you might be right on the saturday thing and timing... i have a really faulty memory at this point (i blame rillema and lightbody for all changes in cognition over the past year).

I spoke with a very nice lady in admissions yesterday because my family has been bugging me about the white coat ceremony too. They haven't scheduled a venue yet, but it will be sometime between 11 am and 2 pm on Saturday, August 9th. Our white coats will be provided for us (dissapointing because my parents bought me a SWEET one!!). I also asked how many guests we are allowed to invite, and she said that will be based on the venue. Hope this helps!! I'm looking forward to meeting you all in a few weeks!!

They might be...that was the term she used.

Probably found that they had to upgrade as they probably ran into space issues trying to jam 300(+) students plus their family members into the three lectures halls. Might be interesting to see where they do it (might prove to be a nicer ceremony 🙄 then those of us that had it in Scott Hall had).

So I was on the SOM website, and I stumbled across this:

how imperative is it to have a pocket PC in 2nd year? from what I've heard - there's no way around it - is this so?
If yes - any advice on what to get?

When I was a second year - 2 years ago - the only thing that we needed it for was to check-in to required activities, not sure if that has changed. If it hasn't, the PDA is a waste of cash, especially if you have a laptop. Two ways around it.

1. Download a virtual machine for free from microsoft - it runs a PDA on your windows machine, it's meant for developers, but it worked for me. I don't remember the address, but it was easy to find.

2. Sign on to campusmobility on your laptop's browser. Then go to wsu.campusmobility.com/daily.php. This is the exact same screen that you would see on your PDA to check in.

You don't need the PDA in third year, at one time you needed it to log patients, you do not any longer.

Thanks so much!! Great advice! I am really trying to get around this one. In case of any changes which would require 2nd years to get a PDA - do you have any recommendations on what to get? I'm not sure whether you guys need them in 4th year.

I'm partial to the cell phone/pda combos (palm is good)- that way you aren't carrying around 2 things, and depending on your cell phone contract situation it may be cheaper to buy the cell phone version with a contract.

if you want a combo phone/pda... you might as well go for the iphone. at least in my opinion (it's what i'm planning on doing when the finaid comes through).

What's the daily schedule is like for the week for M1's starting with gross anatomy/histology? I gave a sad attempt at looking for it on the WSU SOM website but failed. Thanks!!!!

Timewise, like it starts at 8am but around what time are the lectures and labs done if you attend them?

I just looked everywhere there was an orientation link..and I cannot find a schedule anywhere! Where did you find that?

the calendars are actually in your owa.med.wayne account (aka mailbox/ shared folders). you won't be able to access them until you get to orientation. i had downloaded it into my ical earlier in order to plan stuff...

sorry. umm... but you might try this:
http://www.google.com/calendar/embe...roup.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/New_York

some one passed that on to me... don't know how accurate it will actually be.

That's a super awesome calendar, seems like it'd be accurate, at least gives me an idea we'll be doing a 9-5 thing. Thanks!!

Wow thanks! I thought I was going crazy not being able to find it. I really appreciate the calender. I am a little OCD about my schedule! 😉

Just got my class zscore in the mail today and feeling really average. How important are these things?

I suppose it might matter depending on what you want to go into (e.g. plastics). Many people I have talked to say that your class rank matters little and that Step 1 is really the thing departments look at... but as I haven't gone through the match yet, I can't comment from personal experience. (Also there is a correlation between rank and step 1 scores).

You probably feel right now like you are the only average person and that everyone around you has honored everything... (I felt the same way). Clearly this is not the case as approximately 15% of your class honored -- meaning 85% didn't. You are average... like most people in your class! And you are average amongst a group of very intelligent and diverse people. The way I look at it, if you are anywhere from 450 to 550, you are truly in the "clump" of average and you should be proud. Like most people in your clump, you studied hard but didn't sacrafice to the point of having family/friends hate you or getting divorced (if you are married). {yes I know that many people honor while maintaining relationships... relax people!} It's difficult to go from being the best in your undergrad (like we all were) and heading off to the fine-tooth combing of the medical school curriculum.

If I were you, I would put my chin up (I did 🙂, study hard for second year (as I'm sure you did this year!) and concentrate on prepping for step 1. I have to tell you that once you get to 3rd year, you will often be surprised by who shines on the floors and who doesn't. (While I was average, I have been told by most people I worked with that I stood out amongst the students) When you study for step 1 and for 3rd year, you will be amazed by how much you have really learned.

I still must argue that class rank in general has much less to do with intelligence/worth/whatever other adjective you want and much more to do with the hours and effort put into studying. But if you are still really bothered by your placement, all anyone can say is think about how much you studied... I'm sure you could squeeze in a bit more or change your style.

Good luck with 2nd year! :luck:

Dr. Levine says residency program directors can sort/filter their applicants by (for NRMP):

- LCME accreditation of med school
- US grad
- USMLE score
- AOA status
- research experience
- years since med school graduation

but can't sort by:
- sex
- race
- age
- class rank
- clerkship honors

Class rank (Wayne does quintiles) and clerkship honors would be included in the MSPE (dean's letter) however, so the info would still be part of your application. BUT, AOA status acts as a surrogate sort criterion for class rank, since class rank is fairly directly tied into AOA status (e.g. for junior AOA at Wayne, only the top 6% are selected, with class rank comprising 80% of the scoring weight). So it basically works out to most of the top quintile able to be filtered in/out (via AOA status as the surrogate), and the rest of the class (the 84% non-AOA) being on equal footing.

I was hoping to get some insight from those of you who have already taken the Step1. I am trying to figure out whether to go with Kaplan QBank or USMLEWorld and USMLERx. Did you end up using both or neither? If you did decide on one vs. the other - what were the selling points? Other resources you used besides FirstAid?

Thanks much!!

i used kaplan qbank and i guess liked it, seeing how i am happy with my score. just realize that they are harder/more detail oriented than the real thing and use them as a study aid rather than to test your knowledge. however, i have heard from many people (in real life and on the internet) that USMLE world is the best qbank. Supposedly the questions are closest to the real thing in terms of format, length, and depth. I heard about this after i had bought kaplan qbank and didnt want to switch $$$.... the best resources from what i remember are first aid, brs path, brs flash cards for pharm and micro... probably a few others that i have forgotten about.

I bought USMLE world and thought it was average. It's way overrated on this site if you ask me.

I was wondering if any of the canadian students could fill me in on this. I know that as canadians we dont get love from financial aid, but does that change with second year, cause I remember someone mentioning that to me on the phone fromt he financial aid office. As well are Canadian students eligible for any scholarships once we start school?

Neurosurgery - Love the brain and playing with drills.

Anyone know when we get 3rd year OSCE results?

How much exposure to neurosurgery do you get in 3rd year?

And with this new clinical system to be implemented in the coming year - which hospital would you choose for the 3rd year clerkships if you could only choose one - i.e. the hospital with best exposure to neurosurgery?

I only did a month as an elective. Doing surgery at Harper you don't get time to see any subspecialties, you're expected to be in the OR with your team. I did Neurology at Harper too - I got some Neurosurg exposure there to, because you do a week in the NeuroICU at DRH and the Neurosurgeons help manage those patients.

I think that the best place to get the most exposure might be St. John's. They get to do electives within surgery. I know one of the people applying to NSG with me did surgery there and got to rotate with neurosurgeons.

Now my soapbox time - Wayne screws those of us who want to do competitive specialties like neurosurgery - by limiting us to only 3 electives in any non-primary care field. Others can do many electives at other places to increase their chances of matching, we can't - I'm did a month to try NSG out, then a month of NSG research and a month at another place - that's all I get - wayne'd again.

Hope everything goes well with your application.

Yeah, I was kind of disappointed about this as well. I managed to snake a 4th elective in, but only because I did co-curricular and can use that month for the 4th elective.

Oh that's funny! I just saw you on the mailing list and thought all of us had our Sub-I's...

I thought rotations started on the first weekday of the month? I called their office to find out today, but it was closed. I'm going to call again on monday to see about the start time... Here's to hoping for monday August 4th!

That sounds most familiar. But then again the only constant at WSUSOM is change.

Boo. It's the first weekday. Starting friday... no 3 day weekend.

Add the google calendar to yours... Then go to the calendar settings. There is a button on the share setting that says "iCal". It will export it as a doc. Then you just open it/import it to iCal.

I'm a second year so this calendar (google calendar) doesn't apply to me. Is there a google calendar for 2nd years? Or do I have to manually enter the info. Thanks for your help.

BornStarlet,

Welcome to SDN.

I know nothing about your class's year 3 OSCE scores, but I know that I felt the same way a year ago.

hey fellow 4th years,
anyone else think the year 3 OSCE scores were a little ridiculous?

ridiculous in that to fail it you had to score 2 deviations below the mean or what? i am just glad that is over and that i don't have to redo any of it.

Agreed! I'm glad my "holy crap! did I really just walk out of the room forgetting to do half of the exam/ask questions x,y and z?" didn't result in me having to repeat... I actually did pretty well. But, whatev -- I'm done!

Sub-I is T minus 28 days from being over...
