Here's something really stupid about our education... I just had to GOOGLE Paget's disease because we were never taught it. That's pathetic.

well, i believe they added it last year (2005-06) to physiology and biochem. i am pretty sure we touched on it at least twice... not that this helps at all...

Hi- there are different Paget's disease.. of the breast, bone (we had it CT) or something.. I just remember becuase there was a question on the CT exam of Paget Disease.. that one guy with the cool Australian accent... he talked about Vit D or something..
anyways, I know there is 3 forms, one of the bone, breast, and something else... skin or lungs maybe?
I don't know anything about it, forgot all the details... that it increases bone formation.. possibly leads to osteosarcoma... am i hot or cold?
There is a lot of stuff on this boards exam, I felt WAYNE did not do a good job of teaching..
well, anyways..no time to complain.

Anyone else having problems with Q-bank? It will let me log on and the creat test screen pops up, but then it times out before creating my test. Stupid Kaplan....

It’s almost enough to convince me to e-mail Kaplan to let them know about the problem, but I am sure that they have probably already gotten thousands of such e-mails.

They'll probably just tack on a couple of extra days and say they fulfilled their part of the contract, fully knowing that it's a worthless gesture (since we all have set Step I appointments).

If Scott Hall isn't still blacked out (who knows at this point), you can probably get an increase in your loan to hold you over until the next disbursement in August. Might as well live comfortably and without money worries leading up to a test like this.

enzymes cleaving phosphodiester bonds, such as those in cAMP or between nucleotides in nucleic acids, liberating smaller poly- or oligonucleotide units, or mononucleotides but not inorganic phosphate.

Not sure if that helps much, but then again I always did hate biochem – partly because I’m not very good at it.

Maybe this will help. The enzyme cleaves the cAMP or cGMP intracellular signals into AMP or GMP, shutting off 2nd messenger signals for cell activity. Two easy drug examples that come to mind are caffeine (prevents cAMP breakdown) and Viagra (prevents cGMP breakdown). Obviously these are different effects because of the different second messengers and the cells they act on, which is probably why no specific example came to mind for phosphodiesterase (a very general enzyme class in several cell types). Hope this helps.

Elevated cGMP ultimately leads to dephosphorylation of the myosin light chain, resulting in vascular smooth muscle relaxation" and lower blood pressure for a weak heart to pump against. p. 208

Looks like SDN ate my response from last night... my opinion is that both BRS anatomy and embryology are way way too detailed for boards. Both are "low yield" on boards, and I think First Aid + qbank are plenty good for these unless you're shooting for a super high score.

What are you guys using to study images?

The Robbins Path Question book is good for pics. I also have a big Robbins but I haven't pulled it out yet.

Any of you guys think its worth while challenging the clin med practical score? I just got mine and it was way lower than I think I should have gotten... I knew I was screwed when the SP observer was furiously flipping the pages back and forth and checking things off well after I had finished.

Ah well, I guess I'll wait for the hard copy to come in the mail so I can see what exactly they said I didn't do. My gut tells me that absolutely NOTHING productive will come to appealing to anyone at WSU, so I should probably just suck it up. Thank you, Clin Med, for this fun little interlude to my studying. Back to respiratory...

Flobber, I tried complaining last year about my participation grade and nothing came out of it. I think only two people in my group got the 100, everyone else got 80s, which isn't fair since we all participated. Plus I heard in some groups last year, everyone got 100s.

That 80 lowered my Z-score by more then 100 points. I hate clin med, its the most unfair class in the first two years of med school.

And did I read that thing right, does getting a 580 get you to honor clin med? how many people honored that class? Was it similar last year?

Have any of you heard of Taussig-Bing malformations? I know that I zoned out on occasion during embryo 😴 , but I don’t recall ever reading about that one – not even in my Kaplan review books.

Useful things hidden in First Aid:

Check out the opening page of the pharm section. It tells you which systems to focus on and to focus on the prototype drugs in each class.

There is also a rapid review section after the physio section that contains major buzzwords and most common causes of disease X that I am going to get to know ad nauseum before the big day.

And, yes, I can't stand the syndromes named after people either. A set of symptoms could be called "Bob's syndrome" for all I care, but that doesn't mean it helps to understand what is going on. I'll take obscure Latin names for diseases (hello, derm!) over these pretentious pathologists.

As long as we're on a "I hate this" spree, I may as well add in how much I hate the leukemias and lymphomas. And wouldn't you know it? That's 2/3 of the heme Q-bank questions!

What is Taussig - Bing?

Don’t remember exactly how q-bank described it, but from memory (with some help from my copy of Stedman’s):
That would be aorta coming off the right ventricle, with a left-sided pulmonary artery overriding the left ventricle and with a high ventricular septal defect. Right ventricular hypertrophy, anteriorly situated aorta and posteriorly situated pulmonary artery.

holland, it was funny because I went there with two people, and on our way back the girl I was with didn't know we were in the netherlands for the whole time. So we had to explain to her that amsterdam is the city and netherlands or holland are two names for the country.

It was a fun trip though, I went to the infamous red light district and got into a fight with a pimp over there because the girl I was with was taking pictures. I am not a big guy but I think I scared him a little bit.
