... I've been saying that since freshman year of high school.

Speaking of Clin Med, don't forget that the Community Health Assessment is due on Sept 14 ... the assignment says it takes an hour to complete (I haven't looked at it yet so not sure if that's the case)

I did the clin med assignment tonight and it took me about 2 1/2 hrs. Of course, I was doing it during MNF and a substantial chunk of that time was searching the internet for a decent "document" internet site/article for an intervention. And just to be clear, I put the absolute minimum effort into the assignment, meaning I just followed the directions and nothing else. As usual, the assignment is a complete waste of time, so any more than minimum effort just isn't worth it.

Happy B-Day (a little early)

and

Welcome to the club – sorry, but I bet 27 will feel even older surrounded by all of those youngins in the class of 2009. Weird how even one year seems to make such a difference – wonder what it will be like in the clinic when there are some residents that are younger than we are supervising our education.

Hell, I felt old last year. I've already had my midlife crises...

Been divorced
Got laid off from my first real "after college" job
Went back to undergrad
Got cancer
Got re-married
Started Med school...

*sigh* I think that qualifies me to be at least a decade older than my actual age.

I look at all of their happy faces as they float thru Fluffy-Bunny Land and wonder when life will take a baseball bat to them :meanie: . I wish I knew what day it is going to happen...I'd like to make some popcorn for the event!!!!

I don't even want to think about taking orders from some of them. If I try to repress it now, I may have more success in resisting slapping them one day. 🙄

I know it is my own fault for procrastinating...
But I am getting really annoyed by this stupid clin med assignment that’s due tomorrow. We are in med school now so why do we have to deal with this crap? I thought I left all these papers and essays behind when I left undergrad.

Why weren't ya'll at the Tigers game. Free beer. Good times.

I skipped Lerner's lecture today because he sucked so bad last time around... his notes are terrible!!!! What the hell does he expect us to get out of his jibberish-like randomness that he projectile vomitted onto 8 by 11 pieces of paper!!!

Sorry everyone... I'm just super pissed off today for some reason. 😡

And to make life more interesting the scores from Monday's exam went up today :scared: 🙁 . And as usual we posted a ridiculous average - don't remember exactly what it was but mid 80s is what is coming to mind.

Hope that everybody remembered to turn in their clin med assignment/paper/essay

For anyone who skipped today, the mean was 85% and median was 86%.

Beware Lerner's lecture since he has 3 hours to cover those 10 pages. That translates into 9 exam questions (over 10% of the entire exam). For those of you who missed the post-exam review last time, most of us missed the same 5 questions out of his six. God help us all!

what do you guys think of co-curriculars? are any of you doing it? does it look good to participate in it? i am thinking of doing HuMed....

Nope, seems like a huge headache to me. Plus, you get plenty of time off 4th year anyways.

I totally agree. Those Saturday conferences are soooo hard to wake up for. And I spent so much time freaking out and studying last year that I couldn't get the hours in. Once I decided to just forget about the whole co-cirricular thing it was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. Now, I volunteer mostly through one group (and I'm a co-coordinator, so that should look decent on my residency apps) and I try to get to Cass Clinic a few times a year.

Student: "Do residencies care about EC's"

Chief of Surgery: "Honestly, we're big bad surgeons, we don't give a **** about that."

haha.. typical surgeon.

Just heard from an MSU-COMer that people were shot outside of their med school on Sunday night. The people involved were not med students.

Hmm..... but I though MSU was the safe alternative to Wayne????

And just for pointing that out in a mocking sort of way, we will suffer a 23 casualty shooting inside of Scott Hall by the end of the week. Thanks a lot, that's all I need... to be shot.

As if I didn't have enough to worry about, what with the impending Clin Med exam.

well i was surprised during orientation when the head of wayne's police force told us that overall crime (incidences per capita/student) was lower at wayne than at msu or UM. but after being here a month, i really don't see what th ebig deal is. detroit rocks!

sarcasm. study it 1 day before the exam.

Katrina, you are a saint.

That is all.

what is your schedule like for 4th year? i'm sure it varies... but in general

I feel like a genious after the rankings came out

It varies tremendously. Basics: 3 required months + 5 or 6 electives.

I have no idea what my overall z-score is, so those rankings did nothing but freak me out...

Shangal said:

Must be nice. That rank list only did two things for me:
1. Made me depressed/really pissed at myself
2. Is supplying some motivation to study better so that I can attempt to redeem myself.
(I knew that I shouldn’t have gone looking for that letter with my overall Z-score 😡 )

Hopefully, some of you geniuses will help me out by getting a bit complacent for a while this year.

what are these rankings all about? i haven't been in for a while...

we got that letter last year with out z-score, is that what it is?

oldjeeps said:

Totally forgot about that letter.... found it! Now I gotta go look... I'm sure it'll depress me, but I'm like a bug drawn to the pretty light: "Oh **** it's a bug zapper!!!"

I actually thought the ranking wasn't that bad. I mean a 570 makes you top 20th percentile in the class. For some reason I thought you needed a 600 for that.
Hopefully this year won't be that bad either, although I am not doing as good as I wanted too.
I still wish we weren't ranked. At least during the first two years.

I agree about wishing not to be ranked. I think that the ranking system adds an additional level of stress that we honestly don't need at this level. Yes, it is a P/F/H system rather than a graded system, but the Z-score is basically a grading system with an A-Z breakdown rather than an A-F breakdown. I'd prefer a P/F system and let the board exams sort it out. It would certainly foster a more cooperative class rather than a competitive one.

How about this clin med exam?

Sick of studying, and we have 3 exams this week, including lab.

Anyone know how the lab exam is going to be?

No idea, but they told us in lab on Friday that we should all show up for the review on Tues. Supposedly half of the people who failed the lab exam last year were people who didn't go to the review.... cue the scary music...

I was talking to a third year today, and he said that the class average on the lab exam last year was like 1 ½ questions wrong. 😱
Sounds like it should be fairly straightforward. I was warned to be sure to review the pictures that go with the case studies (both from the Micro2 program and the text). Hope that helps the rest of you.

Don’t know about y’all but I am getting sick of reading Burack’s notes in preparation for the wonderful questions 🙄 that he will have put on the exam.

🙄 sounds like you need to spend more time on Burack's stats notes. 🙄

What if you can't find that letter from last year with your overall z-score? I think I lost it in our move this summer...
Good luck everyone this week!!!

i really enjoy how we had one lecture to explain our grading system in the guise of actual stats. only lecture of the "wicked" clinician that i liked.

Let me be the first to say THAT EXAM SUCKED ASS!!!!!

What the hell???

Most of Burak's questions were terrible and the rest of them were supposed to be easy! I'm super pissed off... 😡

hey, I wanted to say it first. I guess second isn't that bad
Clin Med sucks! I thought for a second I was in law school in that exam.

oh my god, burack really had it in for us.

the query search functions???

well at least i wasn't the only one

two more exams till weekend of alcoholism begins!

Aw, quit complaining. I thought everyone learned after Lerner that we are supposed to be able to read our instructors' minds.

Seriously, the wording of that exam was horrendous. Question 2: all of the following are false, except... Many of the answer choices took me a minute or two to decipher just what the he** they were supposed to be saying.

I’ll agree with that. I was wondering what it would take to get all of the folks hobbling around on crutches to beat Burack with them. After some of those questions he certainly deserves it. Like asking questions based on last year’s CM material – even if it was strongly implied in the data presented, how the hell was I supposed to know what type of study some of those questions were based on?

Also, what was up with some of Flack’s questions? I couldn’t even understand what he was saying in some of the answer choices 😕 – even scarier, I think that was the answer choice that I went with because I didn’t like the four that I could understand 😱 .

There were a LOT of questions that should have been worded better. I didn't think Burack's questions were that bad, but the non-Burack questions were ridiculous.

I expect them to test us on things that will be useful in our careers (or at least on the boards), but -
"Which of the following recommendations did this random ass subcomittee NOT make: Safety, Efficacy, Efficiency, ..." - seriously, how is that remotely relevant?

It's all been said already, so I'll just throw in a 😡 a +pissed+ and a :barf:

Anyone know what number the "unknown" respiratory case study? From last friday....Thanks!!!!!

P.S. I am sooooooo glad that exam is over with!!!!

there were 3, I think it was the influenza virus, TB, and something else I can't remember. I have to go over them
man, I am looking at all those questions I got wrong today, clin med is not cool. It will be funny though if the average was somthing like 95%.
